Lee Cham, President of KTO on our Night Dining Tour

Night Dining Tour O'ngo Food Communications We got a very special request for a tour last month when the president, the head, the big cheese of KTO, Lee Cham came on our night dining tour. Mr. Lee came with his entourage and joined a group of other hungry and thirsty travelers on our highly ranked Night Dining Tour.   Mr. Cham was a perfect guest and he had infinite knowledge to share with the other guests on the tour. He speaks like a person that truly loves Korea. I learned a lot about his personal story on how he came to Korea and later became a celebrity on Korean TV. Lee Cham at a Makgeolli Bar Lee Cham with Cham Soju Besides his personal life, Mr. Lee is a foodie. He loved all of the different locations that we went to and he had stories to tell about the ingredients, cooking techniques, and about his favorite chefs and restaurants. Perceptions of Korean Food: Hawaii

Written by Daniel Gray Picture from various sources. Click on the pictures to find the source Korean Food in Hawaii With all this talk about "globalizing Korean cuisine" I think that we need to give props to those that are already doing it their own way. These Korean chefs are striking out on their own and localizing the food or promoting dishes that the locals already find appealing. One of my guests called me the "Taste Whisperer" because before I start the tour I ask food related questions and try to find the taste that people are searching for. I do that or I try and pick dishes that are exciting and delicious for them. Now each guest is different and it is a kind of a game for me to try and pick dishes that will excite them. The last few months have been fun because we have been getting a number of Hawaiian visitors on our tours (I don't know who has been recommending us, but thank you!). These guests had tried Korean food- or they thought. They ev...

O'ngo Food Rated Number #1 by Tripadvisor

O'ngo Fish Market Tours O'ngo Culinary School O'ngo Night Dining Tours About 1 year ago today, Jia Choi and I decided to start to do cooking classes and food tours in Seoul. It seemed to be the natural trajectory in the line of work that we were doing. Jia is a professor of food culture and I was a food writer. When we started we had no idea of what we were doing and where it would go, but we believed in the cuisine of Korea and that it would be a draw for tourists. One year later, we are still around and we are doing well. We moved from renting out small cooking studios, to changing our office into one and finally moving into O'ngo Culinary School in Insadong. We are amazed that so many people have come to us to learn about Korean culture and cuisine. Many people have been writing reviews about our classes and tours on Tripadvisor.   To date there are 22 reviews and almost all of them are positive (Yay!). If you have been to a cooking class or tour, pleas...

Team Building Cooking Class in Seoul for Franciscan Foreign Kindergarten

During opening week of our culinary school in Insadong, the Franciscan Foreign Kindergarten of Seoul came to our place to do a team building cooking class. They first got to see a demonstration from Chef Shawn and then they got to cook their own lunch in teams. The team that made the most delicious and best presented dish won a prize. It was a very exciting day and we gave each team 45 minutes to cook and present but most teams were done in 30 minutes and they had time to clean up their areas (by-the-way, thank you^^). They were a great team of teachers that were very excited and we were happy to do this for the group. Thank you Franciscan Foreign Kindergarten! http://www.franciscanfk.com/ Chef Shawn Demonstrating how to make the dishes And they are off! Be a King and Queen at Suraon

Recently, I was invited by a group to give a lecture on Korean food. Most of the people were from out of the country and they wanted to experience real Korean food and culture. I had recommend a Royal Court Restaurant not too far from their hotel. That evening we enjoyed 14 courses of great royal court influenced cuisine, a dance and music performance, and a lecture about Korean food culture from yours truly. Dinner was a big success and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. There were a few dishes that were misses, but those were quickly forgotten by the 13 other dishes and side dishes that followed. Dinner went from formal to fun when tables started to order bottles of Soju and beer. I explained to everyone on how Koreans pour each other drinks (pour with the right hand while touching the right elbow with the left hand) and they really enjoyed the respectful attitude that Koreans have toward each other. The most surprising part of my lecture was when I told them that everything prel...

Plum Wine with Live Octopus

Last Thursday, I took a group of foodies out for a night dining tour.  They decided that they wanted to have some live octopus, so that's what we did. It was a great time and it was a lot of fun trying to watch them pick up the squirming, slippery, moving pieces of octopus. I'll be running Night Dining Tours on Wednesday-Saturday Night if you would like to join, Cheers, Dan Plum Wine Live Octopus Tempura Spicy Fish Soup
