Gyeongju at Night.

Image
On my night walk with friends I visited anapji pond and the cheomseomdae observatory. I took some long exposure shots with an ND filter to capture the glow and water's reflection. I recommend seeing Gyeongju at night. Much prettier and not as hot! Korea Food Trend: Fat Macaroons and Tiramisu in a cup

Image
Tiramisu in a cup and Fat Macaroons #뚱카롱 are all the rage in Ikseon-dong. It's interesting to see how Korea's sweet tooth has developed. Macaroons have been popular for a while but the fat & crazy flavored ones is now an example of k-food (a Korean twist on cuisine). Other popular things have been dirty coffee and falling cheese (like raclettes). In Jeonju Beef jeon: an egg dipped and shallow-fried fritter is the new hit thing. The younger generation seems to have developed an appetite for sweet and super savory. The other interesting developments is how the designs of the stores are more vintage. Mangwon Tiramisu is a great example since their logo looks like the old new village movement logo. Metal framed doors, dark wood paneled walls, windows with vinyl lettering are popular these days. Let's see where k-food will go from here. [Naver Map] Mangwondong Tiramisu Ikseon Branch 22 Supyo-ro 28-gil Jongno-gu Seoul http://naver.me/5j7siV10 #k-food, #seou

Craft beer at Nomadic Brewing Company in Jeonju, South Korea

Image
Finally a great craft brewery in Jeonju. The owner/brewmaster is making some amazing beers using old recipes mixed with some new ingredients and experiments. It's s new place so the brewer is getting used to the region and the clientele. I think this is one of the magical things about craft breweries: they adapt, change and evolve to their locals.  John and his wife's brewery/restaurant has a modern yet rustic feel. They are avid campers so it has a natural, forest vibe. Right now they have 8 beers on tap. The faves were the American Wheat, IPA, and an Amber. They have great looking pizzas as well have serve homemade popcorn as beer snacks. It's a great place and not too far from Jeonju's hanok village.  [Naver Map] Jeonbuk Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si Jungang-dong 2(i)-ga 63 http://naver.me/GtPHSgVh Thank you John for the beer class and tasting @nomadicbrewingco  Craft beer is becoming a hit in Korea and finally there is a good place in Jeonju for i

After school snacks and a game of chess.

Image
Being a father means that I have to be a chef/nutritionist/entertainer. Of course I would love to feed them all veggies and healthy stuff but sometimes you just have to get fuel into the tank. The Yakut yogurt is a staple...sigh. I have made my own organic yogurt drinks for the kids but it went to waste. The macaroons are for color and the grilled cheese is cut kid size. The cheese is organic so I guess that is ok. At least they ate it all and later I snuck veggies into their rice and soup. Afterwards Hazel and I played a game of chess and she is starting to understand the rules.

Kimchi cooked in pork fat, pork cooked in kimchi at 시골김치삼겹살

Image
I know. It looks like a red hot mess but if you are in Korea you have to get kimchi and pork belly bbq. Kimchi cooked in pork fat and pork cooked with kimchi is an amazing combination kinda like salted caramel ice cream. It doesn't sound like it will work but it does. My favorite ones are in the hapjeong area on the north west part of Seoul. Get the pork belly and the jowl. I love the curry powder to dip it into as well. After you eat all the kimchi and the pork use the bits to make a fried rice with some fish rod and roasted seaweed flakes. Amazing. The only one problem is that you will smell like kimchi and pork fat (but is that a bad thing?).  [Naver Map] Sigol Kimchi Grilled Pork Belly No. 1 Main Branch 110 World Cup-ro Mapo-gu Seoul http://naver.me/I5licTYR #kimchi #시골김치삼겹살 #seouleats #koreafood #foodporn #love #instagood #beautiful #food #korea #instafood #instatravel #travelgram  #goodeats #foodblogger #푸드스타그램 #맛스타그램 #맛있어 #좋아요 #냠냠 #데일리 #맞팔 #데일리 #맛있다 #먹스타그램

Egg Omelette Kimbap

Image
Jinsunja Rolled Omelette Gimbap is one of my favorite comfort foods. It is like an sesame omarice in a chopstick-friendly form. There are many imitators but the pickles and thin slices of fillings in Jinsunja's kimbap make it stand out from the rest. There are franchises around the country. Ask for extra pickles.  #진순자계란말이김밥  Bongcheon Main Branch 19 Cheongnyong 1-gil Gwanak-gu Seoul http://naver.me/F7wEOfpk

Is the Gomtang at Hadonggwan Worthy is a Michelin Star?

Image
Hadonggwan's gomtang is still made the same way it always has. Well, at least the first one is. The broth is rich yet not overpowering and the quality of the rice is top notch. It's a very good lunch but I do question it's inclusion in the Michelin Guide. Mainly because the focuses is only on the main dish which they haven't changed for over 70 years. Without the backstory, it might not live up to expectations. It's a great baseline dish for Korean cuisine, but I feel it's more nostalgia than being the pinnacle of Korean cuisine. I was lucky to interview the family that runs the restaurant and the have a meticulous way on sourcing ingredients and in preparation. The dining experience itself is jarring. Once you enter, you are asked how many people. Then you must order at the counter and pay before you sit. 2 minutes later your food comes out without any explanation. Water is self service as well. I do recommend visitors to go there, but understand it is quite

RIP Molly Holt of Holt International

Image
It's a sad day that Molly Holt passed away. She dedicated her entire life to helping orphans and Korea. When her father and mother felt they needed to provide medical care, she went to nursing school and got a degree and returned to Korea to help the sick and needy. She lived in Ilsan where she continued to care for the less fortunate. The Holt organization was formed because there was no one helping Korean orphans. Without the efforts of Molly and her entire family, I and many others would have had a very different life. I am grateful for their help. I send my condolences. Molly, Rest In Peace. Thank you, Dan  https://www.holtinternational.org/magazine/2013/07/17/the-woman-with-miraculous-tears/

Moon Hotteok at Jeonju’s Night Market

Image
The Night Market in Jeonju is an amazing food market. On Friday and Saturday night they open up food stalls to sell all sorts of traditional and new street foods. Moon Hotteok has the nicest and most optimistic cooks and the nut-stuffed caramel donuts( hotteok) are amazing.  [Naver Map] Jeonju Nambu Market Hanok Village Night Market Jeon-dong Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si Jeollabuk-do http://naver.me/xaDWn5bw   #seouleats #koreafood #foodporn #love #instagood #beautiful #food #korea #instafood #instatravel #travelgram  #goodeats #foodblogger #푸드스타그램 #맛스타그램 #맛있어 #좋아요 #냠냠 #데일리 #맞팔 #데일리 #맛있다 #먹스타그램
