Cajun Dinner at Pier 17 on Garusugil

Tasting notes.

Drinks are sweet but very inventive. I got a blue margarita with sharks in it. The sharks were filled with strawberry daquiri. Good drinks and great if you are in a festive New Orleans mood.

I ordered the couples tasting menu (~30,000) We started with the Oysters Rockefeller. They were cute but needed more seasoning. The green bread crumbs that try battered it with didn’t make it amazing. The Po boy sandwich tasted great. I loved the spicy remolade and the veggies on the bread. I don’t know if it was homemade bread but it was very good. The star of all the dishes was the chicken gumbo. It was flavor rich with cajun spices, okra, dirty rice, chicken and sausage. It was thick gumbo i prefer, but the flavor was spot on with the right mix of cayenne, celery salt and garlic. The gumbo is proof that chef has some skills.

We also got a shrimp course and the shrimp came out plump and poppy and the breading was crisp.

There was one little problem. The oysters Rockefeller had a little piece of plastic in it. We brought it up to the staff and they quickly reified it. They offered to replace it or take it off the bill and they were very apologetic.

The atmosphere is great as well but the chair seating is a bit cramped and the chairs make a lot of noise.

Anyway, I would recommend this place if you are looking for some Cajun in Seoul.

Last night we finally got around to going to Trevia. It is just opposite our bus stop but until now we had not ventured inside. Whatever night of the week we pass it is always busy and now I finally understand why.

The cafe is decorated in an Italian style with pictures and Italian memorabilia all over the walls. They have big wooden tables and the ever so popular mismatched chairs. Is there a restaurant in Seoul that has a matching set?

As you enter the restaurant you will be given a menu and then you go and find your own seat. After ample perusing time you can go to to the counter to make your selection and pick up your water, cutlery and complimentary pickled vegetables. You will be given a buzzer that will ring when your pizza is ready. It’s a very good system and probably helps account for their lower prices.

We decided to get 4 slices instead of a whole pizza and this was almost too much for two people. You could easily share 3 slices between too as each slice is cut into another 4 pieces.

I opted for the mixed mushroom (5,500). I love mushrooms and this pizza was really good. It was topped with a good medley of mushrooms and cheese. The dough was thin, crispy, and chewy all at the same time, exactly how I like it!

Niall ordered a slice of the  Quattro Formaggi (5,500) four cheese. Presented in a very cute way each piece, came topped with a slice of cheese. Gouda, Gorganzola, Brie and Mozzarella were the choices.  He shoveled it down pretty quickly so you’re onto a winner with that one. Where else can you get that variety of cheese for that price?

We also ordered the Filone Potato (6,300) A  rosemary potato pizza which was was probably my favorite. You could taste the rosemary the second you bit into it, and the potatoes were perfectly cooked.

Our last slice was the Fresh mozzarella (6,300). This was great too. Topped with lettuce leaves drizzled in olive oil, cherry tomatoes and mozzarella.  It tasted so fresh and clean. The perfect slice for salad lovers.

In a fit of greed I also ordered a lasagne (13,000). Which was actually rather good, tasting just like it should. It had a good robust flavour and lots of lovely pasta. The way lasagne should be made. I love my own recipe but this one could satisfy any cravings you have. Much better than what you usually get served up in Korean style Italian restaurants. They also have a variety of salads, paninis and breads available.

The drinks are very cheap, a big draft beer cost a mere 3,000 and a glass of wine at 5,000. No wonder they are so busy. Its the perfect venue for a first date or casual meet between friends. Nice enough ambiance without being too formal. They even have their own Salami, Olives, Oil, balsamic vinegar and Parmesan cheese for sale!

Trevia is located at 557 Itaewon-Dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The nearest bus stop is 03-152 it’s just by the restaurant. By Subway head to Noksapyeong station (line 6) and come out exit 2. Review: Pizzaria D’Buzza

Pizzaria D’Buzza makes a dang good pie. Now I can’t say it is the best I have ever had, but they make a very satisfying pie. I think the crust could be a bit crispier. The toppings are good and so is the marinara sauce.

I also got the bitz (or something like that) which are little rice balls. The one we had ha cheese inside and topped with Parmesan cheese and truffle oil.

The balls were ok, nothing special. I did appreciate that had something unique on the menu though.

The atmosphere is quaint yet loud. They insist on pumping out loud techno music while you dine in a dimly lit romantic atmosphere.

Overall, the food is good and I would go again. However, I am still looking for my perfect pizza pie. This one is close though.

Two Hands Burger: Decent Burgers in Haebangchon

So I used to go to this place when it was called Le Vert which was known for their brunch. They have refocused themselves and now focus on burgers, but they do have other items on their menu. The new place is called, Two Hands Burger.

Yep, it place is aptly named because you do need two hands to eat these burgers. At first grab the burger juices, condiments and maybe egg yolk (or chili) ooze out as you take a bite. The patties are chargrilled, the buns are whole wheat and toasted, and the fillings piled just right. I recommend their mushroom burger that has plenty of mushrooms and cheese and their Le Vert Burger which has bacon, egg, cheese, veggies and burger. Their seasoned fries make a nice accompaniment (that and a beer).

The atmosphere is quaint and service is fine. They have a decent beer selection as well. This place has good comfort food at decent prices. If you are in the neighborhood, you should check it out.

Life has been good to me. Last week I received an invitation from Wayne Gold. Wayne is an Itaewon Dinosaur and has been here from 1998. He is one of the owners of the Wolfhound bar and several other businesses. His most recent venture is Reilly’s Taphouse & Restaurant. He is one of the owners there with several others including. One of the past Seoul Eats writers Troy Zitzelburger can often be seen tending bar and brewing beers there. I was invited along with some fellow bloggers: Joe McPherson of Zenkimchi, Zara and Elle of cute in Korea and Diane from Korea Tourism.

Our host, the affable and wily Wayne Gold, corralled us with stories about the history of Itaewon and got us a very nice selections of beers. They have over 20 beers on tap including local favorites such as Magpie Porter, Geumkang Dark Ale and even some of their own: Reilly’s Peninsula Dark Ale. They have beers that I haven’t even seen in Korea before such as Belgium Ales and Tripels. This place treats beers like wines and you can sip and enjoy beers from all over the world including Korea.

The food is quite good as well. It is a mix of hipster gastropub and greasy pub fare that will whet your appetite after drinking a few brews. On their menu they even suggest beer parings for the food. It is nice to know the brew pub is focusing on their entire concept and not just making food the afterthought.

The onion rings are thick and the paprika dipping sauce was excellent. I thought the rosemary in the batter was a bit of overkill but the beer batter made the rings quite crispy. They have an assortment of mussels for those looking for a bit of sophistication. They were good- nothing mind blowing but they were good.

The tenderloin over the the potatoes and baked apples showed that the chef had some skill. This was a hearty meal big enough to share and the bourbon cream sauce matched it well. Now I have been told by several people that the star entree on the menu is the Braised Lamb Shank with sweet potato. I will have to get that next time.

The Scotch eggs here was the best dishes we tried that night. They are big and the egg is slightly yolks with crisp pork and breading on the outside. Wow. The marinara sauce under it was rich and delicious as well. The marinara sauce was so good that next time I will have to get the meatballs.

The giant burger was great as well. It is a feast and not one for sharing because the thick beef patty is topped with onion rings and veggies and held together with a huge steak knife. Once you grab on to this burger you just have to finish it.

Overall, a great hangout spot and a place to get good food. Next time you are in Itaewon, be sure to check it out.
