Papa Roti

Papa Roti was one of the first to bring these Malaysian(?) Style coffee buns to Korea and I feel they are the best. They are best right out of the oven. They are soft, hot, and not too sweet. I feel these are much better than Krispy Kreme Donuts or as I would like to call them heart tourniquets. The buns go for 1,800 a piece. There are some that prefer Roti-Boy, but I find that the quality lacks at time with them and they are a little bit greasier than Papa Roti. Roti-boy needs some time to mature. So...which coffee bun do you prefer? Dan

Dakdoritang: Korean Chicken Stew AKA Dak-bokkeum

Daktdoritang 닭도리탕 was the old name for this dish, but there has been a backlash against the name because it has Japanese origins. These days there is a movement to call it Dak-bokkeum 닭볶음. Regardless of the name, it is delicious and one of my favorite dishes to cook and to eat. Here is a recipe I found from www.teachenglishinasia.net. Dan Korean dakdoritang is more or less like a chicken stew... it is extremely easy to make and will amaze your tastebuds! In a heavy pot mix together: 2 tbsp of minced garlic 2 tbsp kochujang (hot pepper paste) 2 tbsp kochukaru (red pepper flakes) 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp sugar 2 tsp oil 1 tbsp fresh ginger 2 cups water Add chicken, about 8 pieces (or however much you want to make) - whatever parts you like best, this is a whole (small) chicken chopped up in bits. Chop up an onion, a large carrot, and a few potatoes, and throw them into the pot. Cover and cook on medium for about 40 minutes and enjoy! The regular recipe calls for rice, but i find there...

Chuseok in Samcheok: The Land of the Angry Virgin

The Pension or Condo in Jangho in Samcheok The evacuation route Squid on a line Beautiful Bay An old boat New Friends A Mexican Feast (sans Tortillas) Yummm... Wine with uniquely shaped shot glasses A penis shaped shot glass and uh...it's shot glass holder. Riding the giant pepper Appeasing the Angry Virgin Spirit Samcheok Over Chuseok, I was invited by my friend Krista to go to Samcheok. Samcheok is about 5 hours east of Seoul near the eastern coast. It is a town famous for caves (which we never made it to), dried squid, and a very unique park and legend. We stayed at what Koreans call a pension, which is a condo that you rent and it came furnished and had a big kitchen we could all use. There were about 12 of us and we spent the time eating, drinking, swimming in the beach, and just having a good time. For our Chuseok festival we had Mexican food. I know that sounds bizarre, but that’s what we had. Guy made red beans, Mexican rice, and we had all sorts of fixings for the burritos...

Grocery store stories: Flavored Corn Dogs

Lately I've been seeing new kinds of corn dogs popping up in the freezer section of the grocery stores I frequent. The first new type of corn dog I saw was a "Well-Dog", seen on the left. The all black coating caught my eye. Corn-dogs aren't usually black. I'm assuming this is supposed to be a "Well-being" corn dog. (Well-being is the buzzword for the health food trend in Korea.) I find it strange that corn dogs would belong in any healthy food category. A few days later I saw two more strange corn dog flavors in my grocery store. I don't think these are well-being corn dogs, but they're obviously targeting children with kid friendly flavors. Follow the link to see the new kid-friendly corn dog flavors. - Lunalil

Cooking Korean Food with Maangchi: Dak Kang Jung

Dak kang jung from Maangchi on Vimeo . I love this woman. She makes very accessible Korean food and she takes it to the masses. Here's her recipe for Dak Kang Jung: a sweet crispy chicken dish. Prepare 40 chicken wings or chunks of chicken, rinse them off in cold water and drain them. Transfer the chicken into a big bowl. Add 2 ts of salt, 1 ts of ground pepper, 2 eggs, and the mixture of ½ cup of flour and ½ cup of starch powder. Mix it by hand. Deep fry the chicken wings in vegetable oil 2 times at about 350-380 degrees (F). Sauce for coating: Prepare a big wok or pan. Place 1 cup of water in the wok and heat it up. Slice 1 cup of ginger thinly after peeling the skin off and washing, and add it into the boiling water. Add 2 TBS of soy sauce, 1 cup of brown sugar, ¼ cup of vinegar and boil it over medium heat. 5 minutes after, add 1 cup of corn syrup and keep boiling over low medium heat about 30 minutes. Raise a spoon of the sizzling sauce above the wok in th...

Broccoli may help protect lungs

Sulforapane is found in broccoli and brussel sprout A substance found in broccoli may limit the damage which leads to serious lung disease, research suggests. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often caused by smoking and kills about 30,000 UK residents a year. US scientists found that sulforapane increases the activity of the NRF2 gene in human lung cells which protects cells from damage caused by toxins. The same broccoli compound was recently found to be protective against damage to blood vessels caused by diabetes. Brassica vegetables such as broccoli have also been linked to a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. From the BBC. Go here to read more
