American Thanksgiving in Seoul: 2010

Picture from Funtim e Guide Published in the November Issue of Seoul Magazine. Reprinted by permission.  By Daniel Gray Whatever it takes, people make Thanksgiving happen. During my last Thanksgiving, I heard numerous stories of turkeys being cooked in small convection ovens and even in rice cookers. I also heard of groups of families and friends that braved long lines and the cold to eat turkey, pumpkin, pie, at hotels and in restaurants. Luckily, American Thanksgiving has become more popular in the last few years. Western grocery stores, Costcos, and many hotels are getting ready for this foreign holiday. Here’s a round up of how you can celebrate American Thanksgiving this year. Cook Your Own Turkey The Haddon House in Hannamdong always has all the essentials for thanksgiving. Turkeys are 10,000 won a kilogram with sizes ranging from 3-5 kilos. They also have pumpkin pie mix (9,000 won), cranberry sauce (6,000 won), and stuffing- all that you need. Costco ...

Leftovers: Turkey Cranberry Sandwich

This is my favorite part of the holidays. The day after-- and the the next week-- I get to have Turkey sandwiches. My favorite sandwich is just a roll with a dab of butter on one side, some cranberry sauce and turkey. It is essential that the sandwich is seasoned with lots of black pepper. Dan

Do not Covet my Turkey Leg

You can have the thigh. This is the best part of the turkey and if I don't at least one turkey leg a year, my year will be ruined. I cannot-- and will not-- share the leg. While I eat it I like to act like a barbarian. I tear off bits of meat with my teeth, grunt, fart, and drink beer. Now if I only liked football, then I could really have the true American experience. I remember watching my uncles act this way during our Christmas gatherings and they always stole the legs...bastards. It's nice to live in a country where the turkey is a new concept. Happy Holidays everyone! Dan

The Dragon Hill Deli in Seoul Phone Number Update

So, apparently the number I had for the Dragon Hill is the old one and it is no longer in use. I e-mailed Chef Tim Mitchell of the Dragon Hill Lodge and here is his response: Hi Daniel, The holiday dinners are available. We deliver to gate 17, which is near Dongbu Ichon Dong subway station, close to the National Museum. I have enclosed a .pdf copy of what we have available. You can reply to all for your order, or call. The correct number for us is 02 6903 6716 for the Deli, 02 6903 6718 to speak to Ms. Kim the Deli manager, or my direct number is 02 6903 6777. If your order is over $250, we will take off 5%, and over $1000, 10%. We need 1 day on smaller orders, or 2 days for orders over 10 turkeys. Thanks again! My Best, Tim I just placed my order for the 24th and on the 25th. I'll be hosting a Christmas Dinner on the 24th and then I'll be going to an orphanage to help cook Christmas dinner on the 25th. Oh! And they will deliver my Turkey to Gate 3, which is...

Get Your Turkey from US. Military Base: Dragon Hill Lodge

The military base has discontinued this service http://www.dragonhilllodge.com/main.html The rumors are true. You can order a turkey from the base and then pick it up. Here's a note I got from my friend Erica: Hey dan, Just wanted to let you know that you can order turkey on base and they will delived to the gate. Gate 10 is the south gate opposite war memorial. Gate 5 is the north gate (main gate)...for your blog I ordered two of them last year and it was enough for about 25 people. I would recommend you get some extra sides with it and have a car ready to take your bird home. Keep in mind that the cost is in DOLLARS, but they will take Korean won. You just need to convert to the right rate. Happy Eating, Dan PS. WEIRD, but every time I try to call the number it says that the number is disconnected. I think they temporarily disconnected it for now. Has anyone had any luck?  My friend just called and placed the order. I think they shut off the phone before 4pm.
