Home Cooking: For Health, Quality, and Family

Smoked Duck with bean paste soup and banchan So, I am getting older (I'm 36 now and I have spent nearly a decade in Korea) and my old eating habits have caught up with me. I don't know exactly how it happened. I mean I had problems with my weight before but if I put my mind to it and exercised, I could work it off. Since I have gotten married and our family had our first child, I have had problems controlling my weight and it is seriously starting to scare me.  Maybe it is stress or maybe it is from the lack of pressure ( I mean I have it all right?: Wife, Baby, Home, Job...the newest Apple products:) The main thing that I have found out is that the daddy gut is a real thing and it is something that I am taking serious measures to cure. I have been exercising more and watching my weight. In the last 3 months I have lost 4 kilograms which is about 8.8 pounds so that is down from a very depressing 93 kilograms or 205 pounds. Never in my life have I been over 200 po...

Happy Birthday McStud, I mean Dad

My Dad I get my work ethnic from my Mom and Dad. My Dad was the guy that would work 60 hours a week at his company and still be up at 6am on Saturday morning to work on the yard. We had the best maintained yard in our neighborhood. I tried to get up and join him but I really liked sleep and Saturday Morning cartoons. I think I probably complained most of the time outside when I was younger, but now I miss it. It would be nice to wake up in the morning and work with nature. I wish I wasn't so prissy back then. I was always worried about bugs and dog poop and dirt. I also get my sense of adventure from my Dad. My father was born to hard working farmers in Tennessee and he worked his way through school and later joined the military where he traveled to Vietnam. He was a Green Beret Communication's expert and he has seen stuff many would never see. His nickname in the military was "Geek" and he has survived some of the toughest terrain known to man. He would joke...

Turtles, Headcheese, Blood Sausage and Beans

A tourist said to me, "Koreans eat some F$%#ed up stuff." Well, it could be perceived that way if you don't know the culture. Like my father said, "Food is food. Eat to live." My father has a very unusual palate- an adventurous palate. He would tell us about how he would eat nightcrawlers and cockroaches and frogs in the jungles of Vietnam while we ate our boring macaroni and cheese and fish sticks at dinner. My sisters and I would say, "Gross." And my mother would say, "Larry, stop it. We're eating." What was it exactly we were eating? Boring processed food that sucked all the life out of what was once filled with it. My father liked to eat food that-for him- was filled with life. When we went to the store, his mouth would salivate over blood and tongue cold cuts that he would put between White Wonder Bread with a healthy swab of Miracle Whip. A mid meal treat for him was potted meat sandwiches. When he went out to dinner he sought s...

I gotta do what momma says

My mother likes to read my blog but she said that I often do not label my pictures so it is difficult for her, "to know what the heck" she is looking at. So what momma says, I gotta do, so I'll try to label my pictures from now on. Let's get started. Ramen from Koko-ro Ramen in Sincheon Rabbit Rice Cake from the Seoul Rice Cake Fair
