Great Noodle Soup in Sinchon by Helloklara

Myeolchi Guk Su recently opened up in Sinchon, a noodle bar that really takes "fast meal" to a new level. The 24-hr restaurant literally named "Good Anchovy Noodle Soup House" specializes in---you guessed it---anchovy-broth soup. Good Anchovy Noodle Soup House You walk in through the sliding doors and to your left is a menu ticket-machine, where you enter in your order (you can choose between the main dishes: myeolchi guk su, naeng myun, or bibim naeng myun, and appetizers like hard boiled eggs and a myeolchi jumokbab, which is a rice ball with anchovies). If you think one bowl will be too small to kill your hunger (or you just want to share), there is a double-size option, which is what my friend and I ordered, along with two riceballs. The machine spit out three tickets and before I had a chance to hand it to the guy behind the counter, he had our giant steaming bowl of myeolchi soup ready on the bar. Our riceballs weren't far behind. Noodles i...

Korea Mania Chicken in Sinchon

Spring Onion Chicken at Korean Mania Chicken.  Fried Chicken and Beer is a magical combination that I think all people can agree with. The crisp, greasy chicken is washed down with the sparkling bitter slosh of brew. Now a stronger microbrew probably would be too strong for the crisp, light taste of Korean chicken, but the light Korean beers are a great pairing. A week ago, I went to Shinchon for a good-bye party for a couple of my friends. For the first round we went to Korean Mania Chicken. This is another chicken franchise located in Korea like BBQ, Kyochon, Hotsun, and TwoTwo. The thing about Korean Mania is that they are at a lower pricepoint than most of the other restaurants (You can get an order of chicken for 10,000) and I think they have very crisp chicken with a light batter. Friends A close up of the spring onion chicken with tangy sauce. We started out with the Spring Onion Chicken (파닭). This was boneless chicken- mainly skin- that is fried and served with green ...

Sinchon Sujebi...meh

Behind Hyundai Department Store near Sinchon Station Exit 1 is this little handmade dumpling soup place. It's been around forever and the grandmothers make the dough by hand everyday. I saw them making the sujebi outside on top of the red bins. The one one mixed it and kneaded it until it was ready and then she went inside and dropped it in the soup. It's got a very simple broth with bits of ground pork carrots and pumpkin. It was good, but...I think it was just sujebi. A reader of Seoul Eats told me this place was the best but I just thought it just was. Maybe I'm just not a sujebi person. The big thing for me was the broth. I didn't think it was very rich nor thick. Side Dish The good thing is that it is super cheap. 4,000 won for a humongous bowl is great, but I think for someone that is very hungry. I think it would taste better in winter.

Seoul Menu: Yaletown, a great place for burgers and poutine in Sinchon

Here's another addition to the Restaurant Menu Series. Yaletown has a great array of bar and comfort foods. Everything is made in house by Chef Jason. It's a great place to chillax with friends over a cold pint or a shot of Russian Vodka. Drinks Menu Russian Vodka for 35,000 a bottle! Wow! Cass is only 3,000 a pint. The Yaletown Nachos are phenomenal. The Mushroom Burger is great as well.   Nightly Specials. We've got wings on Monday, Tuesday is Mexican Night-get your bottle of tequila.

GO PENGUINS! Who's up for Hockey, Japanese Ramen, and Beer O'Clock

It is Wednesday, May 27th in Korea and tonight is Hockey night. Call me crazy if you will. Actually just call me Koreazy. I'm a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan and they are playing the Carolina Candy Canes tonight. If they win they could advance to the finals. It is inevitable that they will advance, but I feel that they will do it tonight. I will be at Beer O'Clock in Sinchon (the stop next to Hongdae). A map is below. I will be watching the game and running over to get Japanese Style Ramen at a cool little place near by during the break. The ramen place has many individualized booths where you can sit by yourself or with another person and the ramen comes out of a cutaway slot in the front. You order the ramen by computer before you get in and I don't think you even see the people making it. It's like magic. The game starts at 8pm and it will go on till 11ish. The ramen place is right around the corner. I can't promise that it will be delicious, but I will promise i...

You ate WHERE?

I don't normally find myself at casual dining chains very often in the US - well, The Cheesecake Factory and CPK are rare exceptions, and local chains don't count (i.e. I love you, Boloco ). However, familiarity often brings comfort, especially when you're thousands of miles away from a decent bowl of garlic smashed potatoes. Sometimes, it's just not a jjiggae type of day, if you know what I mean. That feeling led me straight into the doors of Hooters . Well, that, and it was strategically located while I was starving and it started to pour (장마 is an entirely different conversation for another time.) I've visited Hooters on one other occasion (in Honolulu) and I have to say, based on my slightly grayed recollection, although I knew short shorts were part of the deal, the waitresses in Gangnam (강남) might have as well been wearing a one piece swimsuit. As my Korean friend looked about the restaurant, I couldn't help but laugh at his innocent remarks... "So,...

Pasta 12: Spaghetti on a $6 budget

Pasta 12 has unknowingly become a default for satisfying impulse pasta cravings on a budget in Sinchon (신촌). I've visited the quaintly-decorated basement restaurant a handful of times, mostly for lunch, where you can order any dish on the menu for less than 6500 won. They'll even throw in a small salad, a beverage (cola/cider/hot coffee), and of course, sweet pickles (to cut the grease, according to Koreans.) Not a bad deal. The menu is oddly separated into "pasta" and "spaghetti" (hmm, I thought spaghetti was pasta?) and then conveniently divided by sauce type: tomato, tomato-cream, cream, Shanghai (insert question mark here), soy cream, olive oil, and demi-glace. (Where's the pesto?) But the real prize winner here is the soy cream mushroom spaghetti . Yes, I said soy milk - all the richness with a subtle nuttiness and half the fat (maybe), helping us all keep (or aspire to) the all important "S line" trend! Pasta 12 is located next door to ...
