Hey Aussies! What's the most popular Ethnic Cuisine in Australia?

Daniel Lee Gray
I'm putting this out there for my Australian Readers, because my research shows that that Australia has a very unique food culture that puts an emphasis on locally grown and raised ingredients fused with Asian and Mediterranean influences. Is that too broad an assessment?

Oh, the other stuff that comes up is that Aussies like Meat Pies, Lamingtons, Veggiemite, BBQ, and lots of ketchup.

Please speak up and leave a comment!

  1. your assessment is pretty spot on i reckkon :) Also us aussie like lots and lots of coffee; heaps of cafes around everywhere!

theres no singular popular ethnic cuisine here, is pretty much a mish mash of different ones; and the dominant one can differ according to where you live. Eg i live in sydney but there's different suburbs you would go to if you wanted a concentration good authentic places - eg, leichhardt for italian, cabramatta for viet, strathfield for korean etc

i believe if you look at it very very broadly some of the most popular ethnic cuisines (exlcuding mod aus/british influences) are:
    - italian
    - greek
    - lebanese
    - turkish
    - vietnamese
    - thai
    - chinese
    - indian
    - japanese

but like i said, most ethinic cusines are quite substantially represented. im a full blooded korean but when i was a kid (ie 5yrs) some of my favourite foods were bah minh, har gow, kebabs and samosas - go figure lol. hope this helps :)

Yes, the food in Australia is very diverse! I can't single out the most popular Ethnic cuisine in Australia but i guess it leans towards asian style cuisine such as Vietnamese, Thai, and Malay.

I live in Perth which is more quiet and less of a hub for food, shopping etc. (in comparison to Melbourne and/or Sydney). But we still have alot of variety !

Lol there is more to us Aussies then meat pies, flip flops, BBQ's and Vegemite ! haha =]

Cuisine wise we are very open minded, and accepting of new flavours and dishes and in the past few years Autralian Restaurants hav really emphasise on using locally grown and unique products.
