Too Much Concept, Not enough Taste: Dal.komm Coffee Review

I heard that Dal.Komm Coffee was supposed to be the cafe of the future. I heard they had iPads for you to check out free of charge with your coffee, fast wifi, great music and sound. It is supposed to be the cool new place to be. However, it is just a lousy cafe hiding behind a facade of a great idea. The concept is quite confusing and the vacuous space in Hongdae is so noisy that the tunes you are supposed to be able to hear are muffled over. Also the levels of the sound from song to song are different so they must be using mp3's rather than high quality CDs or even high quality downloads. Oh, and the coffee? Blah. You can choose three levels of coffee K1: mild, K2: Rich, K3: Deep. Yeah, the gimmick was too much of a gimmick. The mild tasted like water and it wasn't "well balanced and sweet nutty" as promised. I got the coffee cube: coffee ice cubes in a latte drink. A tad too sweet and the ice doesn't melt fast enough to be enjoyed properly (they should have ma...

Invitation to Reilly's Taphouse & Restaurant in Itaewon

Life has been good to me. Last week I received an invitation from Wayne Gold. Wayne is an Itaewon Dinosaur and has been here from 1998. He is one of the owners of the Wolfhound bar and several other businesses. His most recent venture is Reilly's Taphouse & Restaurant. He is one of the owners there with several others including. One of the past Seoul Eats writers Troy Zitzelburger can often be seen tending bar and brewing beers there. I was invited along with some fellow bloggers: Joe McPherson of Zenkimchi , Zara and Elle of cute in Korea and Diane from Korea Tourism. Our host, the affable and wily Wayne Gold, corralled us with stories about the history of Itaewon and got us a very nice selections of beers. They have over 20 beers on tap including local favorites such as Magpie Porter, Geumkang Dark Ale and even some of their own: Reilly's Peninsula Dark Ale. They have beers that I haven't even seen in Korea before such as Belgium Ales and Tripels. This place treats b...

Dominic Steakhouse in Seoul

Dominic in Hannam-dong is all about steak. You order a hunk of wet-marinated steak by weight and they grill it up and then serve it in a sizzling pan, Peter Luger-style, and then you get to pick an assortment of sides like baked Mac N’ Cheese, creamed spinach, salads and more. The wine list is impressive with selections from around the world such as a Pennywise Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (50,000 won). So when I and a guest was invited to Dominic, I was happy to comply. The restaurant is off the main Itaewon drag near the Cheil Building. The facade of the restaurant is cleverly behind a wall that shields the restaurant from the cold and the noise from the road. The interior has a stylish New York Loft feel to it with very cool lights that are x-ray slides of light bulbs. To the back of the restaurant are large windows which showcase the city scape of Seoul. The service was polite. To start we ordered the bruschetta. The bread was crispy and the bruschetta was topped with caramelized onion...

Incheon Port to Seoul City Tour

The main reason why the Seoul Eats website can continue is because of the Korea Tourism Company, O'ngo Food Communications.  Here is another great tour for travelers to Korea. Especially for those coming in by ship to the Incheon Port. - Dan Incheon port is one of the most important areas for Korea because it was how Korea first interacted with the western world. Later when it was under attack from North Korea during the Korean War (1950-1953), it was a start of the standoff for liberation. 60-some years later, Korea has developed into an industrial power while North Korea flounders.  Our Incheon Port to Seoul City Tour is a tour that will show you a mix of the old and the new. Our English-speaking, friendly guides will pick you up at Incheon port in our comfortable vans (4-person van or 7-person van: Kia Caravan) and then take you on a journey through Korea. We'll drive you into one of the largest and densest cities in the world, Seoul.  Our tours are customizable and focus on...

Historically Korean territory, the citizens of Jeju have traditionally had a distinct dialect, along with thousands of folk tales and plenty of maritime traditions. A couple elements worth noting are the  hae-nyeo (literally 'sea women'), who would dive underwater for edible...

Quick and dirty list of restaurants for a weekend visit in Korea.

I have been coming to Korea since 1987, and boy has this country changed.  I am a Korean-American, who has grown up with kimchi and chopsticks my whole life.  My dad loves his native cuisine and my mom has been making home renditions of all his favorite foods since I can remember.  I have now lived in Korea for over two years and even gotten married here.  I used to visit every year up to eight times a year for work and pleasure since 1997 and developed a real taste for Korean food and even gotten to know new cuisines. This is what I would do if I was visiting over a weekend and my recommended list of restaurants in Seoul: 1.  Jja-jang myun.  This is the Korean-Chinese food.  Like every culture their own Chinese food has a different flair and Korea is no different.  This pan-fried black bean sauce with bits of seafood or other protein is an instant craving.  They do this noodle dish best in Korea.  Every hotel will have this at their Chinese menu and it should be a good rendition sin...
