Lunch: Great Grilled Fish by Hakdong Station

Korean Grilled Fish and Soup for Lunch at Hakdong Interior I am a simple guy. For lunch, I am happy with a well grilled fish, rice and some side dishes. I like rustic Korean style food for lunch because usually I'm hungry, the good food relieves stress, and its comforting. I mean I didn't come all the way to Korea to eat hamburgers everyday. At Bada Dunporun Saengson Gui you can get good Korean fare at a reasonable price (starting at 7,000 won). Sides are good and the grilled fish is exceptional. They get a really nice crust on the fish and it is nicely salted. Other than the fish, the other stuff is just average. The kimchi stew is not going to win any awards nor will their doenjang stew. However, you won't go hungry and the food quality is good. Especially for the Gangnam district which is notorious for skimping out on side dishes and stuff. Healthy Lunch at O'ngo Food

Z Life is good today. I actually got up early and exercised for about an hour. My body needed it and it felt good. I saw some old photos and I realized how much I let myself no. It's not good and I need to take better care of myself. Especially since I am getting married soon.  Yes, I am falling into the stereotype. Once in love many things change and it is as if your life restarts. I just wish I met my fiancé when I was in my prime. But then again, I think I was probably an egotistical bastard then. In my old age I seem to have matured a bit. I am learning to be nicer and not get so stressed. I realize it is not the end of the world. I am falling into a prioritized lull. My future and that of my love are my priority. I am not going to try and rush things for at the moment everything is comfortable and lovely. I realize that a meal doesn't need every flavor emphasized. They should just work together.  Lunch

Korean Chicken Noodle Soup with tear-inducing garlic

Samgyetang at Mu-gyo Rating 2 Stars: Recommended (Spicy Garlic! Good Chicken Broth and Samgyetang. Good Value for Money. Service could be more polite.) Samgyetang is my gloomy day food. I guess it's because when I was sick or when it was really cold, my mother would make chicken soup with Dutch egg noodles. Hit with a touch of pepper, it was one of my favorite dishes growing up. In Korea, I've had to get a substitute and my Korean equivalent is Samgyetang: Chicken and Ginseng Soup. This dish can be great or average (it's really hard to mess up this dish). Of course the best places for samgyetang have amazing broth. Mu-gyo Samgyetang in Insadong does have great broth and their chicken is quite good. For 12,000 won, it is excellent. I can't say it is the best version that I have had, but it is darn tasty. The place has 39 years of history, so they have a good formula for the dish. Of course, what really stands out at Mu-gyo is the spicy garlic. This side dish brin...

Breakfast and Lunch: cheongukjang and omurice

O'mori Cheonggukjeong This was breakfast at O'mori Kimchi Chiggae and yes, there was tofu and whole beans in the cheongukjang.  The anonymous jerk face that left this comment: "  Do you even know what you are talking about?  I have no idea what cheonggukjeong (청국정) is. 청국장 however....  The beans usually aren't whole and it is usually a paste with chunks of beans...  The soup is also traditonally made with vegetables and very rarely contains 두부."  is wrong. You know,  people might have a different recipe after all. Omurice One of my favorite foods is Omurice- Fried rice topped with a thin sheet of fried egg. It's great topped with ketchup. It's even better with some side dishes such as cucumber kimchi.

Eaten: Gyeran Mari and Seaweed Soup Lunch at O'ngo Food Communications

Gyeran Mari Here is the perfect gyeran mari that chef Hyejin made at O'ngo Culinary Schoo l for lunch. I have tried to make this before and for some reason, mine came out green (I think it was the seaweed that I put in the center before I rolled it). Making a perfect Gyeran Mari takes skill and patience. Apparently Hyejin has it and I don't. Here is a good recipe for one.

Chef Hyejin's Lunch for me

Lunch at O'ngo Culinary School Lunch at O'ngo Culinary School I feel so lucky that we have a talented chef working at our cooking school because I get to eat delicious food like this. The other day, I was in the office alone and the chefs went out for lunch. We usually all eat together but they ate by themselves. When they returned they were nice enough to make me lunch. I was just looking forward to some ramyeon, but instead I got doenjang chiggae, rice and bulgogi. Thanks Hyejin

Transcendent Cuisine Poom: Seoul

Poom Seoul's Shitake Mushroom stuffed with shrimp Originally published in the December 2010 issue of Seoul Magazine. Reprinted with permission Poom Seoul: Transcendent Cuisine You don’t have to reinvent the wheel- especially when you have top-notch ingredients and a perfect location. Located on Namsan mountain, Poom overlooks the majesty of Seoul from the center. The journey to the restaurant makes you adequately aware of what season it is and sets the mood for the meal. You have to walk down to enter the restaurant- ironic as it is on a mountain. It opens into a minimalistic space full of light from the large bay windows. The style of Poom is evident. Rustic pottery and bronze chopsticks and spoons juxtaposed with western-style tables draped with white tablecloth. Even the barley tea was served in glass wine glasses. You don’t order your meal when you get to Poom, because you have to make the reservation with your order 1 day in advance. I had decided to order the reg...

Overpriced Korean Food, Small Servings, but Thanks for the Corn

Corn, Sweet Potato, and Edamane at Bulgogi Brothers Restaurant in Seoul Bulgogi Brothers is a franchise Korean restaurant. It seems almost like a westerner decided to make a Korean restaurant "foreigner friendly." It's not awful, it's fine and I think it would work overseas. I could see Bulgogi Brothers do for Korean food what P.F. Chang did for Chinese-franchise it. There is just one problem: they are in Korea. The food is alright, but not totally authentic and it seems a bit overpriced for what you get. The banchan (side-dishes) lack freshness and punch. The styling is quite nice though and I would take some of my "not-so-adventurous" guests there. The bulgogi is pretty good though, but not as good as Sariwon or Woo Lae Oak. Also, on top of that, the prices are marked up 20% from regular Korean food prices. A Cheongukjang (a rich, fermented soybean stew) was 8,000 won and I believe the bibimbap was as well. The problem was not with the prices, but t...

What about Fried Fish Cutlet for Lunch Today? It's pretty good and I love the flaky fish in the panko batter. Comes with rice, shredded cabbage, soup and side dishes. You can dip it in the tartar sauce, but I prefer the Pork Cutlet Sauce. Yum. Sangson-kas

These delicate noodles are usually in a light fish broth and topped with kim and green onions. You can find them anywhere and they are quite inexpensive (between 3-4,000 won). It's delicious and light- much better and healthier than ramen. Guksu from Halmoni Guksu in the Express Bus Terminal of Seoul. 3,000 won.

How about Tomatillo for Lunch Today?

I don't know about you, but sometimes I just need a taco, I mean just NEED a taco. And some chili...and some nachos. Luckily, Tomatillo has all of those things. Here is the Taco Set. Their taco shells are top notch and their toppings are fresh. The nacho chips are crispy and very light, the nacho cheese is oozy, and the meat is just right. The chili comes in this really cool bowl and when you open it. You are surprised. http://www.tomatillo.co.kr Directions Jongak Branch: Go to Jongak Subway Station. I'm hungry for some pizza

I've found that Paris Croissant is a great place to get good pizza and pasta-I know that sounds really odd because it's a french place. It's usually packed with families, couples and businessmen. This is a shot of the one in City Hall. Here is a shot of a tomato and cream sauce dish. Yummy. My favorite thing to order is the gorgonzola pizza. It's a white pizza, so no tomato sauce. You just get the great taste of a thin crispy pizza with cheese and musky gorgonzola cheese. It comes with honey for dipping- I know that sounds odd, but it's really good with the pizza. And if you want something more traditional, there is always the margarita pizza. Dan
