iWant: Apple iPad in Seoul, Korea

Daniel Lee Gray
I am an Apple Fanboy. I mean I've only used Apple computers while I have lived in Korea. They simply fit me. They are elegant, the operating system is visual and stable, and they are powerful enough to do all the multimedia things that I have always wanted to do.

Now I really want the iPad. I think that it will really be great for all the work that I do. Most of my work involves working with clients, writing, and creating. Even though I would love to be able to pull out my laptop and just work anywhere, I feel that a laptop needs a desk. I feel like with the iPad, I could walk around and work. With all the food that I eat, I think this great for my health. I love to walk and work. I know this sounds weird, but I like to walk while reading books.

Anyway, I think that this product will be useful for cooks and restaurants as well. At this price point, I could see these products becoming the ordering consoles for restaurants and even menus. I could see chefs using these in the kitchens to write down recipes, keep inventory, and many other functions.

This product is going to be a game changer, but I think more for business and retail applications.

Sure, I would like an external camera (I don't want one for visual chat) and I would like an SD slot, but...at this price point, I can't complain. It's a thousand times better than a netbook. I had an MSI wind in the past and I got rid of it after a couple of months. You can read about it here: http://www.seouleats.com/2008/08/msi-wind-for-blogging.html

I can't wait until this product comes to Seoul.

  1. To be honest, I can't see how this is anything more than an overgrown iphone. Though at the price it would still be a cool toy to have!

I want one too man, it is functional to me (and I have an iPod touch and will probably succumb to the Korean iPhone as well)..

It's gonna be great for my work, and it seems a good size/weight to sit with in the car on the way to work, or sit around with at a coffee shop. I'll get a lot more done everyday. The iPod/iPhone can do a lot of the same things as the iPad, true, but screen real estate will be king for me. Small enough to be portable, but big enough to get ideas across with.

I hope KTF follows the AT&T example and sells pre-paid data without a contract. Unlimited data for $30 would be nice, but is probably not happening. I think SK Telecom charges me something like 100,000W/month for 20 mbs transfer on my Blackberry, or something ridiculous. :\

  3. I think the iPad is a media consumption device more than it is a production tool. But I do agree it is a game changer, only because the iPad is the first step towards capacitive touch computing in all of our devices (laptop, desktop, etc. etc.), and it bridges even more between us and the cloud. I've written more about here if you're interested. :)

  6. I hope in Korea we will also be able to prepay for the 3G so we don't have to go through all the trouble of the contract. It would be great for travel if we can just prepay for 3G to each country we visit.

  7. Does anyone know when the wi-fi only version will be available in Korea and how much it will cost?

  10. I must admit... after 2 days of using it, I am convinced that I will get a lot of use from my new iPad. Yes, I wish it had a camera. Yes, I wish it had an sd slot. However, the user experience is fantastic and I expect the apps that will be developed over the next year to be terrific. Typing is easier than I thought. The Wordpress app is nice. Gaming is amazing.

I already use a MacBook Pro for work and carry an iPhone most everywhere I go... but I will be integrating this new toy into my workflow more and more over the next several weeks.

Interested to see how it performs on the flight to Singapore tomorrow...
