THE CONTEST ENDS SOON SO GET YOUR COMMENT IN!
UPDATED! Contest extended till December 24th! Get your comments in now!
Seoul Eats has a new dinner giveaway contest. This one is for The Wolfhound Pub in Itaewon. As you have probably noticed, I am a big fan of the pub. Last Sunday, I went to the Wolfhound for a Seoul Eats meet up and Wayne from the Wolfhound was kind enough to reserve us a table on the busy Sunday afternoon.
The last contest for Tartine was a huge success. The final comment count was 319. Chef Garrett of Tartine was very happy and he said he is interested in running the promotion again in the future.
So the new contest is to give comments about the New Wolfhound menu. I have three 20,000 won gift certificates to give away. You can make comments about food that you liked, disliked, or suggestions for additions or subtractions. The contest is not about the quantity of comments but the quality. These comments will be used by the Wolfhound to design their new menu, so they are looking for constructive criticisms. You can comment in English or Korean.
1 winner will be chosen by me.
1 winner will be chosen by the Wolfhound.
1 winner will be chosen by a special guest judge.
The contest finishes at 6pm on Sunday, December 24th.
Here's what I think:
Honestly, their menu is a little too big and it should be paired down a bit. I think they need new fries, or...sweet potato fries. I haven't had the soups or pasta. If they could Irish-fy their Green Curry, I think it could work. BTW I love their mash potatoes, caesar salad, breakfast, and steak sandwich.
Alrighty! Start commenting. (Click on the menu to enlarge).
Directions:
The Wolfhound is near the Itaewon Subway Station. From the station walk down the street ACROSS from the Hamilton Hotel and go down the first alley on your right. We are about 20 meters down on the right on the 2nd and 3rd floors. If you are still confused call 02-749-7971.

sweet potato fries! sweet potato fries! sweet potato fries! (Imagine a nice American girl chanting this over and over.)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they could do chips and mayo. A wonderful little habit I picked up from the Netherlands.
ReplyDeleteI really like the menu at the Wolfhound, it may be a little large, but it feels representative of pub grub from the UK. It warms my heart to see Toad in the Hole on a menu in Seoul, I know of no other place in Korea that does it.
ReplyDeleteMy only wish would be for some tasty sausage rolls to be added onto the menu, maybe not exactly traditional pub grub, but they would go down a treat with a pint of beer.
The one thing I'm not sure of on the menu is why "Homemade Irish Stew" is listed twice: once as "Tender Pieces of Lamb and Root Vegetables Slowly Braised in their Own Juices, Topped with Sliced Potatoes and Finished in the Oven" and the other "Traditional Irish Broth With Tender Pieces of Lamb, Potatoes, Vegetables Stewed in Their Natural Juices and Served With Garlic Bread". Are these the same thing or two different dishes entirely. Is one of them more stewy and one more soupy? I'd love to know the answer... I've had some Wolfhound stew at Daehangno's St. Patrick's Day parade this year and it was delicious.
The menu is a tad bit long, but I would add to it in this regard, I'd like to see some different soups being offered everyday beside just the Soup of the Day. The last time I was there I had a beet soup, and it wasn't my favorite. There wasn't much seasoning to it, and the taste of beets didn't come out.
ReplyDeleteI would also add different sauces to the Chicken Wings. People like to variety when it comes to drenching delicious wings.
Also, I would love to see corned beef on the menu. What's an Irish pub without corned beef? It could be added to the sandwiches section, and have some delicious corned beef on a roll with horseradish mayo and cabbage slaw. Or just have it as a Pub Favorite.
I also think an Irish pub should have traditional Boxty. But that's just me. I love it. And it could be a Snack/Sides.
So, in general, I've enjoyed the food. I think they should cut down on the non-Irish dishes (Carbonara and the Bolognaise) and add more traditional dishes.
Cheers.
Having such a sweet tooth, I jumped straight to the dessert menu and was disappointed to see just a brownie or apple crumble. BORING! I can get that at any diner. I mean I'm not an expert at Irish desserts, but Google sure helps. Some things that popped out to me were Bailey's Chocolate Mousse Pie, Chocolate-Orange Guinness Cake, or Apple & Barley Pudding. Heck, you can even just add Baily's to your brownie and see how that even works out :D
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, along with everyone else the menu is too much for me. Too many options isn't necessarily good for the consumer it just confuses them. I genuinely believe you should get rid of as many items as possible not related to Irish food like the Thai Style Chicken Curry (even though I heard it is delicious).
There's my two cents~
I'm with paul: I don't mind a big menu, especially in a non-Korean restaurant, while in Korean restaurants a smaller menu is a sign of a better quality dish, and I'm not qualified to say much about upper-crust fine-dining anyway, in Canada as well, a middle-range place like Wolfhound tries to have a big enough menu to have something for everyone. Frankly, I'd rather see a menu that's dauntingly big than one with glaring omissions.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are the hamburger options, the irish stew, and the beef and mushroom pie. I haven't tried some of the items, but so far none have let me down.
As a guy with a milk allergy, I always want to know if the mashed potato dishes have milk in the mix -- if they do, I can't eat it, and I can't remember if I was able to special-request a dairy-free mashed potatoes.
With the burgers, I also appreciate the option to substitute the chips with a house salad... on the other hand, I don't think I've ever been asked by a waiter whether I'd like chips, mashed potatoes, or salad.
Especially now that the coffee cups are getting filled to the top, the last item on the menu I want to mention is the apple crumble, in which the crumble was powdery rather than crumbly, and totally bereft of caramelly, sticky, crispy oats, the way I love my apple crumble... can't remember clearly if the apple had individuated slices (good), or if it was all mashed into a paste (bad). Anyway, I do remember being disappointed by the apple crumble.
Finally... ever thought about adding poutine to the appetizer menu? Or maybe that's just a Canadian's pipe dream.
I don't mind the long menu either...though if they really wanted to pair it down I'd recommend dropping the 5 least ordered dishes from the 'pub favorites' section and rotating them through a 'daily specials' menu.
ReplyDelete1. I love grilled cheese. I'd love to see them add tomato as an 'add on' option. also a cup of tomato or cream of tomato soup with croutons would be great with a grilled cheese too. Also, do they let you choose the bread too? White, wheat, or rye?
2. I think they could combine the chicken strip and grilled chicken salad into one. They're basically look the same aside from the way the chicken is prepared. How about just calling it a 'garden salad with chicken' and offer the option of having the chicken grilled or cripsy. This way they can add a new salad on the menu like a Cobb Salad. Or a mixed greens with a scoop of chicken or tuna salad.
3. I'm American, but I agree with the poutine comment. LOVE it.
4. Breakfast sounds great (though I've never had it here). For selfish reasons...I'd love to see cheese grits as a breakfast side.
I forgot to mention, I love the Burgers and especially the Fish and Chips.
ReplyDeleteI've had the Beef Burger and the Bacon Ranch Burger, and they were great when I had them. The burger doesn't fall apart on you as other burgers I've had in Seoul (I won't mention any names). I've yet to try the Paddy Mac, and I wonder if the same holds true for this one.
I think that the Wolfhound's Fish and Chips are awesome. But, I only have the School of Fish, and get rid of the other. 3 fillets is the way to go, personally.
Good luck on the menu.
As a non English/Irish person, I dont even know if you should listen to me! However- I love what the other commenter suggested about a good grilled cheese and soup option (great for vegetarians), and I also agree a decent dessert is needed.
ReplyDeleteI do feel the menu is literally too big, I felt like it was bigger than the table! Hard to maneuver with crowds.
I think anyone who lives in or around Seoul knows of The Wolfhound. The atmosphere, the specials, it's a fan favorite.
ReplyDeleteThe menu is huge. But who doesn't love a wide selection of food? Especially Irish? However, some dishes seem to be a tad repetative. People aren't coming to The Wolfhound for chicken strips and caesar salads. I think most people would take a well done Shepard's Pie over those fast food options anyday.
I agree with the previous posters. Cut down on the nachos, strips, and non-irish foods. I've sampled the Irish fare and it was pretty tasty, so stick with what you do well!
Also, take advantage of the seasonal produce that Korea has to offer! When I visited last, I had the Greek Salad...and well...it didn't seem fresh. Vegetables were a little waxy. Korean markets offer produce as fresh as it gets so take advantage!
I agree with Bravo, would love to see some corned beef on the menu. Just thinking of it right now makes me hungry.
And when it comes to deserts, I understand not wanting a big or complicated selection. It doesn't sell fast and is hard to keep. Apples are the foundation for most Irish desserts, so try some homemade apple pie, or sweet potato pie. Throw in some vanilla ice cream and I'm sure you'd have a fan favorite.
And lastly, the layout of the current menu is really overwhelming and confusing to read. The premium menu, the boxed in items....I think it should be designed in a simpler fashion. Try putting stars or a logo next to the house favorites. I know I always look for them on a menu.
Excited to see some changes and am crossing my fingers for corned beef!!!
i love going to the wolfhound. I go there alot with my boyfriend for their great burgers, be it the beef or the grilled chicken. We appreciate there being a grilled rather than breaded chicken option for the burgers... it's so much healthier and just tastes better.
ReplyDeleteOn a night out with friends, i love going there too because they have reasonably priced, delicious champagne cocktails. REally, i think they should show off these delish drinks more, especially the champagne with cassis. It's not even on the drink menu, i have to special order and explain it each time. Just one wish with them... please don't stir it beforehand, leave the layers. it just looks nicer, and the drinker can stir it themselves happily.
Also, the sheppards pie is a messy, greasy, overly-cheesy disgrace. I love a good shepard's pie. Something must be done :).
I was in there last week and the cheese sticks really hit the spot as a midnight snack...
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to try the toad in the hole, but have held off for fear that they use Korean pseudo sausages or even worse, hotdogs...can anyone confirm what kind of sausages they use?
I agree the cheese sticks were pretty good. Also, I really enjoyed the Irish stew, the pieces of lamb were very tender and it was steaming hot, perfect for a cold winter's night.
ReplyDeleteI would really like to see some mac and cheese on the menu. I have been looking for a place that can do that well, and with the diversity of the menu and the taste level, I think wolfhound could make it happen.
The menu looks like a pretty standard pub menu from Ireland, well from the bigger ones anyway. The dishes which a few people have suggested removing or making more Irish are very popular in pubs in Ireland so if the Wolfehound is an Irish bar then I don't see a problem having a menu like those in Ireland.
ReplyDeleteTwo things I would like to see changed/added are good homemade chunky chips, the wedges are fine with the fish but not as good as proper chips. The second is garlic fries, they are always popular with almost all the dishes on the menu is bars back home.
