My buddy Zenkimchi was invited to speak at the intellectual forum, TED, and in this video he talks about Korean food and how to promote it overseas. I agree with many of his points and I feel that my work with O'ngo Food Communications has been doing a lot of what Joe is talking about in this video. I feel the best way to get people to enjoy a different culture's cuisine is through experience.
Joe, great video.

A well-shot video, and a good preso.
ReplyDeleteA couple issues, however:
Something about Americans preferring subtle advertising over big made me spit out my coffee.
Also, his knowledge of the Korean food scene in the west is very limited, which is to be expected. He doesn't live here and is getting all his info from Twitter. Of course most restaurants are not on Twitter.
Another issue, Korean food is generally not accessible to a non-Korean palate.
ReplyDeleteWith your delicious meats (samgyeopsal, galbi, bulgogi, samgyetang, etc) aside, the predominantly vegetable rich cuisine is either extremely bland or overly spiced with the same ingredient time and time again.
No country should have to push its own food so much in order for others to try it. People flock naturally to good food. They don't flock to Korean, unless of course, they're Korean. Koreans believe they are superior in everything, so that's not helpful to an international audience.
