GO PENGUINS! Who's up for Hockey, Japanese Ramen, and Beer O'Clock

It is Wednesday, May 27th in Korea and tonight is Hockey night. Call me crazy if you will. Actually just call me Koreazy. I'm a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan and they are playing the Carolina Candy Canes tonight. If they win they could advance to the finals. It is inevitable that they will advance, but I feel that they will do it tonight. I will be at Beer O'Clock in Sinchon (the stop next to Hongdae). A map is below. I will be watching the game and running over to get Japanese Style Ramen at a cool little place near by during the break. The ramen place has many individualized booths where you can sit by yourself or with another person and the ramen comes out of a cutaway slot in the front. You order the ramen by computer before you get in and I don't think you even see the people making it. It's like magic. The game starts at 8pm and it will go on till 11ish. The ramen place is right around the corner. I can't promise that it will be delicious, but I will promise i...

Random Shots: Jongro 3-ga

Around Insadong and Jongro 3-ga you'll find a large number of senior citizens just hanging out. This is especially true of Tapgol Park. I was discussing this with Fatman Seoul and he told me there was a reason for this. Back in the day, Jongro 3-ga was the hip place for all the youngsters to hang out at. So, they've just come back home. Dan P.S. I wonder what Myeongdong will look like in 30 years then?

CLOSED: Sunshine Kebaps in Myeongdong

I was originally just going to trash this place and just write FAIL on this post, but I have decided to be kind. And so, I am going to offer Sunshine Kebaps some suggestions on how they can improve their food and get more business. 1. Think K.I.S.S. which means, Keep It Simple Stupid. You offer too many sauces and toppings. Mushrooms, sweet chili sauce, mayonnaise, crushed garlic, BBQ, Pineapple, Cheddar Cheese, etc... are all fine and good, but not on a kebap (or in this case a shwarma.) 2. Make your Shwarma quickly. You should be able to make an order from start to finish in 3 minutes. It took me almost 10 minutes to get my order. 3. The meat should be moist and flavorful. It shouldn't be dry like jerky. 4. Get proper ventilation in your store. Without the vents, each customer's clothes will smell like cooked meat. 5. Oh, your bread is quite good. It is thick and full bodied. If the shwarma thing isn't working, it might be a good idea to open up a Greek G...

A Blast from the Past: My Ode to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

It's been a long week and I have many blogs to catch up on. Last night I went to Beer O'Clock for Hamburgers . It was alright. I'll have to write that up soon. Also, I hope you like the new Seoul Eats design. I talked to many people and one comment I kept on getting was that the old design was, "too busy." I hope the new streamlined look will encourage you to keep reading. Oh, Reese's. I love them and I was inspired to write an ode to them a while back. So the following is a repost of my old Ode. My Ode to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups Oh, disk of crimped delight- a UFO to my heart. Abduct my sense of control; I want you inside me. There you all dressed all coquettish in your pleated school girl uniform. I pull the skirt down a bit to reveal your smooth finery. The first bite is like Bacchus's first sip of wine; I won't stop until I have all of you. The chocolate has a bite that gives way to the crumbly salty peanut filling that sends three taste buds...

Gyeong Ju Restaurant Recommendations

Hey all, I am doing a quick post on Gyeong Ju (or Kyung Ju) while it is fresh in my mind. These are some of the best restaurants and bars that I've found in Gyeong ju so far. All the cool kids and University students hang out in Sunggungdong. If you are trying to find it tell the taxi driver Dongdae Sagaree (동대사거리). 1. 미깡 It's the classiest Japanese style joint you'll find in the area. The food and side dishes are great and they have live octopus. 010-3537-2208 2. S Multi-cultural Creative Space. It's a wine bar that has brick igloo like enclosures for each section. The wine prices are reasonable (20-80,000) and the snacks are alright. 054-772-7979 Downtown and around the Tombs Downtown is near the touristy areas so you should definitely check it out if you are looking to go shopping or see some sights. 1. 이풍녀 구로쌈밥(Guro Ssambap) This is the most famous Ssambap restaurant in the area. They will cover your entire table with side dishes, lettuce and fresh greens. It's ...

Jeonju's Turtle ship restaurant

Do you love donkas ( 돈가스 ), ribs and steak? Do you like interestingly shaped restaurants with a Korean historical twist? If you answered 'yes' to both of these questions then a visit to  Jeonju's turtle ship restaurant is for you! Located in a city known throughout Korea for its excellent Korean cuisine (some say the best in the land), the restaurant is a very large stones throw from the main bus terminal and is adorned with a statue of the famed Korean gastronome, admiral Yi Sun Shin. Get yourself down from the big smoke and come and experience the food of the decade. If that decade was the 70's that is. The reality of the restaurant isn't too far off the sarcastic and slightly critical intro. I have never been a fan of theme bars, pubs or restaurants as I find the theme is generally to hide something lacking in the establishment. As is the case with the turtle restaurant. If you do ever intend to visit then be sure to ask any taxi driver for 'Turtle restaur...

Korea to change spelling of Instant Coffee to acknowledge Korea's Unique Food Culture

Ha! Dokdo is ours is absolutely Hilarious!!!! When I read this, I almost fell off my toilet and....opps way too much information. The guy above is Mr. Chang Tae-pyeong and he's the guy that decided to change the spelling of dukkbokki to tobokki. Yeah...I don't agree with it. I mean Korea already has problems with the romanizations of names and he wants to make it even more confusing. Well here is what Dokdo is Ours had to say in their parody In order to rebrand Korean coffee and increase recognition of this unique Korean drink, we have decided it is time to differentiate our unique five-thousand year old drink from other drinks worldwide. From now on, we will not spell it "Instant Coffee" but "Insutanteu Coppee" to show the unique Koreanness of what was once called "Instant Coffee". We think it is time to establish this unique brand of Korean coffee: it is sweeter than other countries' coffee, and convenient, because it is instant, reflecting ...

Original Garmaeggisal in Jongno 3-ga Exit 3

A story told in pictures. Awesome food at a hole in the wall joint. You can see Chef Rachel Yang and Super Foodie Robyn Lee with me. Grilled Pork tastes good. Here is a post that Roboseyo wrote on this place a while back. Dan

Eat your Kimchi's Review of Itaewon's Foreign Restaurant

OK. I'm not a big fan of the Foreign Restaurant in Itaewon. Maybe it's because I've just had some subpar experiences there. Now that my favorite Indian place, Wazwan, hasn't been serving up the deliciousness these days. So, I might have to search for a new place to get my Palak Paneer fix. Chakraa has been my place of choice these days, but I can be persuaded to eat. Dan Go here for eatyourkimchi's post on Itaewon's Foreign Restaurant

Seoul Jazz Festival 2009

Do you know this boy? He is Sungha Jung and he is a major talent on the guitar. The festival was amazing, but not really a jazz concert at all. Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, and the Frames don't really play jazz- they just play good music. The one sad thing was that this was basically an exact repeat of the same concert they gave 5 months ago. I mean the even had MATE- a Korean cover band play again. I will admit that the addition of Sungha Jung was cool, but I was hoping to hear some new music or old music. Dan Here's Sungha Jung
