Opening a Restaurant in Korea Part 2: The Neighbors

So...the doors have opened and we have had customers visit Brew 3.14π . Strangely though you never know what is going to happen until you open the doors. Construction takes a while and you can't really do anything until you start. Luckily, we had a good team of people to come and do the construction. It is also quite fun and our group all participated in putting the place together. There were little mistakes that we had to fix and all, but I really liked the idea of getting my hands dirty and building something. Everyday we were working, all the neighbors would stop in and look. Most of the times they just glanced and walked away. Others would poke their heads in and ask what we were doing. The landlord was a frequent visitor because she was very curious about what was happening to her building. I don't think she expected to get tenants like us because her little first floor shop was now something very different than what she expected. I think she thought we were building a li...

Toucan Chicken Cafe Revisited

I went to Toucan last night on Gyeongnidan Street. I had been there a long time ago and I thought it was ok, but I was a bit turned odd because the chef told me that the chicken wasn't very good that day because he was sick. It didn't give me much confidence in the food and it made me worried about eating there. This time around I didn't have to worry absolutely that (or at least I hope). When we got there on the Saturday night the place was packed and we had a 15 minute wait. There isn't a hostess to wait on you or anything and you just line up and wait and the staff sits you as seats come available. There is no table service either so you have to order at the counter. They will bring the food to table at least. The food is good. The chicken is flavorful but it seems more like the sauce is poured on the chicken just before baking in the oven. I feel they could have improved the flavor by either brining it or marinating it in the sauce. The jerk sauce does taste reminis...

My Ode to Cheese: Wine Buffet at Bar Rouge at JW Marriot Hotel

Oh, Cheese, how I love to cut you. The stinker and riper the better. Oh, Cheese, how I love to pair you. Dried fruits, hard nuts, and cured meats are your perfect bedfellows (a cracker just seems so plebeian) Oh, Cheese, how I love to wine you. You are so cosmopolitan and you are fine mingling with Italians, Australians, Africans, French, and Americans. Oh, Cheese, lets stay together forever. Lets see each other at every meal and every snack time. Lets make little cheese babies and help them mature into pillars of modern society. Cheese, thank you for showing me a new world. Thank you for just being cheese. You complete me. Dan

Cafe Review: Green Station Myeongdong

This is a cute cafe that offers a range f healthy drinks and snacks made from green tea. They have coffee as well for those they would like it. The red bean latte is a ok if you like red bean and milk and the green tea is good quality. Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea, 1 Myeongdong 2(i)-ga 02-745-0705 http://m.google.com/u/m/-0ZVE5

Invitation to Reilly's Taphouse & Restaurant in Itaewon

Life has been good to me. Last week I received an invitation from Wayne Gold. Wayne is an Itaewon Dinosaur and has been here from 1998. He is one of the owners of the Wolfhound bar and several other businesses. His most recent venture is Reilly's Taphouse & Restaurant. He is one of the owners there with several others including. One of the past Seoul Eats writers Troy Zitzelburger can often be seen tending bar and brewing beers there. I was invited along with some fellow bloggers: Joe McPherson of Zenkimchi , Zara and Elle of cute in Korea and Diane from Korea Tourism. Our host, the affable and wily Wayne Gold, corralled us with stories about the history of Itaewon and got us a very nice selections of beers. They have over 20 beers on tap including local favorites such as Magpie Porter, Geumkang Dark Ale and even some of their own: Reilly's Peninsula Dark Ale. They have beers that I haven't even seen in Korea before such as Belgium Ales and Tripels. This place treats b...

Coffee and desserts at Passion 5

Passion 5 is impressive. The desserts and breads are constantly pushing the envelope. Today I went with friends to get some coffee and some desserts. The espresso was dark and robust and the mini cheesecakes were delicious morsels. The strawberry tart was lovely as well. Photoblog: Seouleats Instagram

I will admit that I was a Instagram hater at first. I had bought the hipstamatic app on my iPhone because it was so hot back then. I never understood hipstamatic but I did play around with it once or twice. These days I have been playing around with it and it seems to get quite a lot of interaction from people. It makes me want to look at my surroundings more as well. If you would like to follow me, look for Seouleats on Instagram. First picture is of "Old Town Coffee" a popular coffee drink in Malaysia. This was given to me by my guests (thanks Apxara). The beans are roasted in butter so it has a full, mellow taste. The second picture is from De Espresso Room in Haebangchon. I had a mocha cap there and it was very well made (4,000 with extra shot of espresso.) De Espresso Room 38-11 Yongsan-gu Yongsan-dong 07077744168 The third picture is from Take out Drawing. I had the Tod's Remedy tea which had a mix of ginger, orange peel, licorice and other things (7,500 won). It wa...

Bachelor Vegetable Stand's Cafe in Hongdae

I like Korean Dramas but sometimes I OD on them. The last one I watched was Bachelor Vegetable Stand and it left a bad taste in my mouth (handsome, ambitious guy ends up with the stuck up girl that was the doppelgänger daughter to the CEO of a major corporation. Well at least the fake mother of the doppelgänger daughter who killed the ambitious handsome guy's grandmother had a miscarriage and later goes crazy thinking she didn't have a miscarriage...) ??? Anyway, the drama started off well and I went to the vegetable stand that is now a cafe and it is awesome. The place is well maintained and it seems to embody the ideas that the main character had in the drama: hard work and high quality. The space is well lit and the outside patio looks like a green house. They have a basic cafe menu, but the coffee is good and they have an organic selection of teas. I had the peppermint chocolate and it came out in a Mason Jar with the lid as a thing for my tea bag. Everything seemed well th...

Patbingsu at Book Cafe in Yanghwa Road

You know what? I have come to terms with Patbingsu. It is just a milkshake with red beans and other stuff. Its actually better than a milkshake because it is not as rich and heavy. I am sitting at Book Cafe in Yanghwa Road (which is down from Hapjeong station). It's like the new developing part of Hongdae that has been like developing for many years. It's still hip and not over congested and I think I have found my new favorite cafe. The place is filled with books and people working on stuff. The space just inspires me. While they work on something meaningful, I blog. The cafe is inventive and their deserts look bombdiggity (choco banana Charlotte, real pumpkin pie, and lemon tiramisu) their Patbingsu (12,000 krw) is righteous as well. Lots of nuts, good beans that aren't too sweet, frozen milk under a layer of crushed ice, rice cake and a scoop of ice cream. The mint was a bit much (doesn't jive with the rest of the stuff for me). When it all mixed together it became ...

No-Frills Mexican Food Sans Sky-high Prices

Pros: Super reasonable prices, tasty tacos, and weekly specials. Easy transition from dinner to drinks night. (Well, it is Korea.) Cons: Cave-like decor harkens to its (probable) past as a hof and doesn’t lend much to style or theme. Seoulites might be wary of non-Korean food made outside the trendy capital, but its little brother to the west is proving itself just as ready to be food-forward. For expats and locals alike, Incheon’s Taco Cielo may as well be heaven sent. Situated in the Arts Center area of Guwol-dong, Taco Cielo opened fittingly on May 5th with a menu serving general Mexican food. Taking the elevator up and stepping into the dimly-lit restaurant, I took a breath of relief. It was nice not to see sombreros and other kitschy knick-knacks that seem to plague Mexican-themed restaurants in Korea (and worldwide, for that matter). However, black dominates the scene and some of the booths are located under isolating, cave-like arches. The place is obviously the former home of a...

Comfort Zone - Now Serving Brunch!

I had the chance to visit Comfort Zone yesterday and check out their brand new brunch menu and I must say, I was very happy to be there. I grew up eating this kind of food on the weekends and I miss it. I can only count about a handful of places that offer good American style breakfast food, and I'm glad that Comfort Zone is going to be another spot on that list. The decor shows that it's been a lounge for the past 10 years, no one is going to mistake it for a romantic brunch location, but it's cozy and friendly. Also, there is a very nice patio area that we were unfortunately unable to enjoy due to some relentless rain. But I plan to make it back there and drink a Bloody Mary out there. Comfort Zone has been a happening lounge around Hyehwa for the last 11 years, but they just started serving brunch three weeks ago. They have a nice selection. Check here for the full brunch menu. To kick off their brunch offering, they have made a coupon available through daum.net. Be su...
