November Dining Events in Seoul, Korea

I know I haven't been blogging, but I've been really busy with getting stuff together for hard copy magazines. Here are some of the November dining events. I'll be at some of them too.

November 9-11
Chef Meili welcomes guest chef Fredi Mossler Jr., 3rd year apprentice to Karl and Rudi Obauer of the Restaurant Obauer in Werfen, Austria. The Restaurant Obauer is arguably most prestigious establishment in Austria and has garnered 2 "Michelin Stars," 4 Toques from "Gault Millau," and 5 Stars from "Ala Carte." Fredi will be serving up Austrian delicacies with a modern flair. Some featured dishes will be Veal Carpaccio with Horseradish Foam, Boletto Mushroom Cream Soup with Fillet of Smoked Trout, and Pumpkin Seed Croquette Parfait. Prices range from W26,500 to W34,500. A 3 course set menu set menu will cost W38,000. 797-3820

November 22 through 25
Food Expo Sextet. The Coex Convention will be having six different food related fairs all in one area with over 400 hundred different companies. There will be the Int'l Food Fair, Int'l Kitchen Machinery & Food related Equipment Fair, Int‘l Hotel & Restaurant Fair, Int'l Agriculture, Fisheries & Livestock Food Fair, Rice & Fermented Food Fair and the Kimchi Expo. There will be numerous conferences and seminars, export consultation, a cooking festival, a cooking competition show, and a new product showcase. You will find something to do. Thanksgiving for the rest of us. Ape with Pipe will be celebrating Thanksgiving with a Seafood Paella expertly prepared by Chef Greg de Fraze. The entree will come be served with a personal cheese plate and a wine or beverage of your choice. W25,000. 749-0903

It's filling and hearty like a bowl of spaghetti but with Asian flair. It's one of those dishes that you can get whenever you need a quick meal and it doesn't break the wallet. I can't say I have had any seriously terrible jajangmyeons except maybe some delivery places (where the noodles are overcooked and terribly clumped together so it takes like 10 minutes to get the sauce mixed into it) but even then it is still edible. Calories in Soju and other things I Know about Korea's Famous Swill

Just in case you were wondering, one bottle of Soju contains 540 calories. That's like 4 beers. So to put it in perspective, you would need to walk about two hours to exercise it off. (Walking two hours with a soju hangover is not an easy task.) Soju originally was made from rice but whenever there were rice shortages, people were forbidden to make Soju. Alcohol producers the started to use sweet potatoes and tapioca to make an ethanol based alcohol. Overtime they doctored up the taste so it has a smooth, crisp taste that goes great with raw seafood and grilled meats. The world drinks a lot of Soju. 61.38 Million cases of soju were produced in 2012 with Korea consuming about 2.75 billion bottles of Soju a year. You would think that everyone would be falling over drunk in Korea, but this is not the case. The alcohol is only about 17-19% so a bottle won't wreck you (but two or more might.) Seobu Gamja-guk One of the dishes that came out of necessity is gamja-tang or pork-bone potato stew. This dish has its origins from the Incheon dock area where laborers that were working in the construction wanted to have a cheap and hearty food after a long day of work.
