Koreazy Korean Pizzas with Ribs and Egg Rim

You just gotta love crazy competitiveness between the pizza companies to add more and more ostentatious toppings in order to create a sense of value for their consumers. I guess it is the only way for the big pizza shops to create higher margins (these pizzas go for 30-40 usd a pie). These calorie bombs look interesting but I am on a diet these days so I am not willing to waste a day of working out for a pizza topped with ribs, mayonnaise, different types of cheese and a steamed egg crust. I guess the way that Koreans eat though one pizza would feed 8, because of the family-style way of eating. (In my house we would order 2 giant pizzas and wings and breadsticks and soda to feed our family of 5.) Anyway, I was passing by Mr. Pizza to see their new pizza offerings. Their new pizza is the "Eggta" which is a like a egg tart in a pizza. The rim is streamed egg and below that they have lots of cheese like a Chicago deep dish and then it is topped with "real steak," potat...

Review: Trevia Pizza di Roma 3-stars

Pizza at Trevia di Roma in Gyeonidan Rating 3 Stars: Highly Recommended (Fresh and Exciting Toppings, crisp pizza, open atmosphere.) I have found my new favorite pizza place. Honestly, I had given up on pizza in Korea. I often find the crust too soft or cardboardy and the toppings blase or simply bizarre.   I think it also has to do with the fact that growing up with good pizza (Lorenzos in Philly, Joe's Pizza in NYC, etc.) makes me unwilling to put up with bad pizza. The other place up the road, Pizzarium is too doughy for me and although I like the people at Beer O'Clock, it is just delivery pizza (but it is nice they deliver beer). Trevia Pizza near Noksopyeong station offers crispy pizza on homemade dough with wonderful toppings.  The Siciliana Pizza has pala dough (hand pulled dough) which is cheeseless pizza that has capers, real sicilia olives and black olives (I wonder how they got them, cause they are expensive!) and real anchovy. This was my favorite p...

1 Decent and 1 unusual (blueberry!) Pizza at Pizza di Pane

Pizza di Pane Rating: 1 star out of 4 (good for the money, nice service, nice atmosphere) The street perpendicular to my cooking school is slowly becoming hip. There is a chocolate cafe aptly named the "Chocolate Cafe" across from the Rice Cake Museum. The Chocolate Cafe makes...chocolate that is brown and shiny- sorta like the chocolate bunnies you would get during easter. There is also bakery that makes mediocre bread and a cafe that serves...coffee. Ok, it's not a culinary gem yet, but it's in the state of development. There is a Nescafe that has opened on the corner and a Family Mart as well. On the main street are some decent Korean restaurants such as Jongro BBQ Bossam, and several Korean raw fish restaurants. Adjacent to the main streets are where the food shines. Here you get authentic pork (garmaeggisal) restaurants and there is also a very famous knife-cut noodle shop as well. The other new addition to this street is a pizza shop named Pizza di Pane....

Bate's Take: Pizza at the Crow's Nest

It’s not delivery… Written and Photographed by Jonathan Bates Pizza from the Crow's Next in Itaewon It was just another blustery and frightfully cold weeknight when I got a call from a friend to come meet him. I knew what this meant (beer and pizza) and without him even touching my rubber arm, I contently acquiesced. I had heard about some good pizza in Itaewon from a few friends about a place called The Crow’s Nest – so we said “eh, why not?” and decided to meet there. Walking up the frigid stairs to the pub, the first thing I noticed was the window in the stairwell giving the perfect glimpse into the kitchen where you could see the cooks at work. It was like the pubs rendition of the infamous Krispy Creme “tour” you could go on in the States (only you don’t get a free pizza at the end of it). Walking in, it had a very fresh feel to it. The tabletops were all painted in neon colors and the walls splashed in white and covered with various memorabilia. In my opinion, it...

Beer O'Clock: Delivery Pizza in Gyeonidan

Beer O'Clock is known as one of the best western bars in Sinchon. It is run by my buddies, Clarke and Trevor and they decided to expand into the heart of where foreigners live in Gyeonidan. What they decided to focus on here is pizza and that's all that they do. The place is small but they do a variety of different pizzas ranging from bbq chicken, Hawaiian, Meatza, Double Cheese, and the works. The pizzas are sizable and pretty good. I mean it's like dominos but at half the price and with normal toppings. You won't find shrimp tempura, potato wedges, or honey mustard on your pizza pies here. Like I said, not bad and I really like that they will let you have cheddar cheese on your pizza. (Double Cheese doesn't mean extra cheese. They mean cheddar plus mozzarella.)  Located in Gyeonidan across from the Family Mart and the Kimbap Chunguk. 02-792-0007 www.beeroclock.ca

Food Porn: Pasquale's Pizza in Florida

Pasquale's Pizza in Florida Hi Mom! Oh, and for you the rest of you. I'm just putting these up to tease you and because I seriously want a hot, dripping, greasy slice of this awesome pizza from Florida. It was at Pasquale's and it was epic. For me, a good pizza is all about crust and here they have great crust and the pizza is crisp on the bottom. Awesome stuff. Oh, and they have Ms. Pacman in the restaurant. Double Awesome. Dan Pizza should be folded to eat properly See how toasty the pie is! nice!

Pizza from Trevia

Pizza from Trevia They get points for effort, but lose points for putting pickles on pizza! I liked the pumpkin and the potatoes they put on this pie and the pesto, but chunks of pickles! I hope it was just a mistake. They make their dough there and it is the think type (which is good, not soft and doughy like Pizzarium). Dan

Gorgonzola Pizza in Hongdae at Storia by Lauren McPhate

Gorgonzola Pizza at Storia in Hongdae, Seoul, Korea Storia Hongdae Written and Photographed by Lauren McPhate On a chilly autumn night I went in search of pizza in Hongdae. After a few disappointing experiences in Hongdae the past, I was hesitant. After some wandering I stumbled upon an Italian place next to GR8 hookah bar and Ting Tings. Storia. I peeped in. It looked decent, so onward I went. It’s a very modern space with hardwood floors, funky blue water glasses and cool hanging light fixtures. The front windows peeled away to let in a breeze, and there were blankets on each chair for those who didn’t appreciate the crisp fall air. The place was pretty crowded for a Sunday at 6 and I noticed a lot of young couples. I figured this probably translated to good, cheap food. The first thing on the menu to catch my eye was the set meals. Set A was comprised of bread, drink (juices and coffees, which by the way are all free until 3pm), a choice of soup, salad, a choice of ...

Korea's Largest Pizza!

Pizza Haven near Nagwon Sangga in Seoul, South Korea The other day a pizza place opened up near our cooking studio called Pizza Haven claiming to have Korea's Largest Pizza. I said..."meh...prove it." They did and it is big...this big. Korea's Largest Pizza at Pizza Haven near Nagwon Sangga in Seoul, South Korea Not bad and they let us to half pepperoni pizza and half supreme. The pizza was not bad. The crust seemed homemade and it was crisp. The cheese wasn't overly done, and the pepperoni were flavorful. Best of all the pizza cost 25,000 and it was enough for 5 or six people without having to buy a second one. Salad Bar at Pizza Haven near Nagwon Sangga in Seoul, South Korea My one complaint is that the soda was flat. The place has a decent salad bar as well. Pizza Haven is located by Nagwon Sangga across the street from Fraiser Suites in Insadong. Pizza at Pizza Haven near Nagwon Sangga in Seoul, South Korea Dan - Posted usin...

Giant Pizza topped with Mini Pizzas

Physical Pizza Networking Theory This is a pizza that would be right out of Austin Power's if Mini-me sat on the face of Doctor Evil. It's a giant pizza topped with a variety of different pizzas: Hawaiian, vegan, meat lovers, pesto nut, etc. It's truly a work of art by John Riepenhoff. Via Gizmodo

Divino Ristobar in Hongdae

Divino Ristobar in Hongdae, Seoul Korea Recommended by my foodie friend Irene, we went to Divino Ristobar after a long week of work. We started with a bottle of pinot grigio recommended by Joe the waiter. The wine was crisp and very refreshing and good value at 49,000 won. The place is cozy. It is candlelit and the open patio lets in a bit of the nightlife on the busy Hongdae Streets. Sorrentina Pizza Special at Divino Ristobar in Hongdae, Seoul, Korea As a starter we had the Sorrentina Pizza (21,900). Crust was nice, but needed a bit of salt. This white pizza had mozzerella, prosciutto, shaved parmigiano, and rucola lettuce. I liked it, but the rucola was basically shredded on put on the pizza, so the bitter leaf was a bit tiring after a while. I like the option of having a whole leaf so I can eat it separately or together. We then had the steak special. It was cooked medium rare and topped with various greens, tomato, and dressed with red wine vinegar and olive oil. Not a...

Review: Pizzarium is Pizza al Taglio

PIZZARIUM, NOKSAPYEONG, SEOUL by Kerrie Doerr You can't visit Pizzarium without witnessing one couple taking pictures of their meal. At first glance, one might expect the isolated food photography incident to be the foodie of the pair's blogging adventure. However, a cursory internet search of the place reveals a dearth of articles about the Haebangchon hang-out, leading the investigator to a different line of reasoning. The few articles that do mention the joint are focused on two sole factors: pizza shape and lack of crust. Perhaps these two variables come across as novelty, as pizza in Korea usually comes as a circle laden with twists such as sweet potato wedges, pork donkatsu crust, and fried shrimp embedded in a cheese-filled crust. Pizzarium does have novelty in this aspect, as it shares none of these qualities. More accurately though, if normalcy is a quality that can be ascribed to a food adhering to tradition, Pizzarium is your most regular pizza around. Pizza al ...

California Pizza Kitchen in Seoul is not so bad..

for lunch. I mean I wouldn't pay their regular dinner prices for any of their items. The lunch price is 11,900 won ($10.00) and it comes with a drink, entree, bread and soup. The soup is a creme-based, flour-thickened soup. The bits of thyme were a nice herbicious touch. The sourdough bread is alright as well. it's very light and fluffy. The red onions are a nice touch. The interior is very modern and spacious. It gets jam packed during lunch time (12pm-1:30pm) Service is quick and a couple of the servers can speak English. I ordered the chicken salad and I was impressed with the micro greens that they used. They were crisp and well washed. The chicken was lightly battered and crispy. The balsamic mustard dressing was nice as well (I got it on the side). One little complaint was the copious amounts of cheese. I thought it sorta killed the healthiness of the dish. I did have a complaint about their drink policy. Their is a fruitade included in the meal, but I went there and I...
