Doing a Tuna Eyeball Cactus Shot

I was over at Lee Chunbok Tun a a few weeks ago and I ran into Brian and Whitney from Ansan Answers.   Brian had asked me via facebook for birthday dinner recommendations that he thought were fun and I recommended my favorite tuna place. I ended up going there with a friend and I ran into them. We all ended up having a great time. Here is a video of Whitney doing a birthday shot of tuna retina in cactus liquor. Yum... You can subscribe to my videos by clicking on the subscribe picture below. Join Seoul's Foodie Community

Dear Seoul Eats Readers, This year has been quite an adventure. The cooking school is going well and our company has many food related projects these days (whew, I might actually be able to take a salary one day). We have been promoting mainly through Facebook, Google, my blog, magazines, and other ways. I just recently discovered meetup and I think it's a great way to meet with the foodie community here in Seoul. Our space is available to be used and we would like to invite you to take advantage of our space for cooking classes, dinner parties, and events. Did I mention we have ovens? If anyone is interested in doing a small dinner party or baking party, we would be happy to help you out. Our goal for the space is to develop a community in Seoul around food. Join the Meetup Group here: http://www.meetup.com/Seoul-Eats-Dining-Group-and-Cooking-Classes/ Also, our designer Michelle Min and programmer Robert recently put the finishing touches on our website. You can check it...

My new favorite makgeolli place: ㅎ [h] in Haebangchon

ㅎ [h] Makgeolli in Haebangchon is one of the newest establishments to open in the heavily foreigner populated area. It took over Cafe Alexandria's (thank goodness...that place was ok when it started, but then food quality steadily went down.)  The interior is stylish and comfortable. There are kitschy little ornaments here and there and the lighting is warm. They have a WIIIDDDE selection of makgeolli (Korean Rice Wine). Their selection actually borders on the ridiculous. I didn't know that Korea had so many different types and regional specialities of makgeolli. They have their own unique characteristics. The food is not over-priced and it is skillfully made. I like the owners because they're sticking true to Makgeolli's origins. Makgeolli isn't a high-end drink. It was originally called farmer's alcohol (nong-ju) because farmers would drink this while working the fields. It's not terribly high in alcohol content and it's smooth- with a hint of carbo...

2S2 gathering - this Saturday - open invitation to anyone in Korea

Via Chris in South Korea If the term '2S2' is unfamiliar, it's a get-together of expats and Koreans every 2nd Saturday at 2pm started by Rob from  Roboseyo . Unlike most other 'get-together' type groups, this one starts at the same place (A Twosome Place near Anguk station - line 3, exit 1), but does something different every time. This time, Rob has given my girlfriend and I the keys to the event for this month - this Saturday, it's on. We'll get started around 11:45am - I'll meet people at the top of Sinsa station, line 3, exit 8. From there we'll walk down to the dancing place. If you want to get there on your own, the directions are below. So what are we doing? The plan is to get together around noon for an  absolute beginners swing dance lesson , taught by two English-speaking teachers with years of experience. If you've never tried swing dancing before, this will be the class to take - it assumes no previous dance experience or knowledg...

Reminder! Seoul Eats Meet-Up at Lugo Tomorrow at 12:30

Dear Seoul Eats Readers, I hope you are all eating well. The last Seoul Eats Meet-up with the 2S2 Seoul Community group went very well. We had over 30 people come out. We started with Tteok Mandu-guk (Rice Cake and Dumpling Soup) then went and had corn hotteok, and then we went to a cafe. Everyone had a good time. I wanted to let you know that I would like to do another Seoul Eats meet-up this Saturday on Janurary 23, 2010 at 12:30pm. This week it will be at Lugo Italian Restaurant in Apgujeong. Recently, I met the chef, Mark Battle and I was totally impressed with his philosophy of cooking and the cuisine that he is bringing to Seoul. The interior of Lugo has a kinetic New York feel to it and his menu doesn't have your typical, boring Italian Fare. The thing I found most impressive on his menu was his mozzarella made to order and topped with figs or topped with prosciutto and roasted peppers. Because the mozzarella is made seconds before arriving at your table, it retains...

Seoul Eats Meet-up: This Saturday at Seoul's French Village

Hey everyone, I hope you are all having a great holiday so far. For the last month, I've been holding meet-ups and they have been a great success. This weekend, I would like to try something a little more formal. So this Saturday, the meet-up will be in the Seoul's French Village: Seorae Village. We will do a tasting at VineStock Wine. There will be 5 wines to taste and we will be given a lesson by Sommelier Thomas Scheidt. Thomas was most recently the sommelier for Edward Kwon and in the past he worked at Alain Ducasse's Spoon in Hong Kong. Thomas has specialty wines that he has hand picked that you won't be able to find elsewhere in Korea. Plus, the wines are well cellar-ed, so they are kept in the optimum condition for drinking. The tasting for the 5 wines will be 25,000 per person. And we will start the tasting at 4pm. Afterwards, I would like to go to Kitchen Flo for an early dinner. From the pictures, I've seen I must say that the food looks amaz...

Last Seoul Eats Meet-up at Samarkand

I don't know why I didn't post these before. These meet-ups have been really going well and I think it's a great way to meet other foodies. Here are pictures of the last meet-up we did at Samarkand: Uzbekistani Restauran t near Dongdaemun Stadium. Good Beer. I recommend the 3 and the 6. The 9 tastes like it has vodka in it (and it is super strong). Got lamb? Miso: Korean Smile Chez Biz (fried lamb over fries) I LOVE THEIR CARROT SALAD! Samsa! Flakey pastry stuffed with lamb and onion. Golstovy: Cabbage and Pepper Stuffed with meat! Pelemeni! Lamb Mandu. I wonder what they are looking at? I'm sure it's probably delicious. Good times and good company. Asian Pose: Big Heart

Seoul Eats Meet Up again this Friday: Uzbekistani Food

Hmmmm...the last two meet-ups were a lot of fun and there were a number of great people that came out, so we are going to do it again. I think it's something I will try to do every Friday. This week, I would like to to go to Samarikand in Dongdaemun. It's a Uzbekistan restaurant in Seoul and the food is amazing. If you would like to come, send me an e-mail here . We will meet around 8pm at the restaurant. Here are the directions: After getting off at dongdaemun stadium, exit #5 and walk towards the woori bank. To the left is the A+ noraebahng, Samarakand is a few buildings before the A+ noraebahng. If you love lamb and crave something aside from kimchi, the food is good. (Thanks Paul Ajossi for the directions)

Seoul Eats Meet up this Friday at 8:30

Not so much a meeting, but a meet up for good food and good times. This Friday at 8:30pm at Yaletown in Sinchon around or after 8:30pm. It's a great bar with the best nachos (they make their own guacamole), great burgers, and lots of beer. Go out Sinchon Station exit 2 and walk down to the Beans and Berries and make a left. It's on the third floor of the next building. Give me a call if you get lost Dan --

CLOSED Seoul Eats Meet up: Le Quartier Latin

Hello everyone, This is Daniel Gray and I wanted to invite you to a dinner meet up. There is a nice new French Bistro in Sinchon called Le Quartier Latin and I was planning on heading there tonight around 7:30 for dinner. The bistro has rustic French favorites like mussels, quiches, croque monsieurs, and raclettes. The prices are very reasonable too (4,000 to 15,000). If you are interested, then respond to this message or send me an e-mail at this link to RSVP. Let's meet at Sinchon Exit 3 in front of McDonalds at 7:20. Here are the directions:     Go out Sinchon Exit 3 and walk straight until you get to the big church and make a right. Walk about about 500 meters and you'll see it on the second floor. It's marked with a big French Flag. And the phone number to the restaurant is 02-333-9874.

GO PENGUINS! Who's up for Hockey, Japanese Ramen, and Beer O'Clock

It is Wednesday, May 27th in Korea and tonight is Hockey night. Call me crazy if you will. Actually just call me Koreazy. I'm a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan and they are playing the Carolina Candy Canes tonight. If they win they could advance to the finals. It is inevitable that they will advance, but I feel that they will do it tonight. I will be at Beer O'Clock in Sinchon (the stop next to Hongdae). A map is below. I will be watching the game and running over to get Japanese Style Ramen at a cool little place near by during the break. The ramen place has many individualized booths where you can sit by yourself or with another person and the ramen comes out of a cutaway slot in the front. You order the ramen by computer before you get in and I don't think you even see the people making it. It's like magic. The game starts at 8pm and it will go on till 11ish. The ramen place is right around the corner. I can't promise that it will be delicious, but I will promise i...

Seoul Eats Meet up: Really Good Naengmyeong and Bibimguksu

Hey everyone, I am in the mood for some really good homemade Naengmyeon. If you would like to join me and a couple other readers, please e-mail me at seouleats (at) gmail (dot) com. We will meet at Eujiro 4-ga exit 8. I'll have to reschedule this... Here is a write up on the place. Bibimguksu at Ojangdong Hwung-namjip 비빔국수 at 오장동흥남집: It's all about the noodles and you can't get better or fresher noodles. As you eat, you can look into the kitchen and see the chefs making the noodles on site. One man is back stepping on the buckwheat to soften them up awhile another cuts them. There is a third person back there and I figure he must be laying on the magic because the noodles that I slurped were like gossamer threads. Eating the whole bowl was as if I was taking a breath of cool mountain air after reaching the apex. Yeah, it's a bit spicy, but that's what makes it enlightening.Go to Eujiro 4-ga exit 8 and to straight. At Chunggujeong Intersection (중구청), make a left. Go ...
