Our Food Tour Guests

Here are two of our guests Dustin and Cindy on a food tour with Marcus. They really enjoyed themselves (according to their blog post). They were in Korea to adopt their baby boy. I hope they are all doing well. Here is the post: Since we’ve been through this before, Dustin and I knew that after meeting our child for the first time it would be nearly impossible to concentrate on anything.  Yesterday I just kept replaying our time with Malia in my head.  I looked at our photos about 1000 times.  Luckily, we had made plans ahead of time for last night.  So, after some shopping in the afternoon we went to find our guide for the food tour we had prearranged.  We went through a company called O’ngo Food Communications ( www.ongofood.com ).  Our guide’s name was Marcus.  We began the tour at 5 and got back to our hotel around 10.  It was absolutely phenomenal.  We learned more about Korean food culture and just Korean culture in general last ni...

36 Hours in Seoul: Food LSG Sky Chef's Culinary Tour

I was asked by KTO to write a few articles on the topic of Korean food for their website, Koreataste.org . Here is my latest on the culinary tour for the LSG Sky Chefs. I was lucky enough to be invited to the culinary tour for the  LSG Sky Chefs . These chefs were to getting a 36 hour crash course on Korean cuisine by attending cooking classes and then travel to a fish market, a kimchi factory, a soy bean farm, and to do a restaurant tour. These chefs manage the food for most of the major Airlines such as: Lufthansa, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Asiana Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Korean Air, and Aeroflot. The company manages about 30% of the worldwide airline catering market. This is a true boon for Korean food since these chefs handle the meals of millions of people flying around the world. 15 chefs from the company that handle different aspects of Korean food such as menu planning, frozen foods, localization, and product...

Korean Cooking in Australia

The reason that Jia and I decided to start a culinary school and a culinary tourism company was that we wanted to share Korean food and culture with others so they would in turn share what they learned from others. One of our students at our school, Kim Forge was one of our earliest students and she took all of our cooking classes and tour offerings. This multitalented teacher is a professional curler and a cooking instructor in Australia. She recently sent pictures of her teaching her Australian High School students how to make Korean seafood pancake and turnip salad. It looks like they had a great time. Kim thank you so much for sharing Korean food with others. Here is what Kim said: Hi Daniel, It’s  Kim  Forge from Australia emailing (I am using my work email this time). I want to thank you for sending me more resources on Korean cooking for my Food Studies students. I have meant to email you for some time, but have left it until now. My year 10 students loved making t...

Couples Faceoff in our Intermediate BBQ Cooking Class!

My buddy Susanna and her lover, Sugan, are a wonderful couple- except for one thing: they are ultra competitive. So competitive in fact, that when they signed up for our Intermediate BBQ cooking class, I was a bit worried. I didn't know if this class might get a bit too heated (pun intended).  They were perfect students during the lesson part of the class, but when it came time to cook, they were very focused, words were exchanged, and there were a few elbows thrown.  In the end, they made an array of well presented side-dishes and bbq meat dishes. They had asked me who won the competition. I told them it was a tie. They wouldn't take that as an answer, so I was asked to critic honestly.  You'll have to ask Susanna and Sugan what I said. If you are interested in signing up for Korean cooking classes, contact us at www.ongofood.com or e-mail at ongofood at ongofood dot com Cheers, Dan

I am Such a lucky boy. Salmon Salad for Lunch

Salmon Salad So...you might have noticed that I haven't been eating outside as often these days. It is partly because I have been busy with work, but mainly it is because Chef Hyejin cooks a delicious lunch for us everyday. Yesterday I had a salmon salad with balsamic dressing, doenjang stew, daktoritang, and soy sauce pickles. Everything was absolutely delicious and much better than what I could get at many restaurants. (Maybe we should open up a restaurant.) Here are some shots of the food. Cheers, Dan Daktoritang Soybean Pickles

O'ngo Food Rated Number #1 by Tripadvisor

O'ngo Fish Market Tours O'ngo Culinary School O'ngo Night Dining Tours About 1 year ago today, Jia Choi and I decided to start to do cooking classes and food tours in Seoul. It seemed to be the natural trajectory in the line of work that we were doing. Jia is a professor of food culture and I was a food writer. When we started we had no idea of what we were doing and where it would go, but we believed in the cuisine of Korea and that it would be a draw for tourists. One year later, we are still around and we are doing well. We moved from renting out small cooking studios, to changing our office into one and finally moving into O'ngo Culinary School in Insadong. We are amazed that so many people have come to us to learn about Korean culture and cuisine. Many people have been writing reviews about our classes and tours on Tripadvisor.   To date there are 22 reviews and almost all of them are positive (Yay!). If you have been to a cooking class or tour, pleas...

Korean Professional Cooking Class at O'ngo

For those looking to learn the finer points of Korean cuisine, O'ngo Food has started Professional level cooking classes taught by the extraordinary Professor Jia Choi. Professor Choi has a PhD in food and nutrition and specializes in Korean food history, table setting, and cooking. She worked as a food stylist for many years before she started O'ngo Food Communications. I truly feel blessed to work with such a professional person. Jia is fluent in three languages: Korean, Japanese, and English so she has taught people from all over the world. Here she is with 4 chefs from Japan from the Fuji Mien Hotel in Japan and they are learning a range of different dishes. In this particular professional class they learned about the different sauces then they made several side-dishes, chicken and ginseng soup, braised beef ribs, and kimchi. These were the dishes they wished to make in order to introduce these flavors in their own hotels. The chefs were amazingly skilled and th...
