Cream Udon, Japanese-style at Togging by Irene Kim

Hi all, My name is Irene and I'm a 20 something girl in Korea and I wanted to introduce some of my favorite eats. "Tokki Jeong" is one of the hottest restaurants in Gangnam area. Their concept is ‘Home style Japanese Food’. The whole restaurant looks like modern Japanese house which is really cool. I recommend this place as for a date since the price range is from 5,000 won to 18,000 won so it’s not that expensive but you can make your girlfriend or boyfriend happy with the good atmosphere and delicious food. I went there with my girls though. The menu is quite diverse from Korokke, fried vegetables, fired meats (Sutbul Gui), Japanese style of soup to Cream Curry Udon. First, I recommend to try Korokke for an appetizer. Especially if you or your partner are sharing, you should order this. It’s very crispy inside and it is full of mashed potato. It is especially delicious with the white cream sauce but... the biggest reason why I'm telling you to get the...

Gangnam Review: Helen's Kitchen : Rice Wine Bar

Helen's Kitchen Helen’s Kitchen : Korean Cloudy Rice Wine Bar Makgeolli is called farmer’s alcohol because it is a simple alcohol made from ground rice, water and yeast (nuruk). Served chilled, this drink has a crisp taste and it is slightly carbonated so it goes well with greasy dishes such as onion or potato pancake or spicy dishes as sauteed pork in chili paste or kimchi and tofu. Makgeolli can differ from city to city and the taste can be altered by the use of different rice or by adding bean, corn, herbs, and even fruit like raspberry. Helen’s Kitchen offers a wide range of artisan makgeollis served with traditional dishes such as savory seafood and onion pancakes, tofu with kimchi, acorn jelly with chive salad, and grilled garlic octopus that are a fine match with the drink. They have seasonal makgeolli's and specials on most nights. At Helen's Kitchen you can taste a wide range of different makgeolli's. They have makgeolli's at different price points...

Rants: Gangnam effing station

Argh! Me so angry! I so angry I wants to stabs everybody!! Aaaarrrrrggggh. Ok. Korea, let's talk. I understand that you would love to usurp Vietnam for the most underground tunnels by building subways. New subway lines are good. They make the roads less congested and it's better for the environment. Let me reiterate new subway lines are good thing. But, that is not the problem, the problem is that when you build a new line that is connected to an existing station, there is no reason to renumber all the exits. When you do this you cause thousands of people to get confused and you cause everyone to get frustrated and they want to starts stabbing! Now stabbing is not good and many kids carry box cutters for school so they would kill most of the adults and then Gangnam would be in the hands of stressed out kids that study too much in order to make their tiger mommies happy. (deep breath) What I propose is that in the future you should keep the existing numbering of th...

Food Shots: Monsters under the Sea

On a walk around Gangnam, we saw these interesting fish in the tanks. The owner told me what it was but I forget. They are majestic looking. Does anyone know what they are? Have they eaten them?

Hong Yeong Jae: A Restaurant that a Bean Made

Hong Yongjae  The story goes that there was once a well-known and respected doctor that had everything going for him in life. He had a loving family, he had a successful practice, and many friends. Everything seemed to be going well, maybe too well. Like, Job that was struck down by God in order to test his faith, the same was for this doctor. This doctor, ironically, was diagnosed late with a deadly form of cancer, so advanced that not even modern medicine could cure him. Not knowing what to do, he looked to the small, simple soybean. He saw how food could be a medicine and so he focused on how natural food could nourish his body and cure him. Through a diet of naturally fermented food made from soybean- especially cheonggukjang, he was able to magically reverse the tide of cancer and return to health. In tribute to the bean that saved his life, he decided to open up Hong Yeong Jae Cheonggukjang: a Korean restaurant that focuses on natural, curative food that emp...

Wednesday Night Eats from Weeks Past: Steaming Bowl of Shellfish

Steaming Bowl of Clams Golmokgil is one of my favorite places to go in winter, but my friends Suji, Kyu, and Sean wanted to eat them in August. I'm cool with that and luckily the clams at Golmokgil are still delicious and plump in Summer. There are mussels and scallops and giant scallops and razor clams and conches and many other types of shellfish in the giant bowl. They steam at the table as you can pick out your favorite vittles and dip them in the vinegared chili sauce.  It's soooo...good.  The shellfish steam in a colander and the drippings make a rich clam broth that is later used to make noodle soup. It's one of the best meals you can get in Seoul! Highly recommend! Gol Mok Gil 70-1 Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul South Korea 02-544-8358 PS. After Dinner we checked out the band at the Grand Hyatt. Always a great time! Clam Broth Noodle Soup The Band at the Grand Hyatt View Larger Map

Indian Lunch Set at Taj in Gangnam

Taj in Gangnam Taj in Gangnam serves a good, ethnic lunch for only 10,000 won. The service and atmosphere are always nice and it's nice to have something other than kimchi and rice for lunch.  Now they probably don't want me to tell you this and they'll probably change their policy soon, but they do allow substitutions. I got a chicken curry instead of shrimp just by asking. It's a good place to go for lunch. Taj: Gangnam Wosong Bldg 2nd floor Seocho-Dong Seocho-Gu Seoul  Tel : 02)533-2693~4 / Fax : 02)533-2694 http://taj.co.kr/ Directions: No. 2 subway line : Get off at exit 5 at Gangnam station. -> Turn right second alley. -> Go straight 50m.

St. Patrick's Day Party is Coming! March 19, 2011

It's going to be at the same place as last year at Dublin Terrace in Gangnam on March 19, 2011 starting at 1pm. According to Seoulite it is going to be hosted by the Irish Association of Korea. No time for the party yet, but I think last year it opened around 5pm. It was a raucous party and lots of food and beer. My group and I got there early so the line wasn't too long. The Irish Parade is going to start at 1pm at Cheonggyecheon Place   UPDATE: It has been moved to Insadong! According to 10 Magazine it will be from 11:30-5:30. Directions are here: To get to the festival in Insadong take a subway to Anguk Station on line 3. Leave by exit six and take the first left down Insadong-gil. Review: "Her Own Main" at Seocho Acrovista

Newspapers for Menus and they have sparling wine in a beer glass Her Own Main has an interesting concept. It's a library that has an Italian Cuisine restaurant in it. Hmmmm....now that goes against what I was taught growing up. My librarian would yell whenever I tried to sneak snacks into the book stacks. Anywho, this restaurant is located at Seocho Acrovista's shopping center, where the old Sampoong Department Store was, and they serve pasta and wine and coffee and beer and... Nothing that blew me away. The menu is a tad expensive, but you're paying for the atmosphere. Free Mussels if you order wine Oh, and if you order a bottle a wine, you get free mussels in tomato sauce. This was the best part of the meal. I ordered the seafood risotto and it wasn't risotto. It's Korean short grain rice in tomato sauce. My friend got the pasta, and this was done quite well (it's pretty hard to mess up pasta.) I do have to say that the service wasn't quite up t...
