Korean Roasted Eel in Asan

Recently I took a weekend trip to Asan. Asan is the birthplace of the famous war hero, Admiral Yi Sun-shin. It is apparently also famous for their natural hot springs. I went to one of those hot springs and I can't say I was very impressed. The best part of the trip to Asan was going to this restaurant Yeon Chun (연춘) for Korean Roasted Eel. The restaurant is quite far from the train station. I think you can get close to the location by taking the subway, but we had to take a taxi and it cost about 16,000 won ($16.00) to get there. The restaurant is located right on a pond and the eating area is a dock right on the water. The area is very picturesque- it's surrounded by gnarled oak trees. Here is a view of the pond from our seat. The place is famous for the eel, so that's what I recommend you get. If you are not an eel fan, I'm sure that the Chicken Roasted with Vegetables is pretty good and I am intrigued by the eel porridge (장어죽) they have on the menu. You can get o...

Seoul Eats Redux: Eel (Jang-o)

When it gets hot, I like to eat Korean Jang-o. My favorite place is up by Hongdae at a place called Jang-o-rang. I went there like 1 year ago and I think I'll have to go back there soon. Here is a recap of the review: Eel in the City By Daniel Gray Freshwater eel is a summertime specialty. Slowly grilled, the flesh has a marbled quality like a fine rib eye steak, a silky texture that resembles lobster. It melts in your mouth seasoned only with salt, but when lathered with a soy glaze the smell simply wafts up to your hypothalamus and makes itself a permanent fixture. While I was making my excursion to “Jangeorang” in Hongdae, trying to convince my expatriate friends to come join me for grilled eel and soy marinated crab was like trying to pick all the red pepper flakes out of kimchi. When I approached my Korean friends, it was the complete opposite reaction. One of my friends even canceled a date in order to have a meal of eel. This differing reaction made me wonder. Why do some pe...

Sunday Sunday Sunday

It's been a day of strange footwear. If you look closely here, you'll see a guy with sneaks so gold, a pimp would bow down. I love the long shorts and the stripe shirt he has to match them with. And here is a perfect example of what one should not wear with sandals. Grilled Eel for dinner. I'll have more to blog about soon about whom I had dinner with^^ Dan

Jangeorang: Grilled Eel in Seoul

My article is up on the Seoul Tourism website. Lunalil, Mike, Sosun, Ji-hyun, and I went there about 3 weeks ago for some delicious grilled fish. Please go there and leave a comment^^;; Here's the article. Dan Freshwater eel is a summertime specialty. Why do some people have a prejudice against eel? I guess some people associate it with evil because it looks like a snake or maybe it’s the name: eel. It sounds like a murmur of disgust rather than the name of an epicurean e...

A weekend in Food

I was lucky enough to get a couple of bloggers and good friends to come out to Hongdae with me on Sunday. I spent the morning with my roomie Carol and we went to Myeongdong Gyoja for the best calguksu in Korea. In the evening I went out with Lunalil , Mike, Sosun, and the photographer extraordinaire: Jess to check out Jangeorang and Cacoaboom. It was a great day. I'll have a full review of Jangeorang soon. We found a cafe across the street from Jangeorang called Starwars coffee! Also, the Korean company CJ is starting to sell Indian prepacked meals. I am going to have to give them a try at some point.
