News: Cass Stealing Water for 37 Years

OB Brewery can't seem to get a break. In 2014 there was a rumor that the beer tastes like bleach. ( which was unfounded and was believed to have been started by a rival.  Now they are in trouble again for stealing water from the North Han river for 37 years. They reportedly owe 270억 or 270,000 usd in back fees. OB claimed that they were not liable for the fees since they built a dam for their own usage. However, it was later revealed they did not pay for the dam as claimed.  The controversy has upset individual taxpayers since their tax fees have been raised this year while big companies can get away with avoiding taxes for so long.

Preparing Meals for the Pregnant Korean Wife

My wife is entering her second trimester of her pregnancy and I have been trying to keep her well fed. We own two restaurants but she doesn't seem to enjoy the food much these days. She doesn't really like anything greasy at all and the taste of meat seems to offend her. She likes pastas, fresh fruits, salads, and bean sprouts. Kimchi, at times, will make her nauseous and so will many of the regular Korean foods she enjoys.  I have been doing quite a few late night food runs for fruit- especially strawberries. Luckily in Korea they are readily available in December and January.  I have been waiting for her to request a gourgefest of fried chicken, burgers, chips, ice cream and other goodies but...those foods are not what she (and my baby) craves. She'll ask for bibimbap or rice cake or some times spicy octopus (which she knows she can't have). I will go get her gopchang (spicy intestines) or soondae (blood sausage) and she'll take one bite and then ask for something

When you open up a new business in Korea, it is important to give gifts of rice cake with a letter of introduction to the neighbors. On August 2013, I opened up a small little pizza place in Insadong  and it somehow survived. I even made a little money with it. Then on December 31, 2014 with my saved money and some of my wife's we opened up Brew 3.15 Craft Beer and Fried Chicken House. This one has been a challenge. We had to completely redo the place because the previous tenants really let it go for 10 years. We wanted to restore to a Korean-style house but that was a challenge. We had to deal with electric and other issues, plus the previous tenants built the place out beyond what it was zoned for. The neighbors complained and fought us every step of the way because of noise, parking, zoning, trash, dust...sigh...everything they possibly could. It was like they didn't want us there. Well...it was obvious they really didn't. Anyway, at the end, we made a restaurant and we did a couple soft openings but we are now really ready to give it go. The future is now.

These days I am in the midst of starting a new restaurant, planning a vacation and working on a new secret project (details to follow). Oh, and world I am going to be a father. Wow! I don't even know what to say. I am very future focused right now. I have learned from my experiences and I known capacities. Now I need to plan for my wife and child. I now understand what it means to be a parent. It's scary yet exciting. I hope I am able to be a good provider.  Dan
