The last couple of years I have been working in a more visual medium. Looking back, I used to just point, click and post. Chocolate Cake and coffee break @hollyscoffeekr Cake was legit and had surprising little chocolate-covered cereal pops in the chocolate cream. Dark chocolate pieces were hard which contrasted the soft cake, cream and more. It had enough caffeine that I didn't really need the coffee. Delicious. The atmosphere was great as well for a 24 hour coffee shop. Why do we need offices these days? There was enough power ports and strong WiFi to carry you through the day. My general rule is if it looks old then it must be good. Anyang Gamjatang is a perfect example. They serve Biji pork spine and potato stew. This version has some tofu...trash. Relax. It's the ground up soybeans after making tofu. It adds a creamy thickness to the pork broth. Really delicious. Malatang has gone from Daerim's Chinatown to mainstream Korea. This is quite interesting since Sichuan food has tried before and failed. This time it seems it might stay. The restaurants are hip places for drinking. You can go there for lunch but it's best to sweat it out at night. This place in Itaewon is getting some well deserved fame because their food is tasty and made to order. Their fried shrimp with honey sauce was cracklingly delicious.   On my night walk with friends I visited anapji pond and the cheomseomdae observatory. I took some long exposure shots with an ND filter to capture the glow and water's reflection. Tiramisu in a cup and Fat Macaroons #뚱카롱 are all the rage in Ikseon-dong. It's interesting to see how Korea's sweet tooth has developed. Macaroons have been popular for a while but the fat & crazy flavored ones is now an example of k-food (a Korean twist on cuisine). Other popular things have been dirty coffee and falling cheese (like raclettes). In Jeonju Beef jeon: an egg dipped and shallow-fried fritter is the new hit thing. The younger generation seems to have developed an appetite for sweet and super savory. The other interesting developments is how the designs of the stores are more vintage. Mangwon Tiramisu is a great example since their logo looks like the old new village movement logo. Metal framed doors, dark wood paneled walls, windows with vinyl lettering are popular these days. Finally a great craft brewery in Jeonju. The owner/brewmaster is making some amazing beers using old recipes mixed with some new ingredients and experiments. It's s new place so the brewer is getting used to the region and the clientele. I think this is one of the magical things about craft breweries: they adapt, change and evolve to their locals.  John and his wife's brewery/restaurant has a modern yet rustic feel. They are avid campers so it has a natural, forest vibe. Right now they have 8 beers on tap. The faves were the American Wheat, IPA, and an Amber. They have great looking pizzas as well have serve homemade popcorn as beer snacks. Being a father means that I have to be a chef/nutritionist/entertainer. Of course I would love to feed them all veggies and healthy stuff but sometimes you just have to get fuel into the tank. The Yakut yogurt is a staple...sigh. I have made my own organic yogurt drinks for the kids but it went to waste. The macaroons are for color and the grilled cheese is cut kid size. The cheese is organic so I guess that is ok. At least they ate it all and later I snuck veggies into their rice and soup. I know. It looks like a red hot mess but if you are in Korea you have to get kimchi and pork belly bbq. Kimchi cooked in pork fat and pork cooked with kimchi is an amazing combination kinda like salted caramel ice cream. It doesn't sound like it will work but it does. My favorite ones are in the hapjeong area on the north west part of Seoul. Get the pork belly and the jowl. I love the curry powder to dip it into as well. After you eat all the kimchi and the pork use the bits to make a fried rice with some fish rod and roasted seaweed flakes. Amazing.
