Guest Post: Top 5 Must Try Singaporean Food

Dear Seoul Eats Readers, Miss Tam Chiak was kind enough to post an article that I wrote about recommended foods for Singaporeans visiting Seoul. ( http://www.misstamchiak.com/2011/09/top-5-must-try-foods-for-singaporeans.html ). So I then asked her to recommend dishes that she would recommend for people in Korea visiting Singapore. These dishes look and sound mouthwatering. I can't wait until I make a trip there. Cheers, Daniel Gray Hello Korean readers, 안녕하세요! I am Maureen, a true blue Singaporean living in the sunny island of Asia. By day, I work as a reporter in a daily newspaper. By night, I manage my personal food blog: www.misstamchiak.com   “Tam Chiak” is actually a dialect translation for “greedy”. I love to eat, be it hawker or restaurant. One of the best things about being in Sjingapore, is the food. Our ulti-cultural diversity is reflected in the variety of local cuisine it has to offer, from Chinese to Malay, Indian to Peranakan. I am truly honored to wri...

Love Food, Will Travel: Yunnan by Daniel O'Sullivan

Yunnan Love Food Will Travel: Yunnan, China By Daniel O’Sullivan Ask anyone in China to name his or her favorite place in the country, and Yunnan, in the southwest, will invariably crop up. Even amongst those who have never been, the province enjoys a special, almost mystical reputation as a place of stunning landscapes and diversity. It's easy to see why. In the north, rugged mountains mark the outer fringes of cultural Tibet, while in the south, borders with Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar are the point where China drifts seamlessly into Southeast Asia. One thing not commonly celebrated about Yunnan however, is food. In China, neighboring Sichuan, with its reputation as the "culinary capital" usually garners the honors in that respect. Elsewhere in the region, the proximity of the hot and tangy tastes of Southeast Asia also mean that the flavors of the province usually receive little more than a footnote in the traveling gourmand's recipe book. On a recent trip thr...

Boracay Day 4: No Typhoons (Knock on Wood)

We are spending our last day day at Mandala Spa and Villas. I'm chilling in the restaurant and sending this e-mail while my friends are getting spa treatments. Last night I had a deep tissue massage and I feel tremendously better. The only problem I have is that mosquitos have been eating me alive. I've got like 5 or six bites that are itching like mad. Getting a deep tissue massage on top of mosquito bites is NOT a pleasant experience. Last night we went to a Greek Restaurant named Cyma for dinner. The appetizer was awesome. They had nice pita style bread with a variety of different dips such as tzikiki, hummous, and roasted eggplant. It was lathered in glowing olive oil. Dee-lish. We then had the lamb chops which were nice cuts and well seasoned in oregano and served with roasted potatoes with cheese. The chops were very savory and I just loved gnawing on the bones after. We also had the Greek Salad- the family style one. I recommend you get the dressing on the side, but besi...

Where the Hell is Matt...Thanks Cheryl

I needed something to get me going this morning and I found it in the form of a dancing world traveling lunatic. I had seen his previous videos, but his new one is the best and I love the music. Thanks Seoulberry for the link. And here are some outtakes. (It's not smart to dance on top of a rock wedged between 2 other rocks that hovers over a 1000 feet drop.)

Maybe Palau Maybe Boracay

It's kinda tough trying to decide which place to go. Here's my research on Boracay. Wikitravel Here's a cool blog site I found. I like this resort. It's called the Asya Boracay Resort. Oh...I should probably do some work today instead of blogging all afternoon. Dan

Hawaii on a Dime by Matt Gross

Here is my friend Matt's Story about how to travel frugally in Hawaii. THE beauty of the Hawaiian islands is hardly subtle. Jungle-smothered volcanic peaks loom around every highway switchback, verdant plants sprout flowers as brilliant and meaty as hallucinations, and surrounding you always is the Pacific Ocean, by turns coral blue, crystalline green or shimmering golden with the light of the setting sun. Hawaii is easy, Hawaii has nothing to hide. Hawaii is, touristically speaking, pornographic in its single-minded baring of its assets .

Matt Gross on the Travel Channel

http://tcpilotweek.com/trailerpage_25escapes.html Matt Gross will be on the show 25 Mind Blowing Escapes. Oh, how I wish I had cable in America. Here's the message from Matt and let's all demand that Matt Gross get his own show! From Matt Gross: Subject: If you own a television: "...you may want to turn it to the Travel Channel this Thursday at 8pm. That’s when I’m slated to appear as a ranting, raving, eye-rolling talking head on “25 Mind Blowing Escapes.” (Yes, it’s missing a hyphen, but I’m not proofreading anymore.) This could very well be my breakthrough moment on TV—or my very first moment of nationwide humiliation. Or maybe both. Either way, it should be entertaining. Watch it if you dare! (And if you like, take the survey at http://tcpilotweek.com/surveypage_25escapes.html and demand the Travel Channel give me my own show.) Cheers, -- Matt Gross

More pictures from Bali

These were taken with my camera phone, so I'm sorry about the picture quality. the last picture is of black rice pudding with icecream. It was pretty good. I wish I could have gotten a better picture, but this is of two women on a motorcycle at night. The one woman is holding a baby and nobody is wearing a helmet.

Bali

I'm sorry, I didn't tell everyone. Last week I went to Bali to get away from Korea for a couple days. It was a very restful and productive time. I did some writing and I'm back in Korea with new perspective. Sometimes you just have to get away from it all. I stayed in Candidasa, which is a city to the east, at the Candi Beach Cottage. It had two beautiful pools and it was right on the beach. It also had a running trail- it's really nice to run among the palm trees in the morning. My room was nice, although a bit dark. My TV didn't work well- not that anything was on, but when it rained it would have been nice to watch something other than the geckos gathering around the door. They had an excellent complementary breakfast. The fruit and the omelets were my favorite. The service was sublime. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. It's a place I'd definitely want to travel to again. Oh, of note, it's about 2 and a half hours from the airport. ...
