Damn you Apple! Give me a Steve Jobs Edition (SJE) iPhone SE2

Let's make Apple great again. It's not even about the money. It's the core philosophy of what made Apple such a great company. It is supposed to augment and supplement reality and not replace it. Sorry but I want an iPhone SE2. The size was perfect and I just loved the feel of it in my hands and in my pocket. Dang it. I hate the lumpy block of the iPhone 6s Plus. It was the phone I got because I thought I could use it as an iPad replacement. Nah. Doesn't work. I have the iPad 2018 and it is amazing. The processor on it is so fast and the good apps (the ones without subscriptions) are amazing on it.  I use my iPad for editing pictures and video because it is faster than my MacBook Pro 2015 with an eGPU. I will be buying a iPad Air 2018. It's just too good to pass up. The processor is fast, the body is sturdy and I don't have to use Face ID. I am not a fan of it.  Plus, I can buy one with 256gigs and it is probably faster and more intuitive than a top of...

Thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy s10 e + Fold

Meh. I think Samsung is trying to sell this phone as a laptop & camera replacement. It's supposed to be the phone for all seasons. It also seems targeted at non-tech people and SNS media people that dream of being an Instagram star. It's too big. And it is blingy but it's not blingy enough to really impress anyone. Ultrasonic fingertip sensor? It just sounds like a lot of stuff that will break in time. It's not a groundbreaking phone. It's like the Samsung phones of old. The old flip phones that had it all but did nothing well. Plus, it's still not as fast as the iPhone even with the new processor and extra ram. And the fold? Who needs it and who will use it? It's just a novelty like the flip and turn screens. Also, the first person to sit on it and break it will start a firestorm of ridicule. Lol. I think phones have come full circle. I've had them all and the most important thing for a phone is security, privacy and navigation. Apple and iOS give...

Tech Stuff: The New Apples Photo App is a Downgrade, Not Upgrade

Apple New Photos App 2015 Just a quick review on this new update by Apple, I don't really see any improvements and there is a serious flaw: you can't drag and drop photos from the app into another application like a blog. You can't even find the file, because it takes the files hostage like it did in the past. The filters and adjustments aren't amazing, I find that Fotor is better and or I would rather just drop into VSCO and back. Plus I think they should have added preview before you import (something Lightroom offers and I find invaluable.) Sigh...I was really looking forward to this but it is just a way to sell you on iCloud (20 gigs for $.99). But why do this option when flickr offers a terabyte for free. Basically, the app is trying to take all of your photos hostage. Been there, done that. I migrated everything to flickr and I will use Lightroom. Oh...thanks apple, my icloud storage is now full. I'm ok with that. I'm moving on. new Photos A...

New Recommendation: Rebtel International Calling Plans for Expatriates

The company is Rebtel and they offer cheap calls for expatriates. It's a new service where they will give you a local telephone number so people can call you without complicated codes to put in or having the other person having to use an internet phone service.    Benefits of affordable International  calls for the expatriates Most expatriates experience  a tough phase while moving abroad. Leaving your home and flying to a  land you have never known does evoke the feeling of loneliness. For the older people it’s  more so. Grandchildren grow up so quickly while grandparents might grow  to be less competent than they once were.  Busy with overseas business  or studies can make you feel homesick at a certain stage but maybe hearing  the voice of family or friend is a way to combat isolation. The cost of living especially  for expatriates in another country is a huge cost. And one needs to  maintain a budget that...

iWant: Apple iPad in Seoul, Korea

I am an Apple Fanboy. I mean I've only used Apple computers while I have lived in Korea. They simply fit me. They are elegant, the operating system is visual and stable, and they are powerful enough to do all the multimedia things that I have always wanted to do. Now I really want the iPad. I think that it will really be great for all the work that I do. Most of my work involves working with clients, writing, and creating. Even though I would love to be able to pull out my laptop and just work anywhere, I feel that a laptop needs a desk. I feel like with the iPad, I could walk around and work. With all the food that I eat, I think this great for my health. I love to walk and work. I know this sounds weird, but I like to walk while reading books. Anyway, I think that this product will be useful for cooks and restaurants as well. At this price point, I could see these products becoming the ordering consoles for restaurants and even menus. I could see chefs using these in the kitc...

Fuel your car with coffee grinds!

I think that this would be a great idea. I could use my leftover coffee grinds to run my car. Dan http://www.economist.com/science/tq/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13174477 Biofuels: A novel form of biodiesel is derived from an unusual feedstock that is more commonly used to fuel mental activities: coffee In the case of coffee, the biodiesel is made from the leftover grounds, which would otherwise be thrown away or used as compost. Narasimharao Kondamudi, Susanta Mohapatra and Manoranjan Misra of the University of Nevada at Reno have found that coffee grounds can yield 10-15% of biodiesel by weight relatively easily. And when burned in an engine the fuel does not have an offensive smell—just a whiff of coffee. (Some biodiesels made from used cooking-oil produce exhaust that smells like a fast-food joint.) And after the diesel has been extracted, the coffee grounds can still be used for compost. Although some people make their own diesel at home from leftovers and recycled cooking oil, coff...

Pogue’s Photography Tips and Tricks

I thought this was very enlightening and awesome. I love the lampshade trick and the shaky picture trick. Here's the permalink. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/18/technology/personaltech/18pogue-email.html?partner=permalink&exprod=permalink Dan December 18, 2008 From the Desk of David Pogue Pogue’s Photography Tips and Tricks By DAVID POGUE It's a crazy time of year to be finishing a book. But in between present wrapping and tree trimming, that's exactly what I'm doing. It's a book on digital photography, which, as you probably know, is among my favorite hobbies. As I write, I keep coming across these important tips and saying to myself, "Man, this is what people REALLY need to know. I should pull them out into a special list at the back of the book called, 'The Best Photography Tricks of All Time,' so people can't miss it." So that's exactly what I'm doing. Thought I'd send you the list as it stands today, so ...

Learn Photography from the guru of photography: Metropolitician

The Metropolitician is an amazing photographer and he wants to give the amateur or aspiring tips on buying cameras. Photography in Korea, Part 1: Buying a Real Camera (a DSLR) I've been trying to do this post for a long time , but kept getting bogged down by other things. I get asked so often, "What kind of camera should I get if I want to get more seriously into photography?" that I felt it time to definitively answer the question. And I'm going to be blunt and partisan about it, but it's still the best answer I think to that particular question. If you are a Nikon fanboy, or don't agree with my recommendations, you can make a comment here or write your own post about it on your own blog; but these are the best recommendations and answer to that question I can think of, and I think people want a straight answer to questions like this, instead of hemming and hawing. Because it's a pretty stressful question. So here's are some issues and an...

Annalog is MacGyver

I've been meaning to share this tip for awhile now... it's a pretty good one. Now, that I'm back to using keys, I kind of miss the keypad locks back int the Motherland. Back at the officetel, I never had to worry about locking myself... that is, unless, the batteries died! If you're in your apartment, it's easy to switch out the batteries, but what do you do when you come home, and the keypad doesn't work because the batteries have died? Yikes! Fortunately, Cyndi's dad figured out the trick: All you need to do is run to the nearest mini-mart and purchase a 9V battery (the boxy one). Place the top of the battery (both circley parts) against the little circular metal "pad." You'll know that everything is working when the keypad lights up and makes some weird noises. You will have to hold the battery for awhile (around 5 minutes?). Caution: The battery will get quite hot (another sign that it's working), so I suggest that you wrap the battery ...

HTML is hard

I am trying to play around with this whole technology thing. I like the new layout, but I lost all my links. I'm trying to recover them now. What do you think? Is this better? I like the 3 panel layout more. Dan

Did my iPod destroy my Shure e2c headphones? Again!!!

I have a iPod, 5th generation video, that has seemingly destroyed two sets of Shure e2c headphones. I was using them normally and with the volume down-because if you play the sound too high on the e2cs, you'll blow out a fricken ear drum. Anyway, like this time and last, the left ear started to crackle and there is intermittent breakup of sound. If I stay in one place, I'm fine- I start moving and then I have problems. Sorry, but the whole point of having headphones is being able to be in motion. Luckily, Shure will fix them, but, I'm wondering if in 2 months if I'm going to have the exact same problem. This is what I found on the net. Over the last few months, we received couple of reports from our readers concerning a problem with some iPods, but it remained a rare event. MacFixit published a news about it, proving that the problem while being real remains exceptional. Some iPods (4G, Nano 1 and 2G, and Shuffle 1G) will suddenly start having problem affecting exc...

I got bored so I made an iPod dock...stand

I had old CD's that I never use anymore and lots of wine corks. I also found white grippy jawns that keep stuff from sliding around...so I put them all together and made a nice stand for my iPod. I know I should just go out and buy an iHome or something, but I don't want to sacrifice anymore real estate on my desk and I don't have any free electric outlets at the moment. Plus...the official ipod docks are like 50,000 won (and the iHomes are like 150,000 won.) check it out and make your own! (Oh...I put it all together with my hotglue gun.) Dan

Time to get rid of waste

I'm selling off stuff that I don't use anymore. One of them is my Samsung #11 Camera and my PC (I found out that I truly hate them and I'm going back to macs:) The camera is 6MP with shake reduction, 3x zoom, voice recording, and with PMP and movie functions. The PC is a AMD Sempron 2500 with a DVD player, ethernet, and a DVD player and CD burner. Here's the pics. If you're interested give me an e-mail :) Dan

Just say NO TO FortyTWO-DVD VXPLUS

This was my comment on TUAW the unofficial Apple Webblog about how often do I watch video on my ipod: I watch video all the time since I found videoera. It's an open source video converter and it works pretty well. It's FREE and FAST! And I'm not saying it's free and and then you get only like 10 minutes of converted video like some converters. The only drawback is that it's only for windows. I used to use FortyTWO-DVD VXPLUS, but randomly my paid license stopped working. I DO NOT RECOMMEND you buy Forty-TWODVD-VXPLUS (who the hell came up with that name anyway). The service sucks and I've tried to call them and e-mailed them like 4 times and nobody answers my e-mails.For the Mac Podner is a good bet. So learn from me kids, don't buy FortyTWO-DVD VX PLUS. It's the stupidiest name I've ever heard of for a software program and the programmers are equally retarded!

I'm selling a bunch of iPod and PC stuff on Daves Esl Cafe

Hello my name is Dan and I am a gadget-holic. I am selling off stuff that I've accumulated over time. Most of the items I thought would be useful at the time, but I find that they are simply gathering dust. There are many message boards in Korea that you can use to sell off stuff, but the one that I use most often is Daves ESL cafe I think it's the one that most people use and I've never had a problem yet (knock on wood.) Here's the pictures of stuff because I'm going to link my ad to this post. Hey, if anybody wants anything, give me an e-mail or leave a comment. Here's my ad from Daveseslcafe. Dan
