Made: New American Bistro in Apgujeong

I went on a date with the wife to Made: a new American bistro where you can customize your meal options and get some craft beer or cocktails to go with it. The atmosphere is bright and industrial with many great lights. I like the wood accents all around. We started off with some Italian croquette balls which where quite good and had little bits of cheese in it. Good but a tad too filling. The second course were some sliders. These I enjoyed. The pork sliders had an Italian herbaceous (actually most of the food has a New York Italian flair). The beef and gravy sliders were very homey and the chicken one was alright. I liked all the sauces with the food which tasted bright, well balanced, and fresh. Their focaccia was good as well. Now I wish I could have stayed for the whole meal but I had a work meeting so I couldn't stay and try the lasagna or chicken and biscuits with gravy. Sigh. Gemma Wardle taunted me with a picture of it. Oh, well it just means I will have to go back soon.  ...

Famous Naengmyeong Place by City Hall: Nampo Myeonok

Nampo Myeonok for Naengmyeon in Seoul Nampo Myeonok for Naengmyeon in Seoul Nampo Myeonok for Naengmyeon in Seoul Nampo Myeonok for Naengmyeon in Seoul It's hot, so it is best to get some cool, chilled Naengmyeon at the classic Nampo Myeonok Restaurant by City Hall. Pictures by Jihyun Lee Seoul Eats: Nampomyeonok Contrary to popular belief, Korean “naengmyeon” is a wintertime specialty dish that originated in North Korea. I guess the idea of combating cold with cold is similar to people in India drinking blazing hot coffee to fight the heat. Although some still eat naengmyeon-which translates to “cold noodle”- in winter; these days it is more common to eat it in summer cool down from the heat Naengmyeon has become ubiquitous around Korea and the world. The standard seems to be a brown chewy noodle that's dense (and often clumps), a salty beef broth, half an egg (which you are supposed to eat first to prepare your stomach for the cold meal), turnip, ch...

Memphis King's 4-Hour Smoked BBQ Ribs: CLOSED

THIS RESTAURANT HAS CLOSED Memphis BBQ's 4-Hour Smoked Ribs in Bangbae, Seoul, Korea Recently, I was invited by Danner to enjoy some authentic, Memphis-style BBQ Ribs at his restaurant in Bangbae: MKB: Memphis King Barbecue. The idea of eating real memphis barbecue was invitation enough and I headed over there with a few friends for a meal. The atmosphere is nothing special, but it is bright and clean. We were greeted by the owner, Danner and he told us a bit about the restaurant. He said that he and his parents started the place back in July and their goal was to bring Memphis-style Pork Ribs to Koreans. These ribs are imported from Memphis Tennessee after they are smoked for 4 hours and coated in a rich bbq sauce. The ribs are humongous, meaty, and the meat was fall off the bone tender. A full rack of ribs with crispy shoestring fries and slaw is only 25,000 won! Seriously, they are enough for 3 people and with beer, it is a wonderful night out. They also have a great c...

Weekend Update: Cooking Classes, London Tea, Makgeolli, and Tokyo Modern Kitchen

This weekend was quite busy. On Friday Night, O'ngo Food Communications launched the Night Dining Tours and we had 5 people come. It was a night filled with food, fun, drinks, and fun. On Saturday Chef Shawn, Michelle, and I did the cooking classes for Andong Jjimdak. We filled both classes and we cooked a lot of food. The first one didn't go so smoothly- mainly because we should have prepared a bit more. It didn't really matter though because Shawn was very funny and charming. That evening I went to Tokyo Modern Kitchen in Itaewon with Yunkyeong and Bora. It's down the street from Rocky Mountain Tavern. The place is very cool looking, but service is awful, the music was uber loud (and didn't fit the atmosphere), and the drinks were small (and expensive). I mean we ordered a apple soju cocktail and it came out in a tiny pitcher (300ml) and it cost 15,000 won. Yeah, not worth the money. The Okonamiyaki was delicious and it was accented with wasabi. Sunday was ...

Photoreview: Club MOW at Dosan Park in Apgujeong

So, a friend of a friend recommended this place in Apgujeong and it's in the very stylish Dosan Park area. In this area you'll also find Wooriga (recommended), Gorilla in the Kitchen (it's alright), and it will soon be home to Jung Shik Dang's new restaurant (I can't wait). So, I had very high expectations for this place (uh, oh, foreshadowing...I'm going to write a review on this place later.) The restaurant has very high ceilings and there is an open kitchen. It's very inviting and luxurious. The meal starts out with apple slices coated with a grain and topped with jujube. The dish was crunchy and...forgettable. It didn't seem like they put too much effort into it. The settings and the restaurant is great. The scroll to the left has the menu which is served coursed-style. The bottle has makgeolli. Here is a dodeok salad. This was very good and it had a creamy, herbacious flavor. Next came the salad with raspberry wine dressing (bokbunja). T...

Photoblog: Tapas and Wine at Vin Vino

Located across from Cheil Worldwide is Vin Vino: Wine and Tapas. They have a full cellar with a wide selection of wine. The space is very open with high ceilings. It's the perfect place to meet up with friends and enjoy a nice bottle of wine with some tapas. Here is the cheese plate. Not bad for 12,000. There are a wide selection of tapas. I really liked the cheese plate. The rest...well, not for me, but I'm sure other people would like them. What I really wanted were some nice black olives, maybe a spinach dip with warm bread... The sommeliers are knowledgeable and polite. Here is my friend Andrew with his lamb lollipop. This was a great dish because it comes with mash potatoes and gravy for dipping. Plus, you get to eat it like a lollipop. Vin Vino  02-711-9171

Beer O'Clock Review by Paul Ajosshi

Here is the article that is in this month's Groove Magazine written by Paul Ajosshi. Read his blog at http://ajosshi.blogspot.com/ In the sweltering heat of Seoul’s summer, I had the good fortune of being invited to Beer O’ Clock in Shinchon for a cooling ale and a chance to sample their delicious food. On arrival my friend and I quenched our thirsts with draft Alley Kat beer (5,500 won per glass); this Canadian brew comes with a creamy head and has a honeyed bitterness that is a refreshing change from the usual Korean lagers. Beer O’ Clock is run by Trevor MacDonald, Kim Mi Young and Clark Webster. That night Clark was on hand to recommend the bar’s best dishes. After perusing the menu, we decided on “The Webby” (named after Clark), a burger with “cheeze, jalapenos, onions, mushrooms, lettuce and a dill pickle” for 9,000 won and the “Bacon Cheddar” pizza for 13,000 won. We also ordered five “Hot” wings and five “Greek” wings (only 800 won per wing or 400 won each if you visit...

Loving Hut: Vegan restaurant

Hmmmm...I'm in the mood for something Vegan. I think I should check out this restaurant that my friend Chalica wrote about. Here is her take on it. Vegetarian in Seoul Presents: The Loving Hut by Chalica Pack As a vegetarian living in Korea, I have been pretty lucky thus far finding restaurants that serve non-meat dishes alongside their meat-based staples. . I've only had to walk out of one restaurant (Who knew the Turkish weren't vegetarian friendly?) after finding nothing more than a paltry side salad as my vegetarian option. Last week, I visited my first all-vegetarian restaurant in Korea. The Loving Hut is a (fairly) new vegan chain restaurant that has locations all over the world. At 6pm, the restaurant was already filling up quickly, so it was clear that Loving Hut is no secret to those looking for tasty vegan meals. Click here for the rest.

Sao Paolo: A Brazilian Restaurant in Daehangno, Seoul

If you want them to keep bringing you meat, then leave this sign up. It means give me more. If you turn it around it says, you've killed me with meat. Here is my friend Kat enjoying some grilled meat. Here is the cook cooking off a slice of Picanha. Oh it was soooooo....good. Brazilian Churrascos are the new hot cuisine in Seoul and I recently went to Sao Paolo in Daehangno. It's easy to find out of Hwehwa station exit 1. You cross the street and go down the alley next to the Puma Shop. So what did I think? Pretty awesome. I ate a whole lot of meat. I particularly enjoyed the Picanha: a Rump Cover steak. (It's the cut of meat the man is cutting above.) The meat is richly marbled and the method of cooking makes it very "fluffy." What I mean is that the vertical method of cooking makes the fat melt and it leaves it very rich in flavor. Meals are around 25,000 a person. Be sure to check it out and tell them Seoul Eats sent you! Dan
