Is 6 year-old Red Ginseng Extract Really worth its weight in Gold?

Cheong Gwangjang So the other day at Jegi-dong, Gyeongdong Market, I finally decided to try the red ginseng extract to see if it was really as special as people say it is. Koreans say that red ginseng is a cure-all and it gives (men) people incredible stamina, it's good for their minds, and it will be good for their...you know: bedroom prowess. Anyway, not that I have any problems with that (and if I did, I wouldn't announce that here), so I went ahead and bought a small bottle of the 6year, "plus +" Ginseng extract which is supposed to be the highest quality ginseng extract on the market. The taxi driver I showed the bottle to after I bought it, told me that it was the same brand that he uses and he told me it was good for everything especially...my penis. He demonstrated what this would do to me with a lot of fist pumps.  He also told me that Cheonggwanjang brand was the best and that it is mainly all ginseng and not just a little bit of ginseng mixed with a lo...

Bailey's Latte at Latte King

The Latte King in the HBC is a decent cafe with friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere. It's one of my haunts after work because I often need to catch up on a bit of work before I go home. I know that once I get home, the comfortable pants come on and I just veg out to television. Of course, I should be working on that book and some other writing, but sometimes your brain needs downtime. One of my favorite drinks these days is the Bailey's Latte or the Kahula Latte at Latte King. They are a decent night cap with a bit of caffeine to keep you going to get your work done. At only 4,800 won, it's not badly priced. I mean you could easily spend that on a beer or a cocktail, but you would have to have it in a smelly, smoky bar. Got Mojito?: Best Cocktails in Sinsa at Mix Lounge

Seoul Grid has a review on the best cocktails in Sinsa. The guy who runs the blog, Richard, is a good friend of mine because I trust his instincts and his taste. According to Richard, The Mix Lounge has 16 different vodkas and "absolutely decent" mojitos. Well, with spring getting closer, a mojito sounds pretty good.  Via Seoul Grid

Seoul Menu: Yaletown, a great place for burgers and poutine in Sinchon

Here's another addition to the Restaurant Menu Series. Yaletown has a great array of bar and comfort foods. Everything is made in house by Chef Jason. It's a great place to chillax with friends over a cold pint or a shot of Russian Vodka. Drinks Menu Russian Vodka for 35,000 a bottle! Wow! Cass is only 3,000 a pint. The Yaletown Nachos are phenomenal. The Mushroom Burger is great as well.   Nightly Specials. We've got wings on Monday, Tuesday is Mexican Night-get your bottle of tequila.

Bacchus: Korea's Red Bull fuels the Rage

The stuff in Bacchus would probably scare you. I've been told it has nicotine and lot's of energy producing stuff in it. It's scary stuff, but I love it. When I was trying to quit smoking, I got my nicotine from this drink. I'm on it right now and it's 2am and I'm flying....

Fail: Tropicana Melon Milk Drink

Gross, yucky, icky, disgusting. It tastes like the water that sits on top of a container of yogurt that was then mixed with a rancid melon.

Korean Food: Max Beer

In Korea there are local brews that could be called beer. There is Hite, Cass, and OB. The expat community has renamed these beers: Shite, Ass, and BO. I guess that pretty much tells you what the expat thinks about them. I feel that Shite, Ass, and BO taste like sugary, bubbly white bread, with a hint of hangover. About a year ago, Hite started to market Max Beer and it has become the beer of choice for many expats. I've noticed around many bars that it'll sell out pretty quickly and most of the convenience stores will run out of it by 2 or 3am. The reason why is because Max has malts and hops- so it tastes pretty darn good. I mean it's my beer of choice because it's not too hard on the wallet, it doesn't give me a hangover, and it tastes alright. What do you guys think? Max is the Expat beer of choice?

Dong Dong Ju

동동주 is like makkolli which is an unfiltered rice wine. The difference between the two drinks is that Dong Dong Ju has little bit of rice that floats on top. Dong Dong means floating. Koreans say that it goes very well with kimchi pancake Dan

Thanks Brian In Jeollanamdo: Boseong Green Tea Covered in the LA Times

I am a big fan of Brian in Jeollanamdo's blog and he keeps his eyes open to all things Korea. I would like to think of him as the Dark Knight of the Chosun.   Here's Brian and the LA Times The LA Times continues its good Korea coverage as of late with a piece on Boseong green tea and the famed plantations.     The Boseong region is to green tea what the Napa Valley is to wine. There are hundreds of tiny producers in the area. Visiting the plantations, I was struck by the pungent aroma of the leaves even before I caught sight of the fields. But it was the view that took my breath away. The soft rolling rows of tea plants stretching up along the hillside stood majestically in the morning fog.     Tea plants grow like shrubs; they're cultivated to grow only waist high for easier harvesting. If left to grow in the wild, the plants mature into tall trees.     Even with the plants at a comfortable height, green tea harvesting (like any farm work) is drudgery. I watched rural wome...

Standing Coffee in Gyeongnidan

Cool little joint. The coffee's not bad and they give unlimited shots. I got an iced Americano with 3 shots and he asked me if I wanted another. How's that for service? Dan

Make Your Own Sports Drink

Via Lifehacker After I read this, I decided that I am off sports drinks. I thought that little gnomes were putting extra special stuff in these drinks to make me run faster and jump higher. If I knew it was this easy, then I would have been doing it on my own! What next? Coca Cola's secret formula is really muddy water? Read this! Make Your Own Sports Drink By Jason Fitzpatrick, 4:00 PM on Sun Mar 15 2009, 34,181 views Sports drinks are an easy way to replace fluid and electrolytes lost exercise, but what if Brawndo isn't what you crave? Ditch the dyes and high fructose corn syrup by making your own. Photo by zzeller. At the medical blog WebMD, they have a DIY formula for making a rehydration drink to administer to a person sick with the flu or other dehydrating illness. The formula is roughly the same as any sports drink however, the goal is to get fluid, glucose, and electrolytes into your system. Measure all ingredients precisely. Small variations can make the drink les...

Random Pics: 1 Last Steak before I go

This is Brian. He is currently in the Korean Army. When he had a couple days of leave, he came to visit me so I took him out to get a steak before he had to rejoin the ranks. We went to Outback because that was the only place around where I work. Next time I'll have to take him to a nicer place. Chicken Chili from Gecko's Terrace. It was quite good. Caesar Salad from Gecko's Terrace. Eh. It was alright. Pastrami Sandwich from Gecko's Terrace. The bread was good. One of these days, I'm going to have to do a sandwich review in Korea. Where are all the good sandwiches at? Darts at Geckos. I won! This was my last throw. I'm totally serious. Sara is my witness. You can ask her^^ Market O's real Brownie. You can get these at most convenience stores these days. Market O is promoting themselves as a all natural, "real" snack alternative. This box had about 5? brownies and it cost about 3,000won. They were a tad small to be real brownies, but they were mois...

Funny Anecdote: Pen-tea

In my writing class the students were supposed to brainstorm about disturbing trends in Korea and I said that Black Bean Tea was a disturbing trend. Then I went on to expound on the ghastliness of corn tea (it tastes like soggy popcorn!) and that this will lead Korea to make teas from everything: from flower teas, bundaeggi tea, water tea, book-tea, and even pen-tea. The last one was a mistake. My class exploded with laughter and I was left red faced. Dan

Gluhwien: Make Mulled Wine this Christmas

Gluhwien Tonight I'm going to be hosting a quiet New Years celebration. People would probably like to know what is on the menu. My theory on appetizers is that it should be able to be eaten with the fingers with minimal mess and disturbance of conversations. Appetizers should also have a liberally based theme. Also all of this should be done without breaking the bank. The drink that everyone is aching for is gluhwien- the warmed mulled wine. I view gluhwein as a warm Sangria and I think the best food to mix with this would be "slightly Mexican." I have been doing a recipe search for Gluhwien and one the first nugget of information I found is that it literally translate to "Glow Wine"- I think it is perfectly named. Here are the some of the recipes I found. This is from ShanghaiExpat The recipe I use is a little bit different than kilted-txn but is a tried and true recipe passed on through my family. Hmm...I cannot wait to drink this over Christmas! 3/4 cup ...

Boin Boin Breast-enlarging tea

Boin Boin breast-enlarging tea POSTED BY MARK FRAUENFELDER, SEPTEMBER 24, 2008 1:46 PM | PERMALINK Hahaha... Boin Boin is a breast-enlarging tea from Japan. From Boingboing.net

Why Tea is Healthier than Water

While nobody is running around extolling the virtues of cola as a replacement for water for daily hydration, researchers at Kings College London want to make sure you don't think every non-water drink is a poor substitute for water. After reviewing numerous studies on the benefits of drinking tea, they've concluded that tea is a superior drink. Dr Ruxton said: "Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so it's got two things going for it." Many people have lumped tea in with other caffeine containing drinks such as coffee and colas, as a dehydrating drink. Not a concern, the research team says: "Studies on caffeine have found very high doses dehydrate and everyone assumes that caffeine-containing beverages dehydrate. But even if you had a really, really strong cup of tea or coffee, which is quite hard to make, you would still have a net gain of fluid...

Top Cloud... is it worth it?

I'd been wanting to check out Top Cloud , the restaurant/bar above Jongno Tower for a while, despite the fact that a friend told me it was absurdly priced. He was right. Especially when I saw a glass of Yellow Tail Cabernet Sauvignon for 16,000 won! (That's about two bottles' worth in the US, at least one bottle's worth in Korea.) The dinner buffet spread looked quite nice (maybe next time I'll try it), but the interior was a little disappointing. The view? Take a look for yourself. Is it worth it? Jongno Tower (Jonggak Station, Line 1)... 18,000 won for a bellini... We took our sweet time sipping ; ) View of Namsan... You can see the 63 Building in the far, far distance... Interior... Night view, from the bathroom... If anyone's got any recommendations for drinks with a view in Seoul, please let me know. ^^ -Cheri
