Review: Delicious Sweet and Savory Bonchu Chicken (Bongchu Jjimdak)

Bongchu Jjimdak is still one of my favorite Korean meals regardless of how many times I have eaten it. It's the sauce that makes it. It's savory and sweet with nice heat from the red chilies. The sauce permeates into the chicken, the potatoes, and thick dang myeon (sweet potato noodles). The carrots and cucumbers add freshness and the dish is warm and filling- especially on cold winter days.  I love that the chicken is not dry. The flavors really get all into it and the chicken on the bone adds additional flavor to the sauce.  The best way to eat this is with rice. It will sop up the sauce. I recommend getting it with nurungji or scorched rice. The crispy rice will sop up the delicious sauce and tastes like a pregnant fried rice.  Bongchu is a chain and you can find them everywhere but I like the one in Insadong and in Hyewha.  Dan Bongchu Jjimdak Jongnogu Insadong Insadonggil 20 Seoul, South Korea  Geoloc: 37.57254,126.98669

Review: Julio's Somewhat Mexican Cuisine

Julios is a popular Mexican-themed restaurant in Korea. They have 4 locations that I know of and they were one of the Mexican food-trend leaders here like 5 years ago. I remember going to their first location by Gangnam Station and being pleasantly impressed. It tasted "authenticish." These days Mexican food has upped their game with restaurants such as Vatos, Coreanos, and Gusto Taco. Julios is no longer leading the trend, but following, and they are trying to maintain the flavor profile their Korean clientele expect.  The results are a train wreck-mishmash that is Korean/Mexican-esque with a bit of Cajun and a bit of Italian. Yeah, they need a chef to come in and right this ship.  Let me explain There was a Cajun hot sauce at the table and Italian dressing on my salad that had shredded cheddar and Reggiano? Cheese. My pork tacos were dry and the pork was flavorless. My wife's enchilada was more of a rice roll smothered in tangy tomato sauce and cheese. The enchilada was...

Bonbon - A Very Welcome Italian Restaurant and Lounge in Hongdae

Last week I was invited to check out a new Italian Restaurant and Lounge in the heart of Hongdae. Bonbon was first started in Daejeon several years back where it quickly expanded to two locations. Building on the success enjoyed in Daejon, Bonbon Hongdae was opened in May of this year. First of all, the location is great. Located directly next to the infamous music park, it's not hard to find. In fact, it's hard to miss if you're heading over to NB, Club Naked, or many of the other clubs located near by. As you can see from the pictures the interior decorations are bright, modern, and tasteful. High ceilings, plenty of floor space, ample room between tables, and an open patio all help to open up the interior and make it feel very spacious. Have no fear though, the AC is blasting on the inside and kept us at a nice temperature. DJ Spencer was spinning tracks all night, and during the two hours I was there from 6-8 on a Friday night I noticed the rhythm distinctly quicken. Du...
