Seoul Eats Instagram: Avocade Sandwich from Casa Deli

Avocado Sandwich from Casa Deli Had a legit avocado bacon sandwich that only cost me 5,500 at Casa Deli by Ikseongdong. Great bread and fresh ingredients. Support this local cafe! I have seen too many great little places go out of business because of a lack of customers. They will also change the concept in order to localize it. This place is good as it is so let's show our appreciation It's right next to the tteok museum in Jongno 3ga. #avocado #sandwich

Spicy Beef Galbijjim in Jongno

Spicy Galbijjim at Bujagalbi My regular haunts in Korea seem to be split these days in the Jongno area and the Itaewon area because of my work and home- both areas are quite good for food. The other night I was in the mood for Kamjatang, but...one of my friends had an issue with sitting on the floor so we decided to check out this spicy galbijjim place I had been eying for a while. The place is right out Jongno 3-ga Station exit 2-1, so not far from my work. The interior is just regular. I think there were tacky Christmas lights hanging and the place had a few ajossis and ajummas having some food with soju- a pretty laid back place. We ordered the Spicy Galbijjim and it came out pretty fast. The tender pieces of meat were tender on the bone and it sat in a blood red broth. In the broth was also some sweet potato noodles, rice cake, mushrooms and some minari (edible chrysanthemum).  The food was spicy. Really spicy. Now, not spicy and flavorful and not spicy right up fr...

Korean Streetfood Carts

Who needs a truck when you have a cart? The street carts in Jongno have been putting up some original stuff these days and you could spend a whole afternoon munching and walking along the way. Here are some of the more interesting carts I have encountered. Review: Halmoni Calguksu (Grandmother's Knife-cut Noodles)

Halmoni Calguksu Rating 2 Stars: Recommended (Very Local Place! Huge bowl of noodles, excellent kimchi and sauce.) When it rains, I always see an extra long cue outside of Halmoni Calguksu in the alleys of Jongno 3-ga. It always has a line but on raining days there is an extra long line- like 25 people deep. The place is located in the alleys outside of Jongno 3-ga (Line 5) exit 6. Once you venture into the alleyways you'll find a whole new world of Korean food. The restaurant has been around from ages. The grandmother- a kind, frail woman still comes by from time to time, but it is her daughter that runs the shop now. Her daughter is a robust force of nature- a general of the army of knife-cut noodle soup. Her chefs in command make bowl after bowl of handcut noodles that are cooked in an anchovy and clam broth. As each bowl reaches completion another chef artistically garnishes it with black, roasted laver, crisp green onions, and 3 boiled slices of potatoes. This takes al...

1 Decent and 1 unusual (blueberry!) Pizza at Pizza di Pane

Pizza di Pane Rating: 1 star out of 4 (good for the money, nice service, nice atmosphere) The street perpendicular to my cooking school is slowly becoming hip. There is a chocolate cafe aptly named the "Chocolate Cafe" across from the Rice Cake Museum. The Chocolate Cafe makes...chocolate that is brown and shiny- sorta like the chocolate bunnies you would get during easter. There is also bakery that makes mediocre bread and a cafe that serves...coffee. Ok, it's not a culinary gem yet, but it's in the state of development. There is a Nescafe that has opened on the corner and a Family Mart as well. On the main street are some decent Korean restaurants such as Jongro BBQ Bossam, and several Korean raw fish restaurants. Adjacent to the main streets are where the food shines. Here you get authentic pork (garmaeggisal) restaurants and there is also a very famous knife-cut noodle shop as well. The other new addition to this street is a pizza shop named Pizza di Pane....

CLOSED District: Vintage Cafeteria in Jongno 3-ga

District: Vintage Cafeteria in Jongno 3-ga I'm always suspicious of the new big, shiny restaurants in the busy areas of Seoul. The trainwrecks are often they are the punchline of the pun: "What do you get when you combine a cafe, wine bar, Italian restaurant, beer, desserts, and waffles?" It was cold out and District was open, so I went in with my friends for a quick lunch. I was pleasantly surprised at their menu: shrimp pizza with truffle oil, chicken and broccoli cream spaghetti, and salad with fresh pineapple. Their citron ice tea has flavorful globes of frozen yuja orange- very refreshing and creative. Also, bottles of wine and alcohol aren't too expensive either (both start at 30,000). On top of that, the atmosphere is open and well decorated. Maybe restaurants are finally starting to get it: good food in a nice atmosphere at a decent price = business. Oh, just one little thing: they need to work a bit on service. Cute doesn't mean efficient. District:...

Korean Drinking Culture

Bottoms up! Korean Soju Shots I just wrote an article for Koreataste.org which has been kind enough to ask me to write for them on a regular basis. The site is one of the best sites I have seen so far for Korean food. It's new (It has only been open since August 15th), but it has a wealth of content on the site. I wish that I could make Seouleats that organized. Anyway, I'm a writer and I'm happy to write for them. Here is an excerpt of the article. Jump over to their site to read the rest. Please vote (Give a Thumbs up!) and leave a comment. It makes the site administrators (and me) very happy. When our company, O’ngo Food Communications ( www.ongofood.com ) started our night dining tours, our concept was to introduce real Korea to tourists and have them experience the culture through the cuisine. It has become our most popular tour with over 200 participants. We start our tour around the shops of working class people around Kwangjang Market. As night falls, t...

Grandmother's Knife-cut Noodles

Grandmother's Knife-cut Noodles In the back alley of Jongno 3-ga, you'll find Grandmother's Knife-cut noodles. The place has been around for 20 years and it's the most popular knife-cut noodle shop in the area- which is surprising because it looks like a dump. It looks like a shanty with seats, but maybe that's because they have been so busy for so long that they haven't had a chance to fix it up. Even though it looks like a shanty, the place is McDonald's efficient. Once you sit, your order is taken and 2 minutes later you have a piping hot bowl of noodle soup. They have only two things on the menu: Knife cut noodles or Knife Cut Noodles with dumplings (sujebi) (In the summer they have Kongguksu: Chilled Soybean Milk Noodle Soup.) Everything costs 4,000 won (about $3.50) for a humongoid bowl of noodley goodness. Kimchi is included. Name: Halmoni Calguksu Phone Number: ??? Website: ??? Directions: It's on the back streets of Jongno. If you ...

Original Garmaeggisal in Jongno 3-ga Exit 3

A story told in pictures. Awesome food at a hole in the wall joint. You can see Chef Rachel Yang and Super Foodie Robyn Lee with me. Grilled Pork tastes good. Here is a post that Roboseyo wrote on this place a while back. Dan
