North Korean Cuisine at Hoya Cooks

I am having lunch at Hoya Cooks north Korean Popup restaurant. The chef is Yun Jongcheol who used to work at the famed Okryugwan which was a favorite of the Great Leader Kim Jeongil. The food here is subtle and very different from South Korean cuisine. Normally I do not like soondae but here it is like a delicious sausage. Also their duck soup is rich and perfect with rice. I would recommend you come check it out. They do their North Korean Popup restaurant on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday from 1130-10pm. http://4sq.com/Q1Gpvu

Korea's Reaction to Kim Jong-il's Death

Hmmm...a new era has passed and I wonder what that means. Six years ago when I was first going to come to Korea, I was under the impression that the country was still at war. I was warned countless times that I should always carry my "American passport and get out of the country if the North Koreans came attackin." That's what my Tennessean father told me. Being a rebel, in the December of 2004, I seriously considered coming to Korea. But then the tragic Daegu fires happened and countless videos of suitrd South Korean politicians fighting during the law making sessions aired in America. I put my plans to come here aside. After a year of working to pay off a car and student loan, the itch to travel to Korea returned. This time being overworked, stressed and unhealthy was the push I needed to pack up and head to Korea. I was a bit scared but I had gotten rid of my worldly possessions and jumped on a plane to Korea. I had little to lose. I mean I had maxed out my ...

WTF! North Korea fires Artillery on South Korea

I know...not food related, but this sounds sorta serious: This is from the BBC. 'Artillery fire' on Korea border North Korea has fired artillery shells across its western maritime border, prompting return fire from South Korea, reports say.  Some of the shells landed on a South Korean island, witnesses say. A television station said some houses on the island were on fire, and Yonhap news agency said that four South Korean soldiers had been hurt. South Korea has issued its highest non-wartime alert in response to the incident, the defence ministry said. The incident comes days after North Korea revealed it had a modern uranium enrichment plant. Earlier, the US ruled out more denuclearisation talks while Pyongyang continued to work on the facility. 'Illegal firing'  South Korean officials said several rounds of artillery landed on Yeonpyeong island, near the disputed inter-Korean maritime border to the west of the Korean Peninsula. "A North Korean ...

Photoblog: Eats from this week

Samgyetang from Nonhyon Samgyetang. I believe it's one of the best in the city. Here is the sign. This one is near Hakdong station exit 1(?). You walk straight and then turn left at the first corner. Turkey and Ricola Cibatta Sandwich from Retro Oven. Way too much Ricola- it was all I could taste. The bread is quite nice. It's fluffier than your normal cibatta. More cibatta. One of them has black olives. North Korean Mandoo North Korean Suyeok: a steamed pork dish. The cucumber pickles were crisp and amazing. The restaurant is called Pyeongyang Jungga and it is across from the Tombs Park in Hakdong. 02-568-1577 It's been a week in eating because of two things. I have a new food project that requires me to taste different foods and my foodie friend Matt is here as well. This is some of what I've eaten so far. Today I'm headed over to the W-hotel to do a wine pairing and this weekend I'll be going to Im Ji-ho's famous restaurant: Sandang. I promise I...

North Korea grants special pardon or Clinton Fanboy does whatever his idol tells him to do

Kim Jeong-il just wants to be loved and the very act of Bill Clinton coming all the way to North Korea was probably enough to obtain the special pardon. Bill is probably getting all the nuclear arms- but they can't announce that yet because they wouldn't want the Great leader to lose face. SEOUL, South Korea – Former President Bill Clinton brought two freed U.S. journalists out of North Korea early Wednesday following rare talks with reclusive leader Kim Jong Il, who pardoned the women sentenced to hard labor for entering the country illegally. Euna Lee and Laura Ling were heading back to the U.S. with Clinton, his spokesman Matt McKenna said, less than 24 hours after the former U.S. leader landed in the North Korean capital on a private, humanitarian trip to secure their release. Pizza and Spaghetti in Pyongyang Via the Korea Report

via the korea report North Korea is making pizza and other Italian dishes in Pyongyang. I don't see any cheese and hot dog stuffed crusts yet. I wonder how North Koreans feel about pizza. Oh, and those pizzas are tiny! Here's the Korea Report Italian restaurant in Pyongyang seem to have been bypassed (these photos have been released by North Korea's news agency and featured in China's Xinhua ). It seems North Korean chefs have created fusion pizzas with some Korean ingredients, as is done in South Korea.
