Omija Choux at Pierre Gagnaire's Bakery at Lotte Hotel

I have a late start today before starting my day so I am at Pierre Gagnaire's Bakery to get some coffee and some cake. It is located in the lobby of the hotel at Deli Hans and you'll see the amazing desserts in the cases. There are a range of desserts from macaroons, eclairs and cakes. I decided to get a light and buttery citron cake and a omija choux. The citron cake was bright and rich with a light sugary crunch. The omija choux had light whipped cream that was not too sweet and it went well with the complex omija filling. Delicious and a fine way to start my day.

Discussions at the Seoul Eats Facebook Group: The Chili Dog and the Service Scandal

The Seoul Eats Facebook Group is an interesting community. There are over 1600 members and there are constant discussions about food there. We do meet ups once in a while as well and I am planning more in the future. A recent discussion that came up is about where to get the best chili dog and then it turned into a discussion about how service in Korea needs to change. This is something that I agree with. There are some places that have awful service and they need to change or get out of the hospitality business. Here is the discussion and you can join the group here  by clicking on the link. Michelle's Ice Cream Diaries: National flower bread ice cream, so complex! (국화빵 아이스크림)

Michelle's Ice Cream Diaries: National flower bread ice cream, so complex! (국화빵 아이스크림) So this is what I do instead of working, I photo-document and dissect my ice cream. But come on~ you've gotta hand it to the Koreans for coming up with some awesome ice cream concoctions! So far this is my favorite, Gookhwabbang(국화빵) ice cream love the layering of all the textures and the red bean flavor mixed with the vanilla ice cream. So chewy, so cold, so good. Quick Bites: US Embassy, Baum Kuchen and Cocktails

Last week was a good foodie week. Our cooking classes and tours have been busy so we have met people from all over the world. I even learned about the very dangerous world of Australia where there are drop bears and hoop snakes. I was even lucky enough to get invited to the US Ambassador Sung's House to welcome the California food exporters. Other things I saw and ate this week were omija Makgeolli and chestnut Makgeolli at a good place in Insadong. Sorry, I can't remember the name. For a bakery story I was working on, I went over to Haru no Yuki. They had these Baum Kuchen things that were very expensive but also quite delicious. At 14,000 won the piranae was a coffee layered cake that was a bit dry but was good with whipped cream. I can appreciate the intricacy but I am not so sure about the taste. Here are some of our food tour guests. Here is a barley rice with doengjang stew I had for dinner one night. It was Dustin's Birthday on Saturday so we went out and we all...

Le Alaska: A Fine Bakery with Excellent Sandwiches

Le Alaska looks like a quaint little bakery over by Apgujeong's Rodeo street but it is surprisingly big. There is a porch and a large seating area in the back. They offer a wide range of baked goods, coffees, shaved ice desserts and sandwiches. Their croissants and flavored breads such as vegetable bakes and chocolate dipped croissants are excellent. Their regular loaves have excellent crunch and texture- you're not getting faux bread here. They are quite creative in their presentation and their flavoring as well. They have iced popovers, banana apple breads and even praline layered breads. Since I had something sweet to start, I went with the braided spinach bread. They rolled the bread around the vegetables so they stayed separate from the bread. Sandwiches Popovers They pride themselves on using French flour. For those looking for something more "Asian." Here is red bean stuffed bread, wrapped sausage, streudel bread and bagels. Interior Shot I ordered a Rosemary h...

WTF: An Butter Bread: Butter, Sweet Red Bean on Bread

Spotted over in Hongdae, Bread 05, always seems to have a line out the door of its little bakeshop and everyone is in line for their An Butter Bread. It is a wonderfully crusty and soft cibatta roll stuffed with a sliver of butter and sweet red bean. The butter was good, the red bean made this…not so good. The butter was also not melted and I don't think it was supposed to be. Meh. Interesting, but never again. I would go there to get the bread with butter minus the red bean next time. If you are into red bean though, I recommend you check it out. Bread 05 Mapo-gu Seogyo-dong 408-25 070-7656-9905 Open 8am-10pm Closed Monday Hongdae View Seoul Eats Favorites Map in a larger map
