Deconstructing Korea: 결혼 못하는 남자, The Man who Can't get Married. Episode 1 part 1

This guy is completely OCD and totally a foodie. **Note. If you feel that this is not a Seoul Eats related post then simply ignore it. I'm a big fan of this drama and I feel it is very relevant to understand the culture to understand the food. Thanks, Dan** I can tell you one of the main reasons I really like this drama is the cinematography. There is real skill shown here in the arrangement of the shots used to tell the story. The first scene as the camera moves up from room to room and shows the different happenings in each apartment: family celebration, husband and wife fighting, old couple in love, etc- really sets the mood of how odd and peculiar Cho Jae-hee, played by actor Ji Jin-hee, is. Then I just love how you then see him meticulously tenderizes his steak with his knife. By-the-way, Cho Jae-hee's diet would be deemed extravagant compared to Korean standards. First of all, he's only eating meat- there is no rice or side dishes. Second of all, he is drinking wine b...

I love Big Bang Theory

I know it doesn't have anything to do with food, but you have to watch this show. It is completely nerdy and I love the characters. This week the episode had a new version of rock-paper-scissors called Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock.You know the sign for Spock and lizard is pretty easy to figure out (pinch together your fingers to your thumb). It's a hilarious new game and I LOVE the rules. Try playing this game with your friends^^ Dan Rules for Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock 1. Scissors cuts Paper 2. Paper covers Rock 3. Rock crushes Lizard 4. Lizard poisons Spock 5. Spock smashes Scissors 6. Scissors decapitates Lizard 7. Lizard eats Paper 8. Paper disproves Spock 9. Spock vaporizes Rock 10. Rock crushes Scissors Here are some of my favorite lines from the show. "I believe the appropriate metaphor here involves a river of excrement and a Native American water vessel without any means of propulsion." --Sheldon "You're gonna have to play outside! I'm ...

How I Met Your Mother: The Best Burger in New York TVsquad Review

I know that I'm obsessed with this episode, but I wanted to give you one more perspective. This is from TVsquad.com Dan (S04E02) "This burger is so good I want to sew my ass shut." I don't tend to open my reviews with a quote, but this one from Barney was too good to ignore. Might as well give it the Best Barneyism of the week, but it's only one of a ton of memorable lines from all the characters in this episode. Was it funny? Damn straight. Did it make me hungry? Absolutely. Did it make me afraid of Regis Philbin? Maybe a little. Even though Marshall's pursuit of the fantastic burger he tasted on his first day in New York eight years ago was more a way for him to hang on to his youth for a few moments longer -- he took a job with Barney's company's new acquisition, Goliath National Bank -- that's about the only connection to the show's continuing storyline that we got. This was more of a standalone episode, and Bays and Thomas and company real...

Burgasm: How I met your Mother Season 4 episode 2

One of my favorite shows of all time is "How I met Your Mother." This episode has Marshall and the gang searching for New York's Best Burger. Regis Philman makes a surprise cameo and he is hilarious. He plays a rage-aholic, meat feign who has been to that burger place. This show has some of the best burger lines ever. Lily: My first Burgasm. Ted: I am never brushing my teeth again, unless it's a toothbrush made from this burger. Robin: Oh, my god, I just want you inside of me. Barney: This feels so good. I'm worried I'm going to get this burger pregnant. Marshall: If he does get that burger pregnant, I have dibs on the delicious burger babies. The Marshall Burger Speech: Just a burger! Robin it is so much more than just a burger. I mean that first bite. Oh, what heaven that first bite is. The bun like a sesame freckled breast of an angel resting gently on ketchup and mustard below- flavors mingling in a seductive pudduah (?) And then a pickle. The most pla...

Exciting News: Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie is coming to Korea and

Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie is coming to Korea in October and I need your help! I am the consultant for the Korean episode and I am in the midst of planning the show. I can't be there for all 8 days. (They'll be here from October 9-16). And I am looking for foodies and interpreters to help with the show. Some of the Korean guides will appear in the show to guide the camera men through the restaurants, and different foods that Korea has to offer. There will be some traveling involved and I don't need someone for all 8 days, so if you have a day off or some time, and would like to see how a TV show is made this would be a perfect opportunity. You will be compensated for your time. It won't be much, but there will be food! Also if anyone has any recommendations for restaurants, markets, or people that you know in Gyeong Ju, Seoul, or Gwang Ju in Jeollanamdo, please let me know. We are looking for locations to shoot and for people to help guide. Ideal candidates should ...

Where the Hell is Matt...Thanks Cheryl

I needed something to get me going this morning and I found it in the form of a dancing world traveling lunatic. I had seen his previous videos, but his new one is the best and I love the music. Thanks Seoulberry for the link. And here are some outtakes. (It's not smart to dance on top of a rock wedged between 2 other rocks that hovers over a 1000 feet drop.)

My sister: the Flyer Fan's Response to my post about how the Flyers Suck

Sidney Crosby as Cindy. (Instead of Sidney...she called him Cindy AKA he's a girl.) Well...Flyers fans are not known for their wit.

Andy Barker P.I. is damn awful

Raines ain't much better. I watched exactly 59 seconds of Raines before I categorized it into my standard, smart alecky, wanna-be CSI, part of my mind. I had high hopes for Andy Richter. A talent with considerable charm, is the perfect "Yesman" and shouldn't have become the star of his own show. I mean he plays a accountant, a CPA, that is mistaken for a private detective. Accounting jokes don't jive with the funny bone. The supporting cast ain't anything to scream about- the possible star supporting character is the Middle Eastern restaurant manager. Sigh, it looks like the high point of Andy's career was when he played a children's book writer in Elf. "What about this: a tribe of asparagus children, but they're self-conscious about the way their pee smells."

TV Show round up.

These are the shows that I'm watching this year and my current ratings and comments. The Office: A- It's not as fun as last year, I think Steve Carrell's character is becoming too sappy and losing a bit of his wackiness. I think he's funnier when he's a caricature of a businessman. The Gay Witch Trials were hilarious and so was the last episode when they go to the Indian celebration and Ryan says he is saving up for, "travel and an X-Box." Battlestar Galactica: A+ It got off to an Elie Wiesel start, but I quickly got into the story. The new surprises are sucking me into the storyline and I really like the reinvigorated search for Earth storyline. I still think Baltar is a prick, but that's his job. The last episode where he thinks he is a Cylon is intriguing, but in retrospect it should have been like... duh. Starbuck is going to start flying again! That always makes me happy. Heroes : A I like it. I like it and I'm starting to like it mor...

Battlestar Galactica Season 3 Episode 4

Oh my gosh, the Pegasus becomes a kamikaze weapon to destroy the Cylon's battleship. Starbuck kills her Cylon captor and the father of her daughter in front of her daughter. New Caprica is evacuated by Adama. Sharon and Agathon's half cylon, half human baby is recovered by Lucy Lawless and Starbuck finds out her daughter is not really her daughter but someone elses. Captain Adama: "I guess you didn't understand my orders." Apollo: "I could never read your hand writing." SO...I was wrong. I thought that the series was going the wrong direction. My favorite character Starbuck was playing mother in a holding cell, Apollo gained a ton of weight, Adama had a mustache, Gaeta was the pencil pusher for Baltar and the damn Cylons were in charge! Also, Saul- whom I never really liked, lost his eye and was leading the Earth's resistance in a very irrational non-Adama way. There seemed to be no nobility, no justice, in his actions and all of this added ...

Heroes and Battlestar Galactica Rock!

So the TV season this year was starting to look blah, but I'm totally into two series that I had written off as kinda "not intriguing but enough to pass the time." I was wrong. Heroes had some awful acting quirks that took me out of the show, especially when Simone (played by Tawny Cypress) tells her heroin addicted boyfriend (heroine? wordplay for his choice of vice??? like Hiro and Hero???) "But I love you." It took me out of the show because the delivery was so fake and there was no buildup to establish there was love at all. The words were empty. The only reason I kept with the show was because of Hiro and Claire. Hiro was simply cute-in a non gay way; he kept me happily his anticipating his story. Plus his reparte with his Japanese buddy (sorry I forget his name) added a sense of Peter Parker quirky wit. Claire although she totally deep throats the popular cheerleader image that finds out she's a freak image, she is gorgeous and her acting brings...

My Name is Earl: Season 2

My favorite show from last year is back and expectations are high. The first season was nonstop hilarious and it's hillbilly wit tinged with progressive hippiness was simply irresistible for me. This season doesn't seem to have the charm of the first and is simply delving into toilet humor and sensationalism, but there are still moments where my kidneys feel like they're going to pop from laughter. Episode 1: The season starts out with Joy buying an entertainment system that is too big for her trailer. When she tries to return it the store refuses because gum has wiped off the UPC code. In retaliation she steals a supply truck and tries to hock it for the money she spent on the entertainment system only to find out that the truck she stole had a worker locked in the back. The show highlight was when Kenny tries to stop Joy from copying 100 dollar bills and screams, "I took an Oath...Copy responsibly, Copy responsibly." Episode 2: Since it's Joy's third...
