Samcheong-dong Sujebi Samcheong-dong Sujebi Samcheong-dong Sujebi Revisiting a classic: Samcheong-dong Sujebi. Just a wholesome bowl of handpulled noodles in a clam broth. Simple. Wano: Kaiseki Cuisine in Samcheongdong

Wano Fresh Tofu Soup and Tapas In the fashionable district of Samcheong-dong sits Wano, a kaiseki-style Japanese restaurant. The original hanok it sits in is over 90 years old, but it was recently renovated so only the original frame remains. The owner, Shim Jung-eun, lived in Japan over 10 years so the food is authentic and fresh. There is a sense of art and precision to each dish. Kaiseki cuisine is considered to be one of the highest forms of cuisines in Japan and it should take the diner on a journey in order to showcase the fresh ingredients of the season and the skill of the chef. Some of the highlights of the multi-course meal I enjoyed had steamed giant clam over seasoned eggplant; a barbecue course with shrimp, ginko nuts, and pork; various sashimi; broiled fish filled with eggs; silky, thick soba; and the meal was finished with fruit and a surprisingly sweet egg omelet with crunchy walnuts. The handmade tofu soup that simered throughout the meal was also a nice touc...

A Day Of Sights And Food

Seoul is always full of surprises and I always see something new as I wander the city with friends. While visiting Namsan Tower I saw a Hell's Angels-like crew of Korean Police officers parked near the tower. I don't know why they were there but I don't think there was some raid or anything.  The interesting thing about the police officers are the bikes- they drive nice bikes. Most of the bikes are either Harley Davidson's or BMW bikes. That's pretty cool, right? The Popo in Seoul cruise in style. If you go over to the Samcheongdong area you'll see a big fence that has a very interesting painting of a naked Mona Lisa. Look how they have strategically placed the trees. I also love the blush on her cheeks.  The display is an advertisement for an art show at the National Museum of Art that will show naked pieces of art. Lunch was at a tteokgalbi place over in Samcheongdong. I don't remember the name of the place but it is on the corner from S...

World Mini Cafe

World Mini Cafe in Samcheongdong World Mini Cafe in Samcheongdong Cafes are a dime a dozen and most of the time the coffee is not the focal point in Korea. The cafe is the setting to have conversations with friends. Samcheongdong has many great cafes and World Mini Cafe in Samcheongdong has a wonderful interior with amazing miniatures made by the artist/barista. Here are some pictures of the pieces inside the museum. Earl Grey Chocolate Pie at Retrona Pie

Retrona Pie Classy Interior at Retrona Pie Whereas the main street of Samcheongdong has become uber commercialized and is starting to lose its soul, there is a new alley that's right behind it that has some quaint, artsy cafes. My new find is Retrona Pie which has a retro interior and an aluminum trailer on the roof with its name. It's a three story tart and pie joint and coffee shop and it's a great place to chillax for an hour or two. On my first visit there I got a green tea latte and an Earl Grey Chocolate Tart. The latte was fine- nice and fluffy. The pie...The pie was amazing. The snap was snappy- forcibly so and the two chocolate layers were nice and rich. There was a hint of earl grey tea in the dessert that was softened by the cream topping. Very nice. No complaints about the food, but I have to warn you a bit about the layout. There is no sitting on the first floor and the first step is noticeably higher than a normal step. If you are not careful, ...

Where Jesus and Buddha Hang out: Om Restaurant and Bar

Buddha, Jesus, and a Peacock at Om Restaurant Beautiful Interior at Om Restaurant I was recently invited to Om Restaurant by the owner of the restaurant K.P. Situoula. Apparently, he had been a fan of my blog and wanted to introduce this restaurant to me. He told me that he felt it had excellent Indian food in Seoul for good value. I am a huge fan of Indian Food, so I was happy to accept his invitation (and the challenge) so I headed there with a friend for dinner. His ornate restaurant is in the posh Samcheongdong area and it is right next to Jubilee Chocolatier and one of my favorite dessert places J's Cake . It is on the second floor and once you enter, you'll instantly be blown away by the interior. The lush, red color and the decorations make you feel like you are in a Harem. I know that in many of these places, I warn that the food often is secondary to the decoration, but I was here so I had to try the food. It is quite impressive though. I sat down...

Chez Simon Redux

Red Wine at Chez Simon in Seoul, Korea Friday Night, I went back to one of my favorite French Restaurants in Seoul, Chez Simon. It was a good experience. The waitstaff was nice, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the food...well, familiar. It was good, but it was the same meal that I had at my previous visit (about 2 months ago). Plus, since it was prefixed, we couldn't change it, I felt a bit disappointed. Chez Simon, was famous for having changing menus that utilized local, seasonal ingredients. There were some elements of this: fresh oysters topped with pear, peppers, and lemon and pumpkin soup whipped into a foam. The steak was just as it was before: cooked perfectly and with a minor flourish: a thin stalk of asparagus wrapped with bacon. The pasta was nice with the oyster mushrooms and roasted cloves of garlic, but...it didn't blow me away. The creme brulee, was excellent as before as well with its specks of vanilla, but it was what I had before. I wish the chef ...

Samcheongdong at Night with my New 20mm 1.7 lens!

I love my Panasonic DMC-G2 Camera. It's lighter, more compact than my Canon 500D and I love the colors that it gets. I'm still getting used to the controls, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. I find it best if I shoot in Manual Mode. Yesterday, I bought the 20mm 1.7 lense because, even though I like the option of adding my 35mm Canon F2 lens, it is hard to get fine focus because it doesn't autofocus. The 20mm lens is brighter and faster than the 35mm and works pretty well at night. Here are some of my new shots. Dan Street food in Seoul taken with Panasonic 20mm 1.7 lens Sassy Street Food Cart Gal taken with Panasonic 20mm 1.7 lens JJokki JJokki Sign. CLOSED La Taco is serving up Mexi-Korean Food

Pulled Pork Tacos at La Taco in Samcheongdong  La Taco in Samcheongdong Lauren McPhate's last review of La Taco wasn't very exemplary. Here's a quote from the review: "My taco was very tasty, although I don’t think I would call it a taco.  It was a veggie wrap.  There were onions, lettuce, veggies, cheese and sour cream wrapped in a soft flour tortilla.  Very nice, but not quite a taco." The restaurant owner, Maureen, was a tad upset and I went to talk with her to see what she was doing at the restaurant. She said that she didn't think the review was quite fair since she had many other items on the menu that she felt were much better. When I went she presented me with a brand new Mexi-Korean concept. You could get moist pulled pork stewed in Korean red chili paste or spicy chicken barbecue with sides of fresh pickles, green chives, sour cream, and tortillas. It was a fusion of Korean tastes, table manners, with Mexican flair. I was intrigued.  ...
