MIST: Hong Kong Michelin Starred Ramen House

Mist at D-Cube City Seoul Mist MIST is a new ramen shop at D-Cube City near Sindorim Station. It is the first of it's kind in Seoul and it is probably the most popular shop in the entire complex. The style, the broth and the noodles is the perfect combination for a country obsessed with noodles. The broth here is like liquid gold and the pork melts on the tongue. The noodles are slick yet with a firmness that is almost elusive. This is one of the best bowls of ramen I have had outside of Japan and it even tops some of the noodle shops there. I recommend you get their regular noodles with the Shoyu sauce. I had the miso ramen as well. They are good, but the miso covers up the magical broth and you don't want to do that. They also have great gyoza with a bit of star anise on top which is a very nice touch. The noodles here are made in house, so a bowl isn't cheap. I think it started at 8,000 won and some bowls were like 12,000 won. It's well worth it and I ...

They have coffee and green tea lattes as well. The stand out teas here is their collection of pu-er teas (oxides black teas). A Day Of Sights And Food

Seoul is always full of surprises and I always see something new as I wander the city with friends. While visiting Namsan Tower I saw a Hell's Angels-like crew of Korean Police officers parked near the tower. I don't know why they were there but I don't think there was some raid or anything.  The interesting thing about the police officers are the bikes- they drive nice bikes. Most of the bikes are either Harley Davidson's or BMW bikes. That's pretty cool, right? The Popo in Seoul cruise in style. If you go over to the Samcheongdong area you'll see a big fence that has a very interesting painting of a naked Mona Lisa. Look how they have strategically placed the trees. I also love the blush on her cheeks.  The display is an advertisement for an art show at the National Museum of Art that will show naked pieces of art. Lunch was at a tteokgalbi place over in Samcheongdong. I don't remember the name of the place but it is on the corner from S...

Seoul Eats Meet-up: Gimpo Farmer's Day Food Festival Trip

Gimpo Farmer's Day Food Festival  The city of Gimpo is famous for more than just the airport. There is a thriving agricultural industry there that is famous for their rice, livestock, mushrooms, fruit, ginseng and much more. It is located on the coast so they use a lot of marine products in their food and cooking as well. The area is also famous for their milk and they produce some quality cheeses in the area. Every year, in order to celebrate the harvest, the city of Gimpo has a Farmer's Day (김포 농업 인의날). It is a day of dance, food and festivities. They'll bands there and B-boys performing (at 2pm as well. ) At the festival you can learn to make traditional Korean basket weaving, rice cake making, and try a wide range of fresh agricultural products. Arabian Food at Saffron in Myeongdong

Saffron Restaurant in Myeongdong Saffron Restaurant in Myeongdong, Seoul, Korea If you are looking for high quality Arabian food, I recommend you check out Saffron in Myeongdong (located on the first floor of the Myeongdong Ibis Hotel). The sumptuous atmosphere is matched by their high quality food. On a recent visit there I had their mixed dip that had hummus, yogurt, baba ghanoush and cucumber salad. It was very fresh and smooth. The hummus and the baba ghanoush had a rich sheen of dark green olive oil on it and the yogurt and the salad were just start enough- perfect for picking up with their fresh baked bread. Their palak paneer was great as well (I think you are probably aware by now that I love palak paneer). It had lots of spinach and good chunks of the fresh curd cheese. It was a little spicier than normal, but it didn't stop me from eating it all. The service here is top notch and the atmosphere is very luxurious. They have a wine and alcohol menu as w...

Hyejin's Double Fried Korean Chicken

Hyejin's DD Fried Chicken Hyejin DD Fried Chicken Hyejin's DD Fried Chicken I am lucky to work with a group of very talented chefs that work diligently. Chef Hyejin has been working with us for over a year and I have seen her grow as a person, chef, and teacher in that time. She has an incredible arsenal of techniques and the keen attention to detail that transform food from into an experience. One of our first students, Joseph, has been taking classes with us for one year because he is planning on opening a fried chicken restaurant in his homeland. His family owns a chicken farm there and fell in love with the way Koreans do chicken. Hyejin has developed many recipes and sauces for Joseph and we think we are nearing chicken perfection.  In the pictures you can see the different types of chicken she has come up with. We learned the best way to add crackle to the chicken is to dredge the chicken in a mix of flour and corn starch and then let it sit for at leas...

A Night Out in Hongdae is a Must-have Experience

Hong Cup  Hongdae is the hip street where art, fashion, college life, music, and angst all collide.  There are so many things that you can see. Plus there are many great eateries such as street stalls, barbecue places and bars. Above is the owner of Hong Cup which serves spicy fried chicken pieces in a chili sauce (2,000 for the small and 5,000 for the large). The cup is great because it has delicious tater tots and rice cakes all mixed in. You can even sit and enjoy a beer (2,000 won) or a Somaek (Soju and Beer 3,000 won). Dakbal House Here is another street stall specializes in collagen rice, chicken feet. It's a hit with the ladies and guys looking for something a little spicy. Bukchon Son Mandu Bukchon Son Mandu is really famous for their handmade mandu that is stuffed with Japchae noodles or meat. I recommend their fried mandu and at only 1,000 won a piece, you can't go wrong. The mandu are crispy and stuffed with meat. Besides just the eateries, there are lo...
