If you are traveling to Seoul and you're looking for a high-end beef restaurant that won't disappoint, then Han6gam is a safe bet. They have the stylings of a high-end steak restaurant in a modern, Korean style. Some of the more established, high-end Korean restaurants look like a grandmother's house with outdated moldings, furniture and faux-chandeliers (Sorry, but Woo-lae Oak Eujiro, you need a makeover).

Located in the food section of the new Gran Seoul Mall near Jongak station, this is a high-end beef restaurant with upscale atmosphere, food styling, service, and great food. Even though they have a decent wine list, Han6gam doesn't charge corkage so connoisseurs can pair the beef with whichever wine they have in their cellar (this is as of Feb 18, 2015...check, this might change in the future). Oh, a great tip is to get your wine from the department store or from larger supermarkets like E-mart and you'll save at least 50,000 won.

Their Korean beef is pristine, very high quality, dry-aged, and marbled like snowflakes. It’s not cheap. A portion for one will start at 35,000 won and can go up to hundreds of thousands for something like their massive Bone-in Rib Eye Platter. The platter did look amazing and if I win the lottery or get a huge promotion, this is the place I will be going to celebrate. They use fine oak charcoal to grill the meat at the table; sauces and dips such as fresh wasabi, dijon mustard and sea salt; and salads, kimchi and side dishes to go with the meal. They don't go crazy with the side dishes, they are all clean tasting and refreshingly sharp.

The fresh cut and aged beef are great. I had their marinated beef ribs (38,000). I don't recommend you get these. The sauce wasn't anything special and it didn't marinate the beef in a way that made it super tender. For this, specialty dish, I recommend Hong Neung Galbi. Their sirloin and ribeye are of outstanding quality and cooking it right at the table made it that much better.

One quip, I had was it the servie. It is curt and professional, but trying to do French-style service for Korean barbecue is quite counter- intuitive. We had the server cook our meat at a separate table so she wouldn’t hover over us. I feel that part of the excitement of eating Korean barbecue is having the meat cooked in front of me. I am sure by now they have the service issue resolved. Another exciting aspect was how they served the soju. The soju is frozen and then they hit it with a rubber mallet to break up the ice crystals. Han6gam even has dessert: homemade ice cream topped with roasted bean powder. This is a fine dining restaurant that I feel guests would find quite impressive.
