Agreed it's no Cake Man Raven's red velvet cream cheese frosting cake (I cry at night dreaming of that heavenly cream cheese frosting) in Clinton Hill OR sugar sweet sunshine cupcakes in the LES... but hey, "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more."
So with that said, I present to you goodovening cupcake in Shinsa, Garosugil (신사 가로수길). Everything on the menu = 4,500won. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad? shrug.

Earl grey cake and frosting, love love love any dessert items infused with earl grey tea, so this deserves a mighty tasty in my book.

The red velvet cupcake, was surprisingly yum! No cream cheese frosting here, but with a smooth cup of americano in hand it was a pleasant surprise.
Strawberry cake and raspberry frosting
Pumpkin cake and peanut butter frosting
Chocolate cake and dark chocolate frosting

There's a cupcake shop next to Hakatabunko (sp?) ramen near Hongdae called "Sweetpea." I love their miniature cupcakes, they taste home made, and the interior (as with most Korean cafes) is very well done and cute. Good place to take a date.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...the ones I ate I didn't like at all. Too dry and I didn't even finish them *GASP* ;(

@ Chris O'Neal
ReplyDeleteThanks for the rec. will continue quest to find "the best cupcakes in Seoul" (if it exists). Yes, cafe interiors is one thing Koreans are very good at, I should start collecting images of that (hm, light bulb!).
@ Jenny Cleary
Argh, dry cupcakes, I agree should be avoided like the plague. Sadly the day we ate it, it was better than most of our many failed attempts in Seoul. Actually when we asked they said they don't bake the cakes on premise, they only make the frosting. Which is probably not a good start. :( Please by all means, keep us posted on what goodies you find in the cupcake world. :)
mm.
I nominate justamoment in Dongbu Ichon dong. Their cupcakes aren't as fancy or at all decorated like goodevening or Lucy's but simple. I just love the frosting. It's absolutely delectable.
ReplyDeleteDirections: Find Sinyongsan elementary school and walk west towards the shops. It's on the second floor of a dingy plaza. Or exit Ichon station from exit 4 Dongbu Ichon dong and then straight 50m, right 50m then look for the dingy plaza.
Some good cupcake cafes (IMHO)

Both of them bake their cake on premises.
They also use 'real butter' as opposed to margarine (yuk!) or real cream rather than oil-based artificial cream (yuk again!) for the icing.
Minon especially uses real, fresh (or dried) fruits for icing. So good~!
