$35 bucks Worth of Groceries in Korea

Buying Groceries in Korea You can't get as much as you used to get. Oh, and at home I don't eat that well as you can probably see. There is seriously a problem in Korea. Food inflation is going up and there doesn't seem to be much that we can do about it. This is an assortment of groceries that I bought at a local supermarket in a not so prosperous part of town. If the prices at this market are high then I expect that in other parts of Korea it is much higher. The carton of eggs I got were 3,500 won. That's for 10 eggs (and 1 was cracked). That's 350 won per egg. The kiwi were 3,000 won for 5 (600 won a piece). The cucumbers were 2,000 won for 3 (666 won per cuke). The rice were 2,000 a pack; bok choy was 1,500 for 3; chilies were 2,000 for 5; and the pumpkin porridge was 3,000 for 1 portion. Sooooo... my bachelor's dinner was curry and rice with 1 cucumber and 3 chilies with samjang. (I know, it's embarrassing but when you own a cooking school and do ...

Seoul Eats Meetup: Sunday Dinner with Spaghetti and Meatballs and More

I think it is my rediscovery of the food network and slingbox, but I have been cooking up a storm. Last Sunday, I made homemade tomato sauce and meatballs at O'ngo Culinary School. 11 people came out and different people brought or cooked for the party. Tamara brought some pickled beet salad and Lisa made flourless chocolate cake with a strawberry whipped cream. Michelle made an excellent garlic bread. Other people brought more wine, dessert and bread. It was a great dinner and it felt like a Sunday dinner from back home. It was such a great time, we all vowed to do it again. Mexi-Korean! Thursday Night Dinner Party at O'ngo Culinary School

O'ngo Culinary School, Seoul Korea The new O'ngo Food studio opened last week and we enjoyed a week of classes and visitors to our new space. Last Thursday, we had a team building exercise class with a Franciscan Kindergarten in Seoul. They worked in teams and did a cooking competition. Over the weekend, we did tours and custom classes. One of the most interesting tours I did was with 9 members of the clergy from Alabama. This group was a ton of fun and boy could they drink. This Thursday, we are going to start a Thursday Night Dinner Party (August 12, 2010) at our cooking studio at 7pm. You can come at 6:30 to watch us in action preparing the meal or if you would even like to help make some dishes. The menu for Thursday is going to be a Mexi-Korean Party. The tentative menu is going to be: Red Chili Chicken Tacos (Dakgalbi Tacos) Mexican Pulled Pork Sliders Korean Melon Salsa (Chamwei Salsa) Mexi-Korean Mixed Rice (Spicy Bibimbap with Mexican accents) Watermelon...

Summer rooftop BBQ party.

Everything is better on a cool summer night, especially if it's on top a rooftop. There's something magical about the view from above, the glimmering street lights fading in and out, an elevated view... and to add to that the sweet sweet smell of ribs grilling above a hot bed of charcoal, DAMN I love summer nights. Well, last night was just that. It had the dark blue sky, perfect amount of street traffic, a live band (The Odds Against with Brigitte Benecke and Austin Kaufmann), endless drinks and of course, grilled meats. Actually, to top it off, we even had the cops come via a neighborhood complaint, mind you, we had Country Roads by John Denver playing... my personal favorite :)! Twas a lovely evening, great crowd, even dancing and stomach splitting amounts of food, can't wait for the next rooftop party!! South African Style Curry at Queen Suzanna's House

So right after attending the culinary tour and cooking class that I helped organized, I was invited by one of the participants (and friend) to enjoy some South African Style Indian Curry at her house. I had never had South African Style Indian Curry, so I was intrigued. The host, Suzanna, is of Indian decent (so she's lusciously brown) but she grew up in South Africa. Apparently, there is a large population of Indian people in South Africa and their curry is richer-quite buttery-, and heartier than their Indian counterparts. Here on the table there is cous cous; naan; a lamb, lentil, and potato curry; and a chicken curry. Here we have a lamb, lentil, and potato curry. It was richly flavored and the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender. Here is the bowl of chicken curry. Also quite excellent. But, I have to admit that the mango pickles made the meal for me. I LOVE MANGO PICKLES! They have a delicate texture like jaw-meat on yellowtail fish and the flavor is earthy yet piquant. I lov...

Hanspoon: Food Studies Club Gastronomique

Eddy Ahn: Chef extraordinaire, foodie, and friend invited myself, Joe MacPherson aka zenkimchi  and a couple other foodies to the Hanspoon opening party. You can find about more about Hanspoon at www.cyworld.com/FSCG  and on their Facebook page We started out with a few Makgeolli cocktails. This one was a Makgeolli Pina Colada. Makgeolli pairs very well with different juices and flavorings. My favorite of the evening was a Omija (5-flavor berry) Makgeolli. Here are breads made with Makgeolli yeast. I loved the presentation. Here are some Pork Kimchi Lollipops: samgyeopsal (Grilled Pork Belly) on forks topped with kimchi. It was a wonderful hors d'oeuvre to start the evening. Here is Glass Bean Jelly in rice paper wraps flavored with sesame oil and roasted seaweed. Tangpyeongchae is the regular Korean dish, but it is usually very difficult to eat because the noodles are very slippery to eat with chopsticks. Wrapping them in rice paper is a great way make this dish finger f...
