Kyochon Chicken: My Chicken Feast Comic

The blogging contest over at Koreataste.org has been heating up and there has been a lot of different types of content being shown off on the site. I discovered this the other day: a comic on Kyochon Chicken. It's very cute and I think quite spot on. Please help the contestant by writing a comment or clicking thumbs up. Comic Artist needed to globalize Korean food. Paid Job.

I just got an interesting project. Right now, a government affiliated organization is looking to make a comic illustration book that will demonstrate how to eat Korean food. The style of the comic will like Calvin and Hobbes- so it will explain how to eat Korean food in a whimsical, process-oriented manner. The audience members would be people who have never experienced eating Korean food before. For example, bibimbap. Panel 1: The main character looks at a bowl of bibimbap filled with all sorts vegetables, egg, etc. The main character says, "How do I eat this?" An middle aged female server (an ajumma) in the background looks concerned and confused. Panel 2: The main character says, "I'll eat the toppings first. Sigh...the lettuce doesn't taste good plain." The ajumma looks shocked and rushes over. Panel 3: In a whirlwind fashion, the ajumma mixes everything up, while the main character says, "What are you doing?" Panel 4: The main chara...

CLOSED: Ola! Mario Italian Restaurant in Itaewon

This restaurant has closed I was a little hesitant to go to Ola! Mario because the name suggests fake Italian. Plus the red just makes me think Super Mario Brothers. I am happy to admit that the red facade is a sham for the wonders beneath it. The interior is beautiful. It's dark but stylishly dark. It is the perfect place for a date. The service is very upscale and pleasant. The concierge, Mi-gyeong was very helpful and her English was great. I went through my usual drill through the menu to see how well they know it and all. My brave friend Kelly of Seoulstyle and I decided to break from the norm. We did dessert first and it was a brilliant way to start our meal. The desserts were luscious and precocious. I mean where else can you get Ginseng ice cream topped with candied wings. The ginseng wasn't over powering and it the worked...sorta. I mean the icecream was more a icemilk. I did enjoy the flavor. The cheesecake was a dream. I mean it was so light and fl...

Shikgaek: The Gourmet Korean TV show was a comic first

Here is some information on the Manhwa on Shikgaek. This is the comic that inspired the movie and the drama. By the way the drama will be out on DVD on November 11th! I am so excited. I was so sad when mysoju.com stopped updating the episodes. Now I'll be able to watch all of the episodes! Here is the information on the Manhwa: About the Author Hur Young-mahn Born in 1947, he is one of the most popular manhwa artists in Korea. He has had a prolific 40-year career in manhwa, and many of his works have been successfully made into movies and dramas. Brought Hot to Your Morning Newspaper Eat Away: A Guide to the Heartland of Korean Cooking is deliciously one-of-a- kind manhwa on food, a rare subject for a manhwa, by acclaimed manhwa author: Huh Young-man. The manhwa is extremely informative with the author’s two years of research on the subject which accumulated ten thousand pages of documents, and three boxes of food pictures. The comic’s main character Sung-chan is a traveling salesp...

The best cure for cold weather: Korean Sundubu

Cheongdam Sundubu is one of the institutions in Korea for a boiling hot bowl of Sundubu Chiggae. Sundubu is the soft uncurdled tofu that is boiled with red pepper paste, clams, mushrooms, and onions. It is one of my favorite stews on a frigid winter day. The stew comes boiling hot to the table and you are supposed to add a raw egg into the still boiling soup. The egg will soft boil and the creamy yolk melds with the spicy broth. What I love about Cheongdam Sundubu is that they have many different types of Sundubu on the menu. They have Curry, Ham and Cheese, Kimchi, Cow Intestine, and many other variations on this classic dish. However, I feel that their classic seafood sundubu is the best. Also the rice comes in rock bowl also. What you are supposed to do is spoon the rice out of the bowl-leaving the bits that stick to the bottoms and the sides-and then pour hot water into the bowl and cover. Then you eat the soup and rice and forget about the bowl with water. After you finish your sp...

Tina Fey Makes me laugh

30 Rock is one of my guilty pleasures. Liz Lemon is an emotional eater. She eats and eats and eats. One of my favorite episodes is season 2 episode 14 Sandwich Day. In this episode the studio gets magical sandwiches from the Teamsters and her colleagues eat hers. She throws a fit (it is an amazing scene where she threatens everyone with an Emmy and giant plastic fork). Her colleagues have to get her a new sandwich by winning a drinking contest against the Teamsters. Liz gets her sandwich, but she has to board a plane to chase down the man that she loves. She has to choose between boarding the plane and eating her sandwich. Watch the episode^^ Dan
