Description

Starring one of Asia’s most popular actors, Kim Rae Won (What Planet Are You From?, My Little Bride), and from the screenwriter behind the award-winning epic TV series Jumong, The Grand Chef takes viewers into the heart of Korean cuisine and explores the undeniable bond between food, emotions, and memories.

Sung-chan’s (Kim Rae Won) father, the owner of Korea’s most prestigious restaurant, organizes a culinary competition to determine who will inherit his generations-old restaurant. As Sung-chan and his brother Bong-joo (Kwon Oh Joong, Damo) go head-to-head, foul play leads Sung-chan to bow out of the competition before the final event. Devastated, Sung-chan embarks on a journey across the country during which he discovers the true essence of Korean foods, flavors, and ingredients… and learns more about himself, his talents, and his royal heritage.

Based on a popular Korean comic, and starring the lovely Nam Sang Mi (Time Between Dog & Wolf, Sweet Spy) and Kim So Yeon (All About Eve), The Grand Chef is a delicious treat that will make your mouth water and your heart melt.

YA Entertainment To Release Korean TV Drama “Gourmet” on DVD
Korean Cuisine Takes Front Seat in 2008 Blockbuster K-Drama

San Bruno, CA, July 1, 2008 YA Entertainment, the exclusive licensee and distributor of popular Korean TV drama programming with English subtitles in North America, announces its upcoming release of the blockbuster K-drama title Gourmet on DVD with English subtitles this Holiday season.

Following in the footsteps of the most popular Korean TV drama of all time (based on worldwide sales), “Jewel in the Palace” (a.k.a. Dae Jang Geum), Gourmet‘s main storyline focuses on the artistic and colorful dishes of Korean cuisine. The TV drama stars some of the most popular actors in Korea: Kim Rae Won (What Planet Are You From?, My Little Bride, Rooftop Room Cat), Nam Sang Mi (Sweet Spy, Time Between Dog and Wolf), Kim So Yeon (All About Eve), and Kwon Oh Joong (Damo). The 24-episode TV mini-series first debuted in Korea on June 18, 2008, and is scheduled to run until October.

“We are thrilled and honored to bring Gourmet to North American audiences on DVD with English subtitles,” said Tom Larsen, President of YA Entertainment. “Gourmet has all the elements that Korean TV drama fans in the US enjoy: dramatic storyline, all-star cast, a focus on a Korean cultural aspect (like food), very high production values, and plenty of roller coaster-like emotions and cliffhangers.”

Gourmet will be released on DVD in two volumes (boxed sets). Each volume will include four discs, with Korean audio and English-language subtitles. YA Entertainment anticipates the DVD release date to be sometime in mid November 2008. YA Entertainment is also arranging for the nationwide cable TV broadcast of Gourmet in the United States.

Synopsis
Discover the beauty and complexity of Korean cuisine in Gourmet, the 2008 breakthrough drama featuring some of the biggest names in Korean entertainment.

Korean heartthrob Kim Rae Won (What Planet Are You From?, My Little Bride) stars as Sung-Chan, the warm-hearted chef-in-training who loves to cook. In his culinary education, he befriends Jin-Soo (Nam Sang-Mi, Sweet Spy) a headstrong country girl who dreams of becoming a food critic. Although Sung-Chan and Jin-soon don’t get along at first, the two quickly join forces in order to make both their dreams come true.

But life gets complicated for Sung-Chan when his step-father learns of his culinary talents and rethinks the inheritance of the family restaurant, creating a newfound sibling rivalry between him and his step-brother, Kwon Oh Joong (Damo). The two brothers begin an intense culinary battle to become top chef of the family business and to discover for once and for all, whose cuisine will reign supreme?!
