Revisited: Giant Mandu Hotpot at Sadong Myeonok

Sadong Myeonok Good restaurants are places you want to go to again and again and introduce to your friends. Sadong Myeonok is exactly that type of restaurant. It's famous for their giant dumplings that they make hotpots with it with beef, noodles, and veggies in a rich broth. There is also an egg yolk that they put in an onion and you mix the yolk into the broth. The dumplings are great and so is the seafood pancake. It is so crisp that it is mouthwatering. The restaurant has been around for over 25 years and the owner said that many famous politicians including Lee Myeong-bak has been there. I can see why. The place has great food. Here is the original post I wrote on the place with contact information and directions Giant Dumplings Joseph and his Hot Pot Mandu Jeongol Yummy Dumpling Banchan Seafood Pancake Me and the owner Sadong Myeonok

Bukchon Handmade (and Fried) Dumplings

I need a break of writing so I am...writing. Anyway, this is one of the better franchises to open in Korea. I mean how many coffee shops and tteokbokki (or is it tobokki) places do we need? Bukchon Son Mandu are monsterous dumplings that are stuffed with pork, crushed tofu, and sweet potato noodles. The best part about this place is that they will deep fry them so they are crispy and fricken hot. They are the perfect thing to fight the fridgid cold these days. You can find them all over, but this location is right before Samziegil on Insadong Street. Bukchon Handmade Dumplings Bukchon Handmade (Son) Dumplings Bukchon Fried Dumplings

Namdaemun's famous King Dumplings

Namdaemun's Famous Handmade King Dumplings If you happen to be walking around Namdaemun, you might notice that many people are carrying around steaming pink boxes. These boxes are most likely from Kamae Yeanal Son Wang Mandu (가메 엣날 손 왕 만두). The name translates as Kame Old Fashioned, Handmade,  King Dumplings. With a name so long, they better be good. The good thing is that they are. Inside the little shop, you'll see scores of people working together to churn out these mandu like elf cobblers making shoes. Every time they bring out new trays of handmade pork and kimchi mandu, crowds pounce- often buying 20 or 30 at a time. What makes this place so popular is the fluffiness of the dumpling wrapper and the flavorful filling- either pork or pork with kimchi. The filling is also fluffy and delicious. They are only open from 8am to 8pm and they are best in winter. Dan                               ...

Photoblog: Eats from this week

Samgyetang from Nonhyon Samgyetang. I believe it's one of the best in the city. Here is the sign. This one is near Hakdong station exit 1(?). You walk straight and then turn left at the first corner. Turkey and Ricola Cibatta Sandwich from Retro Oven. Way too much Ricola- it was all I could taste. The bread is quite nice. It's fluffier than your normal cibatta. More cibatta. One of them has black olives. North Korean Mandoo North Korean Suyeok: a steamed pork dish. The cucumber pickles were crisp and amazing. The restaurant is called Pyeongyang Jungga and it is across from the Tombs Park in Hakdong. 02-568-1577 It's been a week in eating because of two things. I have a new food project that requires me to taste different foods and my foodie friend Matt is here as well. This is some of what I've eaten so far. Today I'm headed over to the W-hotel to do a wine pairing and this weekend I'll be going to Im Ji-ho's famous restaurant: Sandang. I promise I...

Want pie? Can't get pie?

Pie is good. We like pie. Piiiieeeee. As you’ve probably noticed, there is a lack of pie in Korea. Fear not friends, there are some alternatives. Want pumpkin pie but can’t get hold of any before tomorrow (American Thanksgiving)? Want to impress your other Expat friends at a pot-luck Thanksgiving get together? If you have a toaster oven then you can make these pumpkin pie wontons instead. To make 16 of these little treats, you’ll need: * 1 cup canned pumpkin * 2 tablespoons maple syrup (can substitute honey in a pinch) * 3 tablespoons brown sugar * 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (see recipe for pumpkin pie spice below) * 16 packaged wonton (mandu) wrappers * granulated sugar, for dusting * ground cinnamon, for dusting * cooking spray (you can use oil or butter on a paper towel, or use a pastry brush) Recipe: 1. Preheat oven to about 204 degrees C. 2. Mix pumpkin, maple syrup, brown sugar, and pumpkin pie spice. 3. Place one wonton wrapper flat on work surface. 4. Spoon 1 T...

Pheasant mandu

I've been searching for a good plate of vegetarian mandu for a while, and haven't had much luck. (Anyone have any recommendations?) So on a recent breakfast stop in Gangwondo, I was surprised to hear that the restaurant actually served chicken mandu. Uncle: Try the mandu guk. Me: No, thanks. I'll eat that kalguksu over there. Uncle: There's no pork in this mandu. It's made of chicken. Me: Chicken? *shoots incredulous look* Uncle: Ajumma! What's in the mandu? Ajumma: Kweong (꿩). Me: What's kweong? Uncle: It's chicken. Me: No, it's not. After multiple (failed) attempts to convince trick me that kweong was indeed chicken, my uncle found a picture hanging on the restaurant's wall and pointed to it. Ohhh, "kweong" = pheasant! Googled results tell me that kweong was originally used in ddeok mandu guk but these days, wild pheasant meat is used mostly on special occasion. Personally, I'm a fan of tofu and veggie mandu, which I like t...

Got Mandu? Kimchi Mandu that is.

Recently a reader asked me this: actually maybe you know of a good spot to get homemade kimchi mandoo? most places steam up and serve the frozen ones but i'm thinking of something akin to "mandoo bar" on west 32nd st in nyc... with fresh kimchi and pork... thanks for any info! So I've been thinking and to be honest, I don't know where to get good kimchi mandu. Lunalil did a story on a place with kimchi-du and I've covered a place with pork mandu, but I would like to ask you if you know a place with awesome homemade mandu. Here are the places with mandu that have been covered on Seouleats so far. Dan
